ok well the probelm happend since i installed the game last week. It def isnt connectiobn prob i dont believe cause i had my comp at my friends and we were both playing together through same router and his was fine. Anywayz the game is actually on its OWN formatted HDD, i bought the harddrive cause i only had a 20gig one and knew how big this game was so its just an 80gig with nothing but FFXI on it. The game runs really choppy and laggy especially in town near AH, or in large parties. heres my comp specs...and for the record i have forceware or whatever its called drivers for my vid card and there the most recent.

CPU: 2.2 ghz
Vid Card: Geforce FX 5200 PCI---I thought the fact thats its PCI might have somethin to do with prob but i dunno
Mem: 256MB
Direct3d tests all pass in dxdiag- version should be 9.0b or a not sure.
Cable connection
Runs other games such as counter-strike-diablo-and jedi knight perfectly

Thx in advance!!!!!

yeah, those pci cards are absolute crap. Also, you need at least 512mb ram to get any kind of decent performance

Getting a new motherboard with an AGP 8x slot would dramatically increase your performance. You should be ble to pick up an 845 chipset board on the cheapish ($80ish new, cheaper used, but I wouldn't reccommend a used one). An 875 chipset board would be better, but your existing system ram probably won't be fast enough to support the board.

so what would u upgrade first if u were in this situation...if it comes down to it i will upgrade memory and card but im not really made of money so if one will fix the problem a bit then that would be great. Im thinking memory cause my friend has a crappier vid card then i do and it runs nice....however he has 512MB or regular RAM.

Communitively speaking, video card is the biggest factor in the performance of this game. When I was having this problem, I upgraded (very nearly doubling the size of) everything in my PC (minus the video card) and noticed zero difference. Then I purchased an ATI Radeon 9800 XT and performed increased exponentially. Granted, this is a ridiculously expensive card, and I don't think the average gamer is down for dropping that much cash on a single piece of hardware, but that's just the best first hand example I can give you.

My previous video card was a GeForce FX 5600 256MB DDR and makes an INCREDIBLY effective paperweight and often moonlights as a doorstop. My benchmark with this card was in the 1700's. My benchmark with the same pc with the addition the ATI video card is 4000.

Every online benchmarking breakdown I've ever read in regards to this game ranks Radeon cards light years ahead of the nVidia's. You can get a Radeon 9600 from pricewatch.com for about $200 and I'd imagine your performance will be exceptional.

You might suffer from a lot of crunching due to the 256 MB of ram, but it is my opinion that your video card is your biggest culprite here.

Hope this helps ^^
