So back when I played I was on my final relic upgrade. Totsukanotsurugi (sp?) was my weap aside from a hagun and the multi-attack guy from that CoP bomb side boss.
Regardless, that's neither here nor there. My question is, would someone like myself who has not played in ohhhhhhh five years struggle today? Keep in mind, and I say this with ALL the ego in the world (lulz), I was one hell of a samurai. Has the game changed much as far as our what's expected from a sam?
I remember early on when we could spam penta-thrust, we were gods and never had trouble fiding groups, then that got nerfed and it was slow going because of RNG's, then it seemed as though Sam's were in a great place (right around the release of ToAU, which is when I quit). How are we looking today? Is a sam a desirable class for xp groups, etc?
Anyhow, sorry for the randomness of my post, quitting smoking is kicking my ass!

Exping isn't the main stuff you're doing like it used to be. Now, whatever your job or level is, you can get into exp alliance as long as they have enough healer jobs. Outside Abyssea, they can level sync. Inside abyssea, they can have 1-2 powerful DD and everyone else can just sit back.
You probably need 2-3 session of a good session exping in Abyssea to get to level 90.
SAM isn't that much awesome in Abyssea due to lack of critical hit WS. Outside Abyssea, it's still okay.

SAM can get to a 5-hit build now with 22%+ Haste relatively easily, not to mention the Hasso/Zanshin buff which basically gives SAM native double attack with a TP Bonus. It also got a new ability which lets it self skillchain with only 100TP, and another which gives a boost to skillchain damage. So, its clear that SAM is better than it was before at 75. The problem is, so many other jobs got way way better with the introduction of Abyssea. SAM is a mid tier DD now in Abyssea, but it is certainly solid outside Abyssea. basically, if you haven't played the game in 5 years, welcome to a completely different game. So much has changed that it's basically not even the same game anymore that it was 5 years ago. Abyssea, level cap increases, changes to existing areas and events, there's been a couple expansions before the level cap increases that you probably missed. It's a completely different game, so to someone coming back after that long it'll be like starting over in a different game. there is literally nothing that is the same as it was 5 years ago.
But don't let that stop you from coming back. In my opinion the game is more fun now than it ever was, and it's not very hard to catch your levels up to the new max, nor is it hard to obtain new gear and other things. The amount of new content and such to take in may seem overwhelming, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad.

I left ffxi 2006.
Came back now a week ago. Its wonderful! haha
I started mnk just to get it going, got to 18 soloing and doing FoV pretty quick.
Its soo nice just strolling about and geting nice exp for everything you kill (the nice barret I got from abyssea collection is a sweet thing too!)
Anyway back in the day (2005-2006) 3-4k exp an hour was pretty good.
Yesterday I went from level 18 to 26 in four or five hours! Yes 4-5 hours of massive exp doing GoV in Gusgen Mines. 2
4k exp in around 20 minutes time.
And no problem with installing the game or creating SE account or paying (even tho Im living in a none SE Suported Areas of the world!haha )
For me its just a great comback! :D

SAM is ~meh~ inside abyssea but still godly outside. The big baddies now are VWNM's which have ridiculous defense. They are like Abyssea NM's but without any of the crour / atma buffs people got used to. From what I've seen, our LS SAM's deal the most damage when the "kill it" order is given. The other jobs got buffed due to having crit WS and RR atma existing, take away RR and suddenly their damage drops back down.
