Your computer isn't a Dell, is it? I did some (very) quick googling and this issue looked to be exclusive to Dell machines with old Radeon cards. It wouldn't surprise me though, I heard Dell used to package Vista with bloatware it wasn't even compatible with during the early days...
Edit: Updating video card drivers might helps also... who knows.
Edit 2: Check the warranty with the company you bought the laptop from they might support letting customers install new operating systems (Ubuntu... or XP). Beware though, some companies support this but
not all laptops today have XP drivers! Some people have gotten confirmation, uninstalled Vista, installed XP, then found out that their laptop hardware does not support XP for wireless networking! I'd highly suggest giving Vista at least a month though, I've been on it for eight without complaints and consider it a nice OS.
