Hi, Jim Nesselroad here.
I have an old Dell Dimension 8100, 1.4mb processor, 1meg ram, with an old NVIDIA GE proforce2 card. We play Everquest, and had upgraded the drivers and installed a bunch of Nvidia stuff to keep playing EQ as long as possible. Well, ran out of gas with the DirectX 9.0b.

I bought a ATI 9200 card that would fit in the same slot, and installed it after alot of monkey business with the NVIDIA drivers and the new ATI ones. The computer hung twice during this, and I screwed it up. Finally got the ATI 9200 installed without its TV adaptor and Hydravision (don't use 2 screens or TV so didn't need that cluttering my already taxed system).

Now EQ says no 3d devices found.
I have re-installed DirectX 9.0b and run dxdiag to be sure its all enabled. I have tried to deleat all the Nvidia but there is still Nvidia stuff in the control panel, but no Nvidia stuff in the add/delete programs. Clicking the Nvidia nview desktop manager in the control panel appears to do nothing.

Also had a wierd thing occur as well and maybe related: When I click on file folders in the windows a popurp appears that asks to choose which program to open them? I have to use the explore feature to move through/into embedded folders. What caused that?

Anyway, I know I have old Nvidia stuff hanging around but can't get rid of it. Found the detonator RIP and detonator destroyer but they don't recognize a string and therefore don't delete anything.

Do i have to re-install my Nvidia card, then try delete it out again? (pain in the ***, but will if it looks necessary)

Any ideas and thanks.

Jim.

Hello in Galesburg.

I recently had a similar problem, also with a Radeon 9200. Direct3D mysteriously disappeared.

What fixed it for me was:

1. Uninstalled Graphics Card, removed everything

2. Reinstalled DirectX

3. Reinstalled Graphics Card, updated drivers.

I had done it in a different order before but it didnt work until I tried this order *shrug*.

Anyway, don't know if this will help you, but it can't hurt.

Hi, Jim Nesselroad here.
Still having the trouble.
Here's what I have done:

1) Went through each start-up line of the start rountine to get rid of the excess Dell, Hewlett-packard and nonsense stuff that appeared unecessary. System resources are up to 80%, but the 3d object is still missing to EQ.

2) Reviewing files I notice I have lost the ability to open folders when I am reviewing folder contents. Windows now asks for a program to open the folder. I can use the explore feature and still review, but when I try use the windows like a web browser, I cannot. What did I ***** up there?

3) Deleted all the ATI stuff. And rebooted to standard VGA adapters.

4) Installed the latest Nvidia drivers. (received message that I was overwriting newer version of same file every time). I guess that is proof that these weren't removed from windows.

5) Put the old GE card back into the computer and finished installation. Everything appeared fine. BUT I didn't run EQ to prove it.

6) Used detonator R.I.P. to delete all the Nvidia stuff. BUT I get an error stating: Windows Path error. Ah-ha, This may be a way to fix the whole works.

7) I did (ahem) click darn near everything in the scanreg to delete everything that had Nvidia. Did I ***** soemthing up there too? I bet I did.

8) I am at the point where I can finish deleting the Nvidia, install the ATI software, install the ATI card, complete the software installation, install Direct X a 4th time and see if it all will work.

9) Any new ideas?

Thanks Jim.

Hi, Jim Nesselroad here.
Another dumb thing has occurred!
I get an error when I try to download e-mail:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
It appears I have caused my e-mail downloader (outlook express to malfunction by deleting something that was necessary for it.)
Any additional ideas?

Hi, Jim Nesselroad here.
Hmmm, maybe I just created the best time to transfer the files to another computer and upgrade windows me to windows XP?

Installing XP certanly couldn't hurt. It is much faster and much more stable than Win ME, and at this point, it sounds like you ahve reached the point where system stability is compromised. We might be able to repair it, but it probably wouldn't be worth the effort in the long run if you are thinking about upgrading anyways.
