"Administrator Errors" while starting PlayOnlineFollow

#1 May 07 2004 at 8:58 AM Rating: Decent
Hey everyone.

I've been playing on the PC for a while, but decided to switch it up a bit and play PS2 for the time being. Until my PS2 started with the errors last week (One of the old versions),and I'm trying to reinstall the PC version.

Well, I'm having weird errors when I try to reinstall this on my PC. It's telling me

"Cannot start PlayOnline. Please make sure you are logged in as an administrator with all rights enabled."

or something like that. I check, I am the computer administrator and everything. What's up? Playonline won't even load at all.

Thanks fellas!

And through reading the stickies:

Processor type/speed: 2.8 P3
Total Hard drive space/Free hard drive space: 20/10
Amount of Ram: 512
Video card type: ATI Radeon
Operating system: Windows XP
Frequincy of problem: Happens everytime I try to start PlayOnline

It's possible that you installed POL as another user, though unlikely. If you're the Computer administrator (Windows default user of Administrator) then you have access to everything on the system.

I would check to make sure that the POL files aren't set to Read Only status. Right click POL.exe and Select Properties from the context meun that appears. Make sure Read Only isn't checked at the bottom of the properties box.

Please post back if that wasn't the problem.

Are you performing a fresh install, or are you using a backup?

Fresh install as in the first time?

Yes.

I bought the PC version and the ps2 version. So this is the first time I'm trying to install this on my computer.

This is a bit boggling. I have this faint tickle on my brain that I've encountered a similar problem before, but I can't seem to recall what was causing it.

Logically, if you are logged in as the Windows Default Administrator, or any user that you assigned Administrator privileges to, you should be able to access anything on the computer that hasn't been encrypted by another user. And even that can be gotten around.

At the moment, that's all I can think of. I'll post back if I think of anything else. Other than that all I can do is invite some of the other users around here to help out =/

Sorry I couldn't help :(

Hehe, it's ok bud. I'm making do and just installing FFXI on my other computer and moving my graphics card (this one has an Intel, bleh). So I'll just play here for a while, let me know if anyone comes up with a solution. Thanks for your help! =)

Taken from: https://secure.playonline.com/supportus/index.html

Found it while searching for information on my account. Hope that clears it up for you.

Q: I get a message saying "Please verify administrator's authorization" and cannot run PlayOnline for Windows.

A: If your PC is running Windows 2000 or XP and you get a message asking whether you have administrator level authorization, please check if you have logged into the OS as an administrator. There may be cases when overwriting registry data is not allowed even if your account belongs to the administrator group. If that is the case, you have to edit your registry. To edit your registry, please take the following steps.

For Windows XP:
1. Log into the OS with the current account and select "Run with the specified file" from the Start menu.
2. Type "regedit" and select "OK."
3. A window called "Registry editor" opens. Activate "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" by clicking on [+].
4. Click on the [+] located at left of "SOFTWARE."
5. Select "PlayOnline" and choose "Access Authorization" from the Edit menu.
6. A Window called "Access Authorization to PlayOnline" opens. Select your account in "Group name or User name" and check "Authorize" for full control and then select "OK."
7. Restart your PC and try to run PlayOnline.

For Windows 2000:
1. Log into the OS with the current account and select "Run with the specified file" from Start menu.
2. Type "regedit32" and select "OK."
3. A window called "Registry editor" opens. Activate "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" by double-clicking it.
4. Double-click the "SOFTWARE" folder and select "PlayOnline."
5. From the security menu, select "Access Authorization."
6. A Window called "Access Authorization to PlayOnline" opens. Select your account in "Group name or User name" and check "Authorize" for full control and then select "OK."
7. Restart your PC and try to run PlayOnline.

Well, if you're using Windows 2000, the problem is that you should be using regedt32 (no, there's no 'i') and clicking the Security tab at the top while the PlayOnlineUS folder is selected.

If you're on WinXP, then regrettably, I can't help any more than I have. Other than to say that regedt32 is also a WinXP tool, and you might have more luck trying that, rather than the 16-bit regedit.

If that doesn't work, try posting back with error messages, system info, etc.
