Coming back to the game and gunning for Dragoon. Seems a lot of the new changes will allow for plenty of decent solo play without the headaches of the past. Do I play normally to 30th, get Dragoon, and then move into some new area to solo? Or do I go straight to this new Abyssea area as a fresh level 1 character? I'm currently installing the game and curious about Abyssea and what it means for soloing. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Abyssea cannot be accessed without being level 30 first, but although you can go in at level 30, the content itself is designed for characters 75+. The only reason that players as low as 30 go into Abyssea is because the way that experience works in there, you can rapidly level a job via leeching in there, far faster than you could outside of Abyssea. That's all that Abyssea has to offer people that low level, but it's not something I'd advise because you'd level without keeping up with your weapon skill, and other issues along those lines.

Thanks for the info. Is soloing any easier than it was 3 years ago?

Try to get Grounds Tome or Fields Manual when leveling. Grounds Tome is always better.

My char was developed in Bastok, for early levels, i usually hide inside:
lv 1-12: Zerhun Mine
lv12-16: Dangruf Wadi

At this point, once u got chocobo, then u should be ok to travel between 3 nations and Jeuno.
lv16-26: Gusgen Mine (up to 30 with lower sync-level)
lv28-40: Korroloka Tunnel
lv35-70: Crawler's Nest
Lv70+: Kuftal Tunnel (actually, i m now 68 so i don't know where to go beyond lv70)

"You tried your best and
you failed miserably.
The lesson is 'NEVER TRY'."

Or, unless you got my lucky number.
My lucky number: -6

I'd hit Bostineux Oubliette (under San D'Oria) after that. P4 leeches can take you to cap.

You'll need to do a quest every 5 levels from 50 onwards to uncap your level. But only once, you don't have to do it for every job.
Oi FFXI, I'm back! Let's boogie...
