What makes SAM feel unique?Follow

Hello everyone!

So, I've been leveling my brothers SAM from 75-90 and done some trials to to surprise him. Now, I've always liked SAM, liked the idea of the TP master, the looks etc, but as I was playing I started thinking. Now after the cap has been raised, what is it that makes SAM "unique" anymore?

I was wondering because as I was leveling I realized "everyone" was using meditate, sekkanoki, hasso, third eye etc. I started looking and I realized, hey... basically everything a SAM gets that is useful (as far as JA goes) aside from 1 is attainable from /sam, and mostly even without the JAs being affected much.

I thought to myself, well I know SE said they wanted to make SAM a good subjob, but still. It feels like they did a good job making SAM a great subjob, but it seems they forgot to try and keep something unique as far as JAs go to SAM main. Comparing SAM to /SAM and another great subjob for melee WAR I see that even here they seem to have managed better. I mean, warcry/berserk/agressor are great abilities which you can get via /WAR, but as far as I can see (I don't play WAR so I don't really know how useful they are, but they seem good or at least decent) WAR main still has 5 unique to them JAs.

Comparing that to a SAM which as far as I can see has 4 in total which are unique, of which (Again SAM is not my own job so I can't say for sure, but it seems this way for an outsider like me) 1 seems great (Hamanoha), 2 could be situationally ok I guess... although I personally think I am being rather kind in that assessment (Sengikori/Blade bash) and then there is one which I dunno what it would be good for tbh (Shikikoyo).

Again, comparing to other 2-handers like DRG which keep their wyvern (which enables them to do so much /mage and stuff). Even NIN which I felt used to suffer from the same thing as I feel SAM is now, seems to have gotten away from that somewhat with innin/yonin and new spells that feel rather unique.

Overall It feels like a lot of the other jobs have kept their uniqueness intact a lot better than SAM has. I feel it would be cool to see some of the uniqueness come back to SAM main. I guess this goes in general for a lot of jobs, but since I tried my brothers SAM I just noticed it a lot.

Anyway, what do you guys think, am I just someone who doesn't know how to play SAM and therefore I don't understand what it is that makes SAM different or do you agree somewhat? Also, for the record I am not complaining about the power of SAM compared to other jobs or w/e.

SAM does single hit WS, which means generally that they don't have to be concerned with accuracy on WS at all. They can just load up on STR and/or attack (Kaiten/Fudo) and WS away. This matters less now in the age of Abyssea and atmas. SAM also has massive Store TP boosts compared to other jobs, so our WS frequency is generally very high, and self skill chaining becomes pretty easy. We aren't the overall best pure DD in the game (WAR probably is), but we do very well, especially outside Abyssea. The one thing I can say about SAM vs /SAM is other jobs have to /SAM to get Hasso, SE+TE, Meditate, and Store TP traits. That limits them a little, while SAM can maintain those abilities and choose a different sub.

I agree that I wish they would give SAM the ability to do something a little more unique. SAM has kind of fallen off to the side since Abyssea came out. Its my favorite job and I wish they would do something to keep it fresh.

I have no idea what voidwatch is, and wont bother with it until i've finished abyssea, but for small group Dyna (PLD WHM BLM BRD DD DD) Sam can easily fit both those DD spots chuck out those 5-HIT build ws's just how we like too.

Don't be demorolised by SAM in abyssea, we are in the last stages if abyss content and who knows whats on the new horizons. If you love the job, gear it up as much as possible, the future is looking bright :)

Yeah, like I said I was just leveling the job for my brother (He was happy to come home to a higher level SAM btw :) ) and it got me thinking that is all. I really wasn't complaining about SAMs power, not because I don't like seeing them do well, but because we will have fun either way and like you said what jobs do "best" seems to change from time to time anyway. :)

Also, as we progress towards the new and final cap I am sure more diversity will come between all jobs (or so I hope), was just fun to hear what you guys thought about it atm.

probably along different lines than what you are asking, but kinda the same. I'm just coming back after a year layoff, and playing Wow and Lotr. I love Samurai movies, foreign and domestic. I don't know of any other game where you can be a Samurai. Every game seems to have their warrior, mage, healer, etc.

OMG me too

My two Blu ray favourites are 'The Warlords' and 'Three Kingdoms', Kill Bill Obviously aswell.

Both films I give an easy 10/10.

Going back to the old, the previously banned babycart series are pretty good.

I really loved "The Last Samurai", "Kill Bill" was pretty good too. Can't seem to recall any other samurai movies, but I'd definitely jump at the chance to see a new good one. Samurai are cool hehe.

I just watched Warlords and Three Kingdoms- Awesome!
Check out Jade warrior, not Samurai exclusive, but an awesome chinese/swedish foreign film.
I watch kill bill 1 and 2 on my birthday every year.
Another crazy awesome movie is supposed to come out very soon, "13 Assasins" One review I heard was, "If Kill Bill didn't have enough sword fighting for you, this is your movie." O.O

actually, I just found out 13 Assasins was just released on DVD. The director became most famous for his movie "Ichi the Killer" where barf bags where handed out at the theater, and were used...

Seven Samurai is pretty good, although I don't know how well it adheres to true samurais. I am just starting to see all the Kurosawa movies, but they are good.

Tbf, when I said 3 Kingdoms thats not really a Samurai film. More than Samurai I love the whole epic Chinese/Japanese/Mongolian etc warfare or mythology's. Epic Asian war films with a Braveheart theme etc. Especially Chinese or Japanese wars, but obviously doesn't matter what part of the world the film was made.

Edit, had to stop Jade Warrior DL til 1st of June, i'm 38GB's/40GB's DL limit for this month. Majority of it just streaming TV channels catch up. (or pornhub.com on occasion - yeh yeh i'm only human)
