Ok. I have a home network with 3, soon to be 4, XP systems. And I added a Vista laptop.

I installed the proper LLTD updates for the XP systems, and the network view shows all 3 XP systems connected to the switch. Infact, my vista laptop can print on a shared Printer on one of my XP systems, but only because I manually typed out the network path for it.

I cannot seem to access any shared files on any of my XP systems from the Vista machine. And I cannot access the Vista machine's shared files from any of my XP systems. I cannot even browse for shared printers, even though when manually typed in, the vista laptop can print on it.

Each machine seems the other in the network list, I have sharing enabled. The XP systems can all go through each other's shareds no problem. But they cannot access the Vista laptop.

All the google searches just yeild results about:

1. turning file sharing on (Done)
2. installing the LLTD update for XP SP2 (Done)
3. making sure all computers are in the same workgroup (Done, MSHOME)

...

It's just weird that I can't even seem to find a point on the Vista laptop to try and open the XP machine like I can on the XP's "Network Places" folder.

Edit:

For more info. Using WMP11, I had previously set up one of my XP systems to share it's music for my Xbox 360. Using my vista laptop, I can access the shared music through WMP11.

I think I'm just missing something really simple here...

Try typing the network name of one of the shares into a browser address bar to see if you have tcp connectivity.

For instance if you have a computer named "Peanut" and are sharing a folder named "Butter" type: //Peanut/Butter into firefox and see if you can browse the share. If so, this is probably a relatively easily fixable network browsing issue in Vista.

If not, you're boned. (Not really, but it's going to be harder to figure out)

Good luck.

Thanks, that worked.

I can access the XP machines by typing the path name. But, I cannot access the Vista laptop from the XP machines. I think it has something to do with the share permissions of the vista machines, but I cannot seem to add any of the network users to the allowed list.

I go to "Sharing" under the folder properties.
"Advanced Sharing"
Then click on Permissions.
Click on Add.

The only thing that shows up under locations is the Laptop itself. And that field cannot be manaully entered.

While I don't recommend doing this full time, try adding the "Everyone" group to a particular share, and see if you can access it then.

The "Everyone" group was already there by default. I'll double check on that though, when I get home today.

I couldn't replicate your issue. I'd give this a shot:

Ok, I feel kinda stupid now.

Norton Security had each of the PCs on the network set to default. Added their IPs to the trusted and my XP machines can now access shared files on the Vista.

Of course, Vista still doesn't see them properly in the basic network view, and I have to type out the path in a browser in order to get files.

Edit:

A few minutes after moving all the IPs to trusted, I went back into the network locations, and all the Xp machines appeared, perfectly accessible.

So my problem was a software firewall, not network settings and permissions.
