Troubles updating ATI Graphics card...Follow

#1 Aug 14 2008 at 12:46 PM Rating: Decent
Lately, while playing FFXI I've been noticing some major graphic glitches and 'freakouts' while playing. Half of people's bodies will disappear, big, glitchy blotches will appear and flash in and out, and it's all together kind of annoying.

I figured that my graphics card's drivers are out of date. See, I've been having troubles getting the updater to work. There's some authentication program that ATI runs when you try to update them, and mine never passes. I'm not sure what disqualifies me, but it's really, really annoying.

Anyone know what's going on, or what I should do?

Will support most configurations that fail validation. Also frequently perform better.

Greetings Codyy,

Omega drivers are a last scenario in my book. Sometimes they work well, but they are hacked drivers after all, so you run the risk of producing more problems than they would otherwise fix. Give it a try though, as the worst case is you'll have to move to another set of drivers.

Try a site like this that has it for direct download (check for viruses just in case): http://www.x-drivers.com/catalog/drivers/video_cards/companies/amd/models/mobility_catalyst/8718.html

Regards,
Berek

Oddly they're what ATI officially recommends for laptops that fail validation. They must use a different book.

:)

They do, since my book is well, my book :).

Omega drivers are "hacked" 3rd party drivers. Draw your own conclusions based on that phrase right there.

I "hack" third party code at least once a month. Rarely does it perform less reliably than the OEM version. In fact, if I'm bothering to do it or someone is paying me to, there's probably something wrong with the OEM version.

What with ATI's drivers having a long history of being absolute ****, I'd be inclined to take their advice on what to do when their chipset validation fails. The whole point of the validation is to prevent the drivers from being used with hardware that has known issues. Why you'd want to override that and install the same drivers ATI is essentially explicitly telling you will fail or not function properly escapes me. Because the file has "catalyst" in the name?

I didn't follow your link, but is the package even stripped of the validation check?

Was idly browsing this forum, lookin' for interesting threads when something that catered to my interests popped up. As my former thread here would tell you, I'm currently on a borrowed Acer Laptop. Now, Acer's being a ***** when it comes to drivers, so I decided to try ATI's own manufacture.

Validation failed. Fuck Acer. Seriously. Ah well, Smash provided an alternative. Download. Follow all instructions. Install the relevant Omega Driver. Reboot.

Fuck. Driver is made of fail and bullshit. Rollback failed as well. Actually had to use System Restore, which I sodding hate.

Thanks Smash. Worked smashingly.

Moral of the story? Download/use shit like this only if you know you can reverse it.
