Buying a laptop... What should I do? (was forum=28)Follow

#1 Nov 06 2006 at 8:37 PM Rating: Decent
All right, well, I've never looked into laptops before, but I'm definitely going to buy one. So, here are the main three that I went out and did the customize thing, and are in my price range: HP Pavillion, Compaq Pressario, or Alienware area-51 thing. I can post what I customized them too if needed, but really, which one is my best bet to go with for a good balanced notebook?

Um, you would need to post the specs to get a decent answer.

I would go for Alienware or Dell.

I'm currently running on a Compaq Presario that I've been using for the last five years (no other computers). Never really had a serious problem with it, everything runs smoothly. The next generation of games will make it look like a dinosaur, but I'm guessing I still have a year or two on this thing before I'll need to upgrade.

Depends. How many people do you plan on blowing to raise the cash? Price is always an issue you know. After raising the coin, just remember not to sit on it, no matter how good it looks.

Ask your self what you wanna do with your laptop.

Gameing (hardcore) - $1200+ is a good rule of thumb on those. These are mostly for people who game hardcore and dont own a desktop. These are also good because they wont go out of date as fast as a cheaper laptop.

Gameing (normal) - $800-$1200 is an average price of a moderate gaming laptop. This will perform ok on most games and do all graphic things with ease still. This is probably your best bet for something in the All-N-Wonder Laptop.

Average laptop (walmart woot) $400-800 is the price of the laptops at walmart. These babies are crap pretty much. They are the low end of the current wave of hardware trends. Only goof for surfing the intrawebz and watching movies.

All these prices are general. There are exceptions to all this.

As for brand wise:

Dell: Dell is pretty good. They can make some decent stuff but they have their bad points. Customer service kinda sucks at times and most of their laptops are notorious for sucky abttery life and batteries/hard drives falling out. Also the fans on the laptops dont last very long.

Gateway: Not so sure on the laptop department. I have a few friends with them and they enjoy them ok. not as good as dell but none of the falling out peices. Customer service from my point of view is better then dells.

Compaq /HP: Just say no. These are the crap shoot of computers. These thigns suck. Doesnt matter how much money you shove in them HP/Compaq blows hard.

Alienware: Havent owned one but I have seen them in action and dealt with customer service. In general they are the better of Gateway and Compaw/HP. They rank up their with Dell.

My advise to you is to not get a laptop. You can spend way less money or the same on a desktop and get way more power.

Don't go with Alienware, trust me I made that same mistake, do some research on them and see how they look. I would go with widowpc, do a google and check them out.

Thanks for the decent replies. So... HP/Compaq a definite no? Hmm.. I was actually planning on going for the Compaq too... And no on Alienware? Crap. All right, I'll check out widowpc, see how it goes price wise. (I really don't want to go over 1600 dollars... But, there may be an exception I guess. 1000-1200 is like, perfect.)

Dell and Alienware are your best laptop bets at the moment. IT would be helpful to know approximate maximum budget, and the answers to the following:

What games will you be playing on it?
How long do you forsee yourself owning this laptop before upgradeing?
Will you be taking it with you often?

In your priceing, keep in mind that Ram and hard drives are cheap and easy to upgrade. Processor, screen size, and video card are not. If going with a smaller capacity hard drive gets you the funds for a bigger screen, get the smaller hard drive.
