Search and DestroyFollow

#1 Dec 18 2006 at 6:15 AM Rating: Decent

If this is the wronge forum for this thread, I am sorry. This does however have to do with me playing FFXI and WoW.

I use Search and Destroy on my PC, and have for sometime. But recently I have been running the scanner once to twice a day. Because the same few problems are being detected. I'll name them if it matters.

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisabler

Starware

My question is, are these two problems something I should be very concerned about? I can't seem to get rid of them. Also sometimes when I try to run a Norton antivirus scan, the front page to the program doesn't load up fully. Making it unusable.

I also want to try and figure out where these things may have come from. I don't open e-mail from places I didn't ask for, and I don't go to many sites. Wanted to ask here before I pay a tech. $80.00 to clean out my system! Also to better protect myself in the future.

Starware definatly is a problem. It's a pain to get rid of.. at least last time I dealt with it.

The other one, try googling.

The newest development, is that my PC crashes everytime I try to uninstall Firefox. Everything is really slow, even when off-line. Not sure if a possible infection is the worst problem, or the techs at Symantic live, that try to sell me something everytime I ask for help.

I need a place to find out if my PC is infected with something, and not have to pay nearly $100.00.

Is the program called Spybot Search and Destroy? If so, that program does catch Windows processes and reports them back to you. Like the other guy said, Google the results if you're not sure about what comes up.

Might also want to try Adaware. Set it to deep scan the hard drive and run it in safe mode. Safe mode doesn't have all the Windows processes running that spyware normally attatches itself to; so it makes it easier for the program to clean.

If you haven't done so yet, clean your temp files and defragment your hard drive after cleaning spyware. If you have alot, it'll really fragment that drive and slow things down.

I used to make a living cleaning spyware and viruses, lol. There are alot of things to try.

Yes, one of the programs I run is called, Spybot Search and Destroy. But I don't know how to use "Safe Mode."

I also use Spysweeper, Bitdefender Rootkit Uncover, and Norton Security 2006.

Sorry for the late reply. The Holidays are here.

Ignore the Microsoft Firewall Disable thing. The Starware like Kelvy said is a problem.

The Firewall is stating that you disabled or someone disabled the firewall from the control panel. You can just ignore it as Spybot also does this if you disabled Auto Updates and Virus Check.

Thanks for the tips. Still having a few annoying problems. Other then being paranoid. The worst is, while playing WoW. All of a sudden my mouse cursor turns from the WoW pointer, to a moving windows arrow. The blank white arrow. I hear a odd "Ding" sound. Like when trying to do something with Windows, but not being allowed. Then I can't use my mouse for anything for a few seconds and my char. in WoW freezes or keeps running. Also when this happens there is a odd tiny white dot in the middle of the page. Kinda looks like the tip of the mouse cursor broke off and stuck to the window.

I run S & D often now. For the past few days the starware hasen't showed up. Now it finds Webtrends Live. I am wondering if I have some sort of worm or virus. Downloading spyware or adware to my system. Slowing my processes down. The "System Idle Process" seems to be the most active.

Yes, it is USB. It is the Logitech Trackman Wheel.

Also, after another few system crashes. I took my tower in for a tune up. So to speak. Just brought and connected my system back up today. The mouse problem only happened while playing WoW. I haven't been able to log in to WoW yet. Also the mouse has been replaced.

The original mouse was dropped in standing water or bite the cheese. But the new one is the same model and brand. Just haven't tested it in-game yet.

On a side note, is it safe to surf the web with only Norton internet security, S & D, and Webroot Spy sweeper?

My sig might help provide more things to try.
Since you have been cleaning your system, continuously, I would suggest turning off System Restore, and then do a full virus/spyware scan, and restart. The problem being that some things store themselves in system restore, and even though you removed them, it comes back when the computer reboots.
