I read that a dual or triple core may be preferred for gaming over a quad core. why is this? i'm looking at costco and sams for a better computer and saw an HP media center m8457c PC that has amd phenom x4 9500 quad core (5120mb 640gb 2.20GHz 5gb). Should i look for a triple core instead?
Also, would the nvidia GeForce 8400 HD work or should i go for better?
Also, if i don't custom built one with the better graphics card, will i have performance problems when WotLK comes out?
My game style is that i run WoW, itunes, and have my research sites open - allakhazam and wowwiki and sometimes thottbot too.

It is indeed. The reason being is that most games are not multi-threaded, which means that take little, if any, advantages of more than two cores. Even games like Supreme Commander which were designed for quad-core systems hardly use it. If you are looking at gaming, I do not suggest a quad-core CPU at this time, whatsoever.
A Geforce 8400HD is pretty low, you definitely want to go better than that if you are going to play games like EverQuest II, Age of Conan, or even World of Warcraft (which doesn't require a heavy graphics card). I would say an 8600gt is minimum, with an 8800gt recommended, or higher.
As long as you focus on at least 2GB of main memory, a fast 7200RPM hard drive, a 2GHZ+ dual core CPU, and an 8600+ GPU, any system configuration should be fine.

A tech note on the Phenom's don't buy the ones that end in 00, this cpu has the old "B" Stepping. According to AMD this is a known bug, this "B" stepping may cause the PC to freeze at any given time, you can be doing anything and your PC will lockup. AMD has corrected this bug on their "C" Stepping CPU with the models ending in 50. So avoid the 9500, 9600 series and even the tri-cores ending in 00. The revised ones are the 9550, 9750 and so on.
The whole quadc vs dual vs single thing is really losed on games and the average consumer.
Quad-Cores advantage over the others is that you can in the end do a lot more with it, with processor heavy utilities. (Think photoshop and any kind of 3d rendering software.) Beyond that though there isnt anything that requires that much power in processer.
It is trust msot games dont use quadcores and if they do then its still not enough to even push it, usually.
Dual-Cores are where the market is at right now. Single cores have fallen to the wayside now that Dual-Core is pretty much the standard. You get the added benefits of faster processing for less money then a Quad-Core.
Also there are plenty of programs that will actually use both cores in your Dual-Core. Along with that you can actually achieve higher speeds with a Dual-Core over a Quad (last time I checked).
Tri-Cores seem to be one of those bridge technologies that where nice when they came out but only lasted a small bit because it was a bridge to quad.
