FFXI ports (was forum=10)Follow

#1 Sep 10 2006 at 12:45 AM Rating: Decent
I'm on a college campus and the 15k ports that ffxi "could" use is kinda much for the information service guys here. Anyone know if there are specific ports for certain servers and/or locations. If not, is there a certain port that ffxi almost always uses? As in I could connect say 70% of the time with a certain low range of ports?

Server: Valefor
Location: North Carolina

Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group.
TCP 25.80.110.443 or 50000 - 65535
UDP 50000 - 65535

Port numbers that may be used by terminals such as the PlayStation(R)2.
TCP 1024 - 65535
UDP 50000 - 65535

Yes, I have found this information as well.

What exactly does the TCP 25.80.110.443 mean? I know about the 50k-65535. Do I have to have all these ports open or can I open a few ports and ffxi still connect most of the time?

It seems kind of strange that ffxi would require over 15,000 ports to be open and WoW only needs 1.

FFXI just uses different ports for different things, not a Networking expert, but would assume, ffxi would allow multitasking with ports to help keep the lag down. Its an older game so might of been more difficult to use just one port, but I have no idea.

It's not THAT old when compared to some massive online games that require fewer (everquest)

But does anyone know what the TCP address that looks kinda like a ping address means?

Hi Rije, I had the same problem as you. I arrived at college and found I wasn't able to connect to my favorite game, FFXI. I also contacted the technical support department at my college and they proved to be of no help at all for me. The solution I found to deal with the problem was to tunnel around the restrictions placed on me by my colleges wireless network. While it doesn't answer your original question you asked, it may be an alternative you could consider.

I found this neat program called http-tunnel (http-tunnel.com), which allows you to do just that. They also list FFXI as one of their supported games and provide documentation on how to set it up to work with FFXI in a step-by-step guide. The low-bandwidth client version is free and in my experience I never had many problems using this version in terms of lag when I did have it, the high bandwidth version does have a monthly subscription fee. To connect to FFXI it also requires an additional program called Proxycap which does cost money but comes with a 30 day free trial, it explains how to set that up in the documentation as well.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck in getting back on FFXI. :)

I believe those are individual port numbers. 25, 80, 110, 443

I'm not 100% sure but I seem to remember reading that FFXI rotates port useage throughout the listed ranges as a means to prevent/limit cheating/hacking.

Kyssandra... thanks a lot!... that program does work

Quick question though...

Do you know how fast the speed is under the free proxy. Just curious because the updating seems to be taking a little long.

But if its like 56k or even better than that, then your a life-saver

And Alrefie... If you RTFP then maybe you'll understand that we know the port numbers, that knowing the port numbers aren't the problem.

You're welcome, glad it worked out. :)

I don't know how fast the speed is Rije but when I did use the free version, during peak hours I did notice playonline would run very slow sometimes. I never tried updating the game through the proxy (did that at home before I left) but once I logged onto the game I never got any lag from it.

Ok... maybe you can answer this question

It connects to PoL, goes all the way to character selection, then, just before it comes up in the world, the downloading data gets like stuck and it times out

Any idea on that?

Just turn on Upnp in both your router and the FFXI network config. (I should sig that)

Opening individual ports is a bit of a time waster when you can do the whole lot in a couple of clicks and never worry about it again.

The only thing I can think of Rije is it being due to the low bandwidth free version. When I used it I mentioned above that POL ran extremely slow when I used it, I can imagine the update would be just as bad. You might want to consider paying for at least 1 month of the high bandwidth version.
