Hello everyone!
So, I've been leveling my brothers SAM from 75-90 and done some trials to to surprise him. Now, I've always liked SAM, liked the idea of the TP master, the looks etc, but as I was playing I started thinking. Now after the cap has been raised, what is it that makes SAM "unique" anymore?
I was wondering because as I was leveling I realized "everyone" was using meditate, sekkanoki, hasso, third eye etc. I started looking and I realized, hey... basically everything a SAM gets that is useful (as far as JA goes) aside from 1 is attainable from /sam, and mostly even without the JAs being affected much.
I thought to myself, well I know SE said they wanted to make SAM a good subjob, but still. It feels like they did a good job making SAM a great subjob, but it seems they forgot to try and keep something unique as far as JAs go to SAM main. Comparing SAM to /SAM and another great subjob for melee WAR I see that even here they seem to have managed better. I mean, warcry/berserk/agressor are great abilities which you can get via /WAR, but as far as I can see (I don't play WAR so I don't really know how useful they are, but they seem good or at least decent) WAR main still has 5 unique to them JAs.
Comparing that to a SAM which as far as I can see has 4 in total which are unique, of which (Again SAM is not my own job so I can't say for sure, but it seems this way for an outsider like me) 1 seems great (Hamanoha), 2 could be situationally ok I guess... although I personally think I am being rather kind in that assessment (Sengikori/Blade bash) and then there is one which I dunno what it would be good for tbh (Shikikoyo).
Again, comparing to other 2-handers like DRG which keep their wyvern (which enables them to do so much /mage and stuff). Even NIN which I felt used to suffer from the same thing as I feel SAM is now, seems to have gotten away from that somewhat with innin/yonin and new spells that feel rather unique.
Overall It feels like a lot of the other jobs have kept their uniqueness intact a lot better than SAM has. I feel it would be cool to see some of the uniqueness come back to SAM main. I guess this goes in general for a lot of jobs, but since I tried my brothers SAM I just noticed it a lot.
Anyway, what do you guys think, am I just someone who doesn't know how to play SAM and therefore I don't understand what it is that makes SAM different or do you agree somewhat? Also, for the record I am not complaining about the power of SAM compared to other jobs or w/e.
