I am upgrading from the dial up. Which is preferable, cable or DSL? Which is faster? Are they both "on" all the time?

Thanks

Both are "on" all the time.

Both are capable of high speeds, so the bandwidth you get is dependant on what your ISP limits you to.

DSL is nice because you can use your existing phone line, thus making installation easier.

Cable is nice if you want a package deal with internet+cable TV on the same line.

Someone will probably come on here and say "dsl sucks" or "cable sucks," but from my experience, they're pretty damn similar.

The deciding factor will probably be the price and the reputation of your ISP.

They are indeed similar. I've had both, but I like DSL better. Cable connections are typically shared throughout a neighbourhood. That means that at 4PM, when all the kids come home from school and are downloading things, my speed slowed right down. Same thing goes for late nights on Friday and Saturday.

DSL on the other hand has been a consistent speed for me ever since I had it installed 2 years ago.

If you live in a condo or some sort of apartment building, I would definitely reccommend DSL over cable. If you're just in a house and getting cable would give you a price break or something like that, then you can probably go that route.

(If you're in Canada, don't sign up with Rogers)

I have Earthlink dial up right now, and I do have service at the house. They are about equal, but cable is a little more $. Frankly, I have been pretty happy with Earthlink. The only LD issues I have had are recent troubles in PoK. I see people go LD all the time and *knock wood* even on a dial up I have been pretty consistent. I'll just look for the better deal.

Thanks for the input

I tend to prefer cable myself, because DSL can be finicky in houses and areas with older phone wireing, but they are both good services. You can check out reviews of service in your area for cable and DSL here at:
