System FreezeFollow

#1 Jul 27 2008 at 3:58 AM Rating: Good
I checked around and didn't see anything about this. I have been getting odd freezes here lately. It is happening everytime I am in Firefox browsing around the net. I checked my event viewer in safe mode and there wasn't any clues to what happened. I also ran Hijack This and it came up clean as well. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Firefox version: Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1
Addons: NoScript, AdBlock, FlashBlock

OS: Windows XP SP3
A/V: Windows One Care (going to be switching to AntiVir within the next 3 months)

System:
MSI 690G Mainboard (cant remember model off the top of my head)
AMD 64 X2 4600+ 2mb Cache
2x 1024mb (2048mb) DDR-2 800mhz Corsair XMS2 (I Think) (Confirmed by MSI to work with my system)
SATA Items
1x Phillips 20x DVD Burner w/ Lightscribe
1x Hitachi Deskstar 160gb HD
1x Seagate (can't remember model) 250gb HD

I am also using built-in sound. Provider is RealTek

So far it has only occured while using FF.

Eh its still sort of new... less than a year old.
I haven't tried re-installing FF yet. I am probably going to reformat my system anyways. I tend to collect alot of junk over a long period of time and every once in a blue moon the system needs a good recycling lol.

Format away then. It sounds to me like something in your fire fox is borked.

Sounds like you are being victim of random memory dump/retention issues which is common with some games and browsers.

I haven't heard of this with Firefox however, unless the items you are browsing are over addressing memory such as a flash games.

Hard to say with a sudden freeze, however after format I would keep track of what you are doing so when it does freeze you will know why.

I do know one instance where mine will freeze as well and that is when I am on a website which uses playlist.com embedded playlist player. Reason is does is because it keeps addressing memory even after you close Firefox or move on to another website.

Greetings,

As always, double check to ensure all your drivers are updated. Also, for Firefox specifically, updating DirectX, Java, Flash Player, and ensuring your virus scanner are compatible with the browser, will help to ease stuttering or other problems such as the one you appear to be having.

If this doesn't help let me know. The formatting is always a good idea if you have the drivers to reinstall your components and you backed up important documents, it is just a pain to do and takes time.

Regards,
Berek
