So I will be going off to school soon, and I find myself in need of a new PC (considering the one I have now starts to lag when I have more than three windows open).

I have been checking out various notebooks, and have slowly come to the conclusion that I need help (especially after falling in love with the Falcon Northwest PCs, despite the fact that I cannot afford half of one).

I have a budget somewhere around $1500 max. I COULD go more, but I REALLY don't want to. My hope is that I will be able to play next-gen MMORPGs (such as Earthrise and Warhammer Online) wih low-mid settings with as little lag as possible. However, if I cannot get to that point, I'll deal (maybe I'll start playing WoW again, especially if they introduce a magical hero class).

I have considered just going with a desktop, to get more bang for the buck. But, then I lose the ability to travel with it (for when I go home, to the library or an internet cafe). Would the difference in quality be so large that I should consider going for a desktop?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a good TV-Tuner? This would save me from having to find the cash for an acceptable Television while at it.

One last question, how are the Alienware PCs? I know they used to be great, but I have heard that A. since Dell bought them, the quality has gone down and B. they are just using the name to overcharge for the notebooks.

So, does anyone ahve any recommendations? I would appreciate any tiny bit of help people could offer!

Yes.

I'd recommend you buy a $400 laptop and build a $1000 Desktop, if you're capable of ******** things together.

Speaking of solid laptops.

Anyone know where I can get a decent laptop with XP, that still has true serial ports? My current laptop is used, passed down to me from the chief engineer.

I've been using it for 2 years now, and I have to use a serial PCMCIA card or buy USB converters for my programming and programming softwares. It'd be 100x easier if I just had a true serial port, but those are hard to come by. My IT guy is slower than molasses in winter.

My laptop has also been having some slowdown issues, that I can only contribute to the fact that I've installed about every PLC programming software known to the US on it, as well as HMI software, and other programming softwares for various things.

I've done everything short of a complete format and reinstall, only because our IT guy lost all the driver disks for the laptop, as well as the OS install disk. I think it's time just to start fresh before it's 2am, a machine is down, and I can not use my laptop.

Unfortunatly XP is going to die. Also unfortunatly most laptops dont have your PCMcia slots any more.

Your best bet, truthfully, is to get a vista laptop. I know I said it but here me out.

If you get a laptop that is not the minimum requires to run vista and isnt running Vista Home but Vista Ultimate then its great. I currently run Vista Ultimate on my desktop at home (granted my desktop is a quadcore and is the bet of the best almost) and it runs very well.

If I were you I would look into updating your program software to the latest and greatest and see if it will work with vista.

Though msot people dont want to hear it Vista is here and its going to stay. Everything now a days is coming out Vista compatible and not XP compatible. SO my advice is to upgrade fully.

If you are still wanting an XP laptop it can be done. Your best bet is to just buy a Vista laptop of your choosing and get a copy of XP and install XP on it. Now if you do this you are going to have to search for drivers for a long time as its a pain to do this roll back, but it can be done.

Those are your 2 best options.

Laptops are strictly bang for buck. SO the more money you can chuck at one the better it will be. The better it is the mroe often it will break unfortunatly. Laptops have almost 2x times less shelf life time then PCs due to the fact that the laptop market is expanding faster then the PC market.
So that means your uber laptop will become outdated twice as fast or more then a Desktop.

Alienware buys their computers from acer which buys them from Sager. So why pay more when you can buy your computer from the man him self. Sager laptops are very good. All alienware does is rebadge them and paint them.

Dont know much about the TV-Tuner but I would check newegg.com or clubit.com. The problem I see with getting this and not buying a tv is that you are missing out on a TV that will you will get down the road anyway. I say this because in 2-3 years your laptopw ill have become junked and then you will want a new one and then that means a new tv or another tuner. Save your self the agony of a TV-Tuner and just get a big TV when you can afford it. In the long run you will be more happy.

Unfortunately for me, a lot of my PLC programming softwares are still are not compatible with Vista.

If it was just for my personal use, then I would have no problem biting the bullet and moving to Vista (I'd get used to it eventually). But this is for work. For ease of use, I would like a real serial port (but those seem long gone). PCMIA cards work, but seem to crash the communications at times (very annoying times).

My Siemens rep told me of their Programming laptops come with serial ports, and built in Profibus converters, and all that good stuff, but they cost over 3000 USD.

I didn't know that about Alienware. I bought an Acer in February for writing and some surfing and I love it. It's much better than my Dell, which is more a desktop replacement than a portable laptop.
