Strange Lag - FFXI - VistaFollow

#1 Mar 25 2007 at 5:05 AM Rating: Decent
Hello Alla Users,

(This is not about the PoL installation problem, I've got around that)
I have been using Vista since about February and have only come across one real problem, which is with FFXI. I've searched many forums over the last few weeks and found noone who has the same problem.

The issue is when I start up FFXI everything has a strange lag on it, the intro video, the menus, any sort of movement, even the swirling like effect inside the cursor.(Also noticed in PoL viewer the news bar before the FFXI play button does the same)
The lag is like a staggering consistently every 2 seconds, the game's sound is unaffected and plays like normal but all visuals lag. My FPS is unaffected and my broadband connection is stable.

This continues until I logoff FFXI. It makes normal play like partying impossible.
I've tried turning all of FFXI settings to the minimum and the maximum and the lag is as if nothings changed.

All my other games(older and newer) and applications have not such a complaint, in fact since upgrading from XP my PC seems to run smoother.

My PC is:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU
ASUS A8N-SLi Premium motherboard
nVidia GeForce 6800XT (x2 SLi)
3GB RAM PC3200
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 4
Windows Vista Ultimate x64

All my drivers are up-to-date from what their manufacturers have released for Vista x64.

Sorry if this seems a little long but I thought it be best to put as much detail as I could.

Thank you for any assistance.

Im having the same problem as you my friend and im still working on fixing it just built my PC a couple days ago and im running Vista Home Premium. Have a consistent lag every 2 or so seconds only in the game has nothing to do with the playonline viewer.

My PC is:
AMD Opteron 64 185 Duel-Core
BIOSTAR TForce4 SLI motherboard
nVidia GeForce 7600GS PCI-E
1GB PC3200 RAM
Just running on nForce4 integrated sound for the moment

Have all updated drivers from manufacturers as you do.

Havent tried another game yet in the process of installing another at the moment.

Plz if anyone has an idea as to what might be causeing the lag plz post.

Have the same problem too.

When I fire up XP, FFXI plays normally.
On Vista I get this graphics lag which is making it tough to play on it.

This is happening to a lot of people so don't feel like your the only one. Square is really dragging their asses getting support to work right I mean they still have major glitching with the Nvidia 8800 cards.

If they handle this issue like they did the Nvidia one they will just blame it on Microsoft for not adding support for their game.

I'm briefly ending a self imposed exile to say this: Koji, you've obviously never even used linux, and are probably just saying that in a pathetic attempt to make yourself seem superior to Windows users. People will use Windows over Linux because they actually want their devices, to you know, work, and not ***** around for weeks on distro forums looking for GPL'ed drivers. Oh, and at least Windows users can play games on their os. The only thing Linux has gaming wise is the same crappy ports done by id 5 years ago.

(And before you start the "You're an MS fanboy spreading FUD" crap, I've used a Gentoo system for the past year, and in fact am using that machine to post this message. Go troll Linspire forums)

The fact you say anything about not playing games on a linux box means you really haven't tried you can most new games on a linux box which I'm not gonna asume you don't know and to awnser his actual question why would you use Vista over XP ***** linux is bears nothing on the situation the truth is Vista is a hell of alot better then XP on so many levels. Stop believing everything you read and actually try it out learn some stuff and you will understand that Vista has far more to provide for the end user then XP ever can.

I have a similar occurrence on my Vista system, although to a much lesser effect. I get a stutter (about one to two seconds) in the game play, but it only happens every 3 to 4 minutes, so the game is playable. On my 2004 dell laptop, with windows xp, there is no stutter. This stutter can get annoying in parties (like when inputing commands, and it stutters) and in CG sequences (sometimes a few seconds are skipped/jumped through). This is really annoying.

Hi, I'm a returning player to FFXI, I quit around a year and a half ago. I decided to come back (something which I never thought I'd do) lol. Anyways... I decided if I'm gonna come back, I was gonna make sure that I wouldn't be playing on a 4 year old HP computer with dial up again. I got 2MB internet, spent way over a thousand pounds on a new Dell computer, made sure it had 8 times the Ram of my old one, 5 times the hard drive space, a better graphics card, and well yea you get the idea. *Goes to install FFXI* Cannot install... -.- (Vista) Had gone through too much to just give up so spent two full days trying everything to get it to work. Finally managed to make it install. And yes, I have the same lag you do. I don't have any lag in POL or in the inro. Only in game play. I have to filter out almost all chats just to make it playable. Every 5 seconds it stops and sort of jolts. God help me when I'm higher level and wanna do a Dynamis or maybe decide to level NIN >.< But yea, I hope they figure something out for it. My younger brother is playing too using the old computer I used to play on and is having no lag :/ I'm not a tech wizard by any standard but I know that Vista is responsible for it. I even remember reading somewhere... (SquareEnix): "We advise gamers to not run FFXI on Vista, atleast not for now". Grrrr... Oh well, anyone find a solution please post ^.^ Christ... imagine if I was a BRD... :O

Have you guys tried disabling Aero?

I run it just fine on my Vista Home Premium laptop, which doesn't have spectacular specs and still runs the game just fine.

Yeah, I have it setup so Aero disables when I boot PoL but get the same problems.

As for now I'm using a Dual-Boot for XP/Vista, using XP solely for FFXI atm. My computer seems to like Vista more than it did XP, so I tend to use Vista more. It be nice to have FFXI on the Vista side but I guess I'll live with it until some other solution turns up.

Thanks for your help.

I'm aware this is a very old post, but still, it comes up in google when searching for this kind of issue so I'd like to post a solution here, if you have weird lag, like it skipping constantly like a CD would, and you're using vista, go to Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Network Connections -> Right click the connection -> Properties -> Uncheck 'QoS Packet Scheduler'

I hope this helps at least 1 person :)
