Log in problem.Follow

I recently moved into my college dorm room and attempted to log in after reinstalling everything onto my computer (parents uninstalled it). Everything when great, I got into PlayOnline and got to FFXI agreement of terms page.

I saw my two characters, but when I tried to log either one of my characters in the ...Downloading... icon in the bottom right hand corner continued flashing through the dots until it got Timed Out.

I received the error message "FFXI - 3001 No response from the server". Any idea on how to overcome this error?

I know my computer meets/exceeds the minimum requirements because I played it on this computer before I left for college. The only new hardware is the internet connection, which is a hardline Ethernet connect in my dorm room. Is there any reason to believe that my internet connection could be the problem? Has someone had a similar problem that they were able to solve?

Thanks in advance for all helpful responses.

Hi Beden, I had a problem when I first moved into college too. It was somewhat different than yours though, the wireless network my college uses completely restricts the ports needed to log onto PlayOnline so in your situation you're able to make it further than I was.

However that doesn't mean it still couldn't be a port problem as FFXI uses a wide range of port numbers, perhaps the one needed to connect to FFXI from PlayOnline is blocked by your school for one reason or another. My suggestion to you is to connect to FFXI through a proxy server which will allow you to tunnel around any closed ports by your colleges network.

Here is a quote I wrote up in another thread, hope it helps you too. And good luck :)

Quote:
I found this neat program called http-tunnel (http-tunnel.com), which allows you to do just that. They also list FFXI as one of their supported games and provide documentation on how to set it up to work with FFXI in a step-by-step guide. The low-bandwidth client version is free and in my experience I never had many problems using this version in terms of lag when I did have it, the high bandwidth version does have a monthly subscription fee. To connect to FFXI it also requires an additional program called Proxycap which does cost money but comes with a 30 day free trial, it explains how to set that up in the documentation as well.

Hey thanks for that website, I downloaded that program and I am currently trying to set it up, but during set up it is asking me for my Proxy...any idea how I could figure that out? Should I get the tech squad at my college to do it for me or will they get mad at me for bypassing the blocked ports?

I am by no means a techical whiz so I really appreciate the help.

This thread is a very complete and easy to understand guide that walks you through step-by-step the things you need to do to get FFXI up and running.
