Hey everyone

Day 4 of me playing, and I decided to make DRG as my main job.

To level up to 30 the first time, I went with warrior, which is my subjob now.

However, I'm doing some reading and I'm seeing it's very versatile with a lot of jobs.

MY question is, would it be better to go with a mage job instead? Like red mage for the buffs they can bring?

Thank you

Oh, one more thing. Will I have to level up other jobs as my main job, in order to to subjob them once my DRG gets past a certain level? I'm at 27 now, so I wouldn't be able to just subjob a job to 49.

question pretty unclear, but yes, you'll have to do extensive leveling with other jobs in order to make your DRG "main" versatile. "main" is basically a state of mind, or a distinction in linkshells for lotting or what job you (mandatorily or whatever) take to events.

just try to benefit yourself as a player first and foremost, and keep in your mind that you "are a DRG main" where deciding on your goals and such.

also remember that there is no reward in the end; if you don't enjoy leveling up and such, you're making a big mistake by playing an mmo like ffxi.

Yea I'm sorry about that. Let me try to clear it up.

Will I have to level up different jobs as a main job, to become versatile subjobs.

And I actually have been having a real good time leveling :) Especially 15-30 in Gusgen mines

Sub jobs do not receive exp when you level a main job. Your warrior will remain lv 30 forever unless you go change to warrior in your mog house and level it.

As for what sub jobs, you should definately look into leveling Samurai as a sub job for dragoon before you get to far along. It is more or less the default sub job for dragoon at higher levels and will likely spend the vast majority of your time as Drg/Sam later in the game. This will cover you for most large events where your primary goal is to put the hurt onto whatever the group is fighting.

To be a complete drg, you will also want at least 1 mage sub job to take advantage of a healing wyvern type. You can solo like a mad man on exp kinds of stuff with a mage sub. This can be either Blue mage, Red mage, White mage or even Scholar depending on your taste. I still prefer Blue mage, but opinions differ. Now that both Red mage and blue mage offer haste like white mage and (soon) our wyverns will cure more status ailments, I dont really see much advantage to sub white mage except for Reraise which you can get from items, fields of valor etc.

something about a player genuinely brand-new to FFXI strolling along as a bright-eyed innocent DRG makes my day

good luck! you're in for plenty of fun along the way!

I restart my FFXI Draggon again recently.
It has been 6 years since i left my old dragoon @lv59 (Nettie@Lakshmi) because of long wait for party to exp.

I m back because FFXI is now ok to solo (l love to play in party, but cannot commit on steady online time, solo will be most of the case)

DRG is fun as great variety of subjob for different DRG. Therefore, I do planned a bit before i got/level my DRG.

Most of the time i do solo.
First, I level THF to 18 (i was wrong, i should get MNK first because Steal attack could only be useful on the first attack in solo)
Ask someone to help me to get subjob quest done
Then raise my RDM to 30 (I think for lv10-29, sub MNK is better than THF)
Make sure Dia and all bar-spell are ready, also, Deodorize, Sneak and Invisible are ready too
Get the DRK quest and level WAR with that stupid Great sword (i do get lv 12 by just slashing 100+ish mobs, i could level up more later)
Get DRG quest and also, make sure u got rank 2 in Sandy or Mission 2-3 in other area
I solo DRG quest with RDM (Sneak and Invisible are necessary for digging out your egg). The final dragon is easy for RDM.

Working on my DRG now. So far I got lv 36. In early levels (<20, i suggest DRG/Melee for quicker dmg because healing breath I is not useful). Also, /MNK with Boost is fun to chop EP mobs.
After lv 20 i got HB II and much better in solo.
After lv 30, i /THF for party (any melee u like) and i keep using RDM for solo.
After lv 40 u got HB III (which u start shining for /mage or /hybrid)
After lv 50 u should stick with /WAR for party (double attack)
After lv 60... hmm i don't know... see, /SAM (for WS), /WAR (for plain dmg) and even /DRK (for hybrid). But i heard /THF's SATA is gimp... nvm... will see after i ding Lv60
