FFXI Ports-Protocols-Firewall config help (was forum=10)Follow

#1 Sep 09 2006 at 11:12 AM Rating: Decent
Hello!

I want to play FFXI at work on my laptop.

Thing is, the Internet is blocked at work by a proxy and/or firewall, not sure which.

I can ask my boss to unlock specific sites I want to visit.

What I want to know is what protocols/ports/adresses etc... I need to get unlocked in order to use FFXI.

Can someone knowledgeable about those issues enlighten me?

Very much appreciated.

That IP is not the only one that needs to be unblocked. I can't remember the others off the top of my head. If you're running windower, you can find them on a functioning connection using the DOS command "netstat -a". This will list active connections on your system. I recommend doing that from home or somewhere that FFXI works correctly, and noting the IP's. Also, I think different areas use different servers so keep that in mind too if you continue to have trouble in certain zones. I think there's a server for FFXI classic, a server for RoZ, a server for CoP, and a server for ToAU zones. So 4 IP's total need to be unblocked. Might be wrong about that.

My firewall is a real pain to set up, so I can confirm this.

It's been a while since I had to reconfigure things, but I believe there's a different IP for each city zone, and at least one ip for each region. Might not be quite that many, but it is *definately* more than 4 for a world - I would not remember having to manually add so many firewall rules otherwise.

Might be worth a try contacting SE's technical support to see if they can tell you which IP addresses are are needed.

I made this in another thread, but I think the program will help you out too so I'll quote it here:

Quote:
I found this neat program called http-tunnel (http-tunnel.com), which allows you to do just that. They also list FFXI as one of their supported games and provide documentation on how to set it up to work with FFXI in a step-by-step guide. The low-bandwidth client version is free and in my experience I never had many problems using this version in terms of lag when I did have it, the high bandwidth version does have a monthly subscription fee. To connect to FFXI it also requires an additional program called Proxycap which does cost money but comes with a 30 day free trial, it explains how to set that up in the documentation as well.

Good luck.
