I've been looking in to this whole Magian Trials thing lately, and can't figure out what I'm supposed to be aiming for... that is to say, which trial should I do? I've been looking but can't figure out exactly which Great Katana is the best one and I don't want to make a mistake... or do all roads lead to Rome, so to speak? I'm a level 75 Samurai and I've got the Donto, but am trying to figure out which trials to do... any help would be appreciated.

So how do I get those? All I say is a big trail of trials that slowly upgrades a weapon, which you trade in to get another weapon that you slowly upgrade. I can't find how it turns into these weapons I keep seeing.
edit: Okay, I think I'm figuring it out... so trial x gives you say, fire resistance which is related to STR, so then further pursuing that trial will lead to STR, attack, etc.? and if I'm following this right ... the weapon I want is the hyogugusarinotachi +1? I swear I've seen weapons a lot better than this... gaaaahhhh....

new wiki really botched up the GKT trials but for your WoE/Empyrean path its the NM path in short just look at the wiki and follow the trial numbers and you'll get it.
STP/WS dmg requires the level 80 great katana Keitonotachi, which you get from the same box as the Dondo. And they follow the same route up til trial 1596. If you wanna look ahead in your trials you can select next trial and look at what weapon the reward is if you get lost.

The sTP GKT is absolute GARBAGE. DO not sully your Samurai with that junk.
Before someone comes back with "5-hit!" yeah if he had gear for 5-hit, he'd go for Masamune or mini-Fudo one, not some junky sTP. sTP Gkt = crap.
Get 80, because unless you have an LS willing to help you in the harder aspects of FFXI, Donto is no good. Get the level 80 Gkt, check wiki on how to do Weapon Skill Dmg +10% and do it.
All you do is follow exactly what the chart says, Use WS X times vs X mob, or kill X mob with X WS. Super simple.

so are you saying I should work my way up to the level 80 one, or once I get to level 80 there will be a base weapon to start with that I should wait until?

you can start the WoE/Emp path at 75, but for the STP/WS dmg path, youll need to be level 80 to use the GKT for those trials. As you progress youll need 80 and 85 for further trials so id honestly just level 1st with some easy to get abyssea NM great katana. At the very least get 80 1st.
(not even touching STP/WS DMG, if you can 5 hit with it with no real loss, it beats ws dmg with 6 hit, he should be aiming for fudo gkt regardless)

2) the stp one is garbage and you can 5 hit other GKs
3) If you can't figure out how magian trials work, abandon hope for Masamune/WoE

Its all about the WSDMG+10% - the silly thing is the route is even easier than the STP version, and 2-3SAM's doing the final trial at same time = win.
One of the easiest Magian weapons to make outside of ice trial weapons that can be mostly done in ulegrand Range, but im betting the MAB GKT isn't much use to you ; ;

I'd say the Keitonotachi +1 (WS DMG +10%) is the class of all Great Katana not named Masamune or Amanomurakumo. The trials aren't bad, though you may find yourself chafing at the repetitiveness once in a while. A suggestion for the final trial would be to visit Jugner Forest [S] and fight War Smilodons (there are 10 in a section not very far east of the Campaign stronghold).

Hiradennotachi+1 and Kokush*tsunotachi+1 (OAT) should both be better than Keito+1 (WS DMG). Keito+1 is the best of the soloable/easy ones.
