I'm playing FFXI on a Presario X1000 with a 1280x800 monitor. I changed the Overlay Graphics Resolution to 1280x800, the windows (equipment, text etc.) look fine but the characters look distorted. Anyone knoes how to fix it?

The resolution isn't a 1.33:1 (4x3) aspect ratio at 1280 x 800., which is the standard aspect ratio. You have a 1.6:1 aspect ratio. About your only choice is to change the resolution that your screen runs at to something closer to the 1.33:1 standard.
Yup, that's your issue right there.
