Nvidia 8800 GTX (Need help please)Follow

Hello, I just purchased a Dell XPS 720 gaming computer with the following specs:

2.66 GHZ Quad-core CPU
2 Nvidia 8800 GTX graphic cards running in SLI
4GB Corsair dominator ram
500 GB HDD
22" Widescreen
** I also downloaded the latest forceware for my cards at Nvidia site**

My trouble is, I am experiencing 'stutters' every now and then when I am running my characters around (EQ2, LOTRO). I have tried adjusting settings, but with the specs on this computer, I expected it would be able to easily handle max settings in Everquest 2 and Lord of the Rings Online!?

In Lord of the Rings, I normally run around close to 100 fps at Ultra high settings, however, the game 'stutters' when running around, which drops my fps temporarily (second or two), then it jumps right back up in fps. The same happens in Everquest 2, at Extreme, very high, and high graphic settings...

I have no idea what may be the problem, however, I expected alot better performance out of this machine. If anyone could please help me out in anyway I would greatly appreciate it!

Does it happen when specific things pop into view or just randomly?

Check what else your PC may be running in the background while you're playing. If it's trying to do virus/spyware scans, defrag, or other system maintenance, that may cause the 'stutter' effect since the HDD is busy processing more tasks besides the files for your game. If you find any of this running, try finding out where you can change its schedule so it won't run during your playtimes (I run all of my maintenance at 4am local time, since I'm virtually guaranteed to not be awake by that point).

You can also try a generic spyware cleanup and defrag anyway if you haven't recently, since that sort of maintenance can only improve your performance further.

Heat.

Try this, and no, I'm not joking.

Take the case off and retest the same situation while a normal window fan or AC blows directly on the case. If it fixes it, your problem is the boys at dell jammed two super hot running graphics card next to one another without sufficient cooling.

Vsync. Try it.

This might not be it but my roommate has it on and he showed me the game without this setting ans things seemed to stutter.

Sadly but ture, this card has a lot of problems in SLI. Try this to see if it may help, disable SLI mode. I know you've paid a lot of money for these cards and you won't want to run your games with the performance halved, but if it's more stable then stick with it. You may also try to lower your settings just a tad. Don't go out and buy the 9600 GX2 this card has alot of issues too.

It seems like heat to me or a driver probably.

Like mentioned above either get a hosue fna and blow it into your computer and watch the performance.

Also you might try downgrading drivers for your card and see if that helps.

I basically have the same set up except I have a fan in an expansion slot and ran TF2, WoW and FFXI wide open(never checked fps).
As other ppl said I would try more air/checking temp (pc alert I think is what I used). Also reinstall drivers(or get basic dl, only what u know u need) and oddly enough: make sure BOTH cards are working, my friend had this problem he was only running 1 card and it took a few days to notice.(Told ya it was odd lol).
A longshot but I would check power/voltage I'm sure that could make a card get flakey or just useless(happened to me on an old ATI card, 9700 pro I think).
Hope u get it worked out if so pls post I may be looking for answers myself on this someday

PS: posting from KY as well
