FFXI - Router ProblemsFollow

I went home for spring break, and when I came back there was a new Final Fantaxy XI patch. I installed the patch, and ever since there has been a problem with my router. I'm not saying it is the patch, but so far that's the most likely culprit for messing up my router.

Its not my computer or my modem because everything is hunky-dorey when I hook directly from the cable modem into my self-built PC. So that rules out my IP also. I would just go with this choice, but my two roommates get kinda annoyed when they cant get online cause Im bypassing the router :)

Anywho, what happens is POL launches normally, I can select my character and log into the world. Most of the time instantly my Receive will drop to 0 and I will slowly drop from 100% to 0% transmission then an error code will pop up with FFXI Error-4001 and says connection was lost and it will shut down now. Sometimes the Receive will raise back up for an instant and kinda bounce between 0 and <a number that is not zero>, however eventually 0 wins and it goes the same way I described if it was zero the entire time. Sometimes this takes several minutes to begin happening or even hours of unhindered play before this starts. But the times it stays up is very very very rare. In essence POL just quits sending packets to me it seems.

I tried opening the ports in port forwarding on my router that POL said needed to be opened. This didnt work so I just opened all of them. 1-65535, this isnt safe but I did it to see if it needed more ports or something... it still didnt work. We are also all set up for static IP's on our little 3 computer LAN. I have no idea what the deal is, but if anyone knows what I could be doing wrong with my router, I would much appreciate an answer. I have been playing FFXI since before Holloween last year and I dont wanna scrap all my work just cause it wont work with my router anymore. Thanks for your time and patience.

Apply the firmware patch for your router, that should do the trick.

this sounds like the problem i've been having, too.
i have the linksys 2.4 ghz 802.11b wireless-b broadband router.

edit: i installed the firmware patch, still having problems even after attempting to open ports. am going to reinstall now and see if it does anything.

If you are connection over wifi and having that issue, try turning off WAP encryption. that can ***** with some games. it's not the best solution, but it may work.

I've had WAP disabled from the start, since my network didn't seem to work when I had it enabled.

Just did a reinstall and still was disconnected. Browsing around on the forums, and it seems like other people (but obviously, not all) are having the same or similar problem. :( Wonder if it's because the servers are congested and there are too many people? Or if my router is still incorrectly configured (though it works just fine and I am never disconnected while browsing webpages, checking e-mail, downloading, etc.)..

with the firmware upgrade, it should work, unless the router is damaged or you have some wierd internet settings in place. you don't happen to have a software router up as well do you?

software router? no, not that i know of.

it's strange. i opened up all my ports and everything, and i never lose wireless signal ever.. except when i get DC'ed from the game and i notice i lost signal to the network. only happens when i'm in the game.

i'm gonna call POL on monday and see if they have anything to say or suggest. if worse comes to worse, i'll just reconfigure my network so i'm directly connected instead of wireless. :sigh:

thanks for the help. :)
