Still freezing.Follow

#1 Apr 09 2004 at 3:36 PM Rating: Decent
It's been about 2 months now, and EQ is still freezing. I quit playing for a while, but I want to play again.
I bought a new sound card, a SoundBlaster 16pci (cheapest they make, on a low budget).
Only played EQ once with it, and it froze after 15 minutes of play.
I'm not sure what's going on, I thought it was my soundcard (Onboard Audiotek AC 97), but if it still freezes then... Blah...
Tell me what / how to post what I need to post, and I will. I want this fixed.

I should probably note that my whole computer freezes up, and it only does so in certain zones.
For example, my Dwarf never freezes in ButcherBlock Mts. but if I enter Kaladim, it'll freeze up after a few minutes of walking around, making it hard to get to my trainer.
Qeynos doesn't freeze up at all, until I enter South Qeynos, where my Warrior's guild is.
I'm mad because I put the new sound card in, and it didn't do anything... I think it may be overheating, or even overclocking of my CPU... Possibly bad RAM?
My video card doesn't get too hot while I play Warcraft 3, Counter-Strike, or any other 3D game, but when I play EQ, it starts getting REALLY REALLY hot. I'm going to have a friend come over, who has a GeForce 5900 AGP, and we'll put that in and see if anything changes.

Please help though, I really like EQ, and don't want to change to anything else...

Sorry about the delay there. must have missed this one somehow.

Alright, a couple possibilities here. First, can you post your complete computer specs as outlined in the posting faq above please? That will halp troubleshoot the issue

The msot common cause of the lockup issue is an IRQ conflict. Wiondows allows computers to have devices share an IRQ. under normal circumstances that is a perfectly normal, valid arrangement. Unfortunatly everquest does not like that setup at all. Check and see if your sound, video, and or network card are sharing an IRQ under start:settings:control panel:system and then the device mangler tab for each device, click on properties.

If they are on teh same IRQ, let me know and i'll post change instructions.

The next possibility is your onboard sound may be conflicting with your new sound card. go into your computers BIOS (usually by pressing F1 or Del after startup) and find the onboard sound toggle. if it is on, disable it.

The third possibility is an outdated video card. I can tell you if yours is ok or not after you post what it is. there are things we can do to make it easier on your computer even if the card is below spec.

The fourth possibility could be low system RAM. if you are below 512MB, background programs could be using up too much ram. that can be fixed by disableing some startup programs that you don't need.

The last possibility that comes immidiatly to mind is a virus. run housecall.trendmicro.com and see if it picks up anything.

Hope that helps!

I know I disabled the onboard sound in BIOS, but I had the freezing before the new card.

My video card is a GeForce FX 5200 PCI. Wish I had an AGP, but I got it as a gift.

I'm running on 640 RAM, I doubt lack of RAM is the problem. I'm going to upgrade to 1024 in a few weeks, though.

For the IRQ... I find that my Video Card and my Network Adapter are on the same IRQ. They're located on 18, my sound card is on 16.

And for the DXDiag file (I can't get MSInfo to load, so DXDiag is all you get, sorry) :

Oh, it's that PCI video card. It's not fast enough to run everquest well. PCI ports are about 80 times slower for graphics than a standard AGP card. Check Ebay, you may be able to pick up an agp card on the cheap if you don't mind used (assuming of course your motherboard has an agp card slot)

Pci video cards = very bad.

Sorry I can't give you better news there.

... You're kidding.

There's nothing that I can do, other than buy a new card?
This really sucks.

It's not so bad. You can get a card that will run it for like $40 on www.pricewatch.com

Or get a pretty decent card for like $75.

Ok.. Running FX5700 with latest drivers, etc. The POK freeze I am seeing is a HARD CPU loop in EQGAME.EXE. I am running on Win2K and I am able to Alt-Tab out of EQ, Ctl-Alt-Del to bring up Task manager, and use the KB to move around to see the cpu usage.. There is eqgame.exe running 100%. You can kill it with task manager, then ya have to get in from the top. I have only seen this in POK.

Before going out and purchasing a AGP video card I would be sure to check and make sure you mother board has an AGP slot, other wise you will be restricted to PCI only cards. If that is the case you may stikk benefit by getting a faster card than the one you currently have, even though Kao is right that PCI is much slower than AGP other cards have diffrent specs that may give you a boost. Oh and you could also try raising the amount of memory the card uses by changinf the driver settings.

HELP! I am having the same problem in PoK. I noticed I also have a PCI card, so maybe that is the problem, but the system is pretty new. Here are the specs:

Dimension 4600 Series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.4GHz
1024MB DDR SDRAM at 333MHz
128MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
7200 RPM Ultra ATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows XP Professional,Service Pack
Intel Pro 100M Integrated PCI NIC Card
56K PCI Data Fax Modem for Windows

Any suggestions?

I'm also having lockup problems. Started today, just sitting in PoK suddenly it froze up after about 20-30 minutes. Came back on, then froze again within 4-5 minutes.

My system has a Radeon 9600 AGP with 256mb RAM, a Duron 800 processor and 768mb RAM. I took a quick look at System Prefs and it showed audio, video and network cards all on IRQ 9?? Haven't had problems like this before. I did have some odd virus or exploit killing my network connection, but got that cleared up a week ago or so.

I will say this - for whatever reason, I do not freeze up if I run in an overhead view. It ain't pretty, but I don't have to stomp on the surge supressor, cussing and turning red-faced. This was never an issue for me before the last patch. I didn't even lag in PoK, except occasionally by the bank or Nex stone during a MGB.

Neat. Did smoke start coming out of the box immediately or are you still waiting?
