It's thought to be dropped from the Shadow Lord in the past. There's actually another thread that has some speculation on it in the Paladin forums. ^^ Notice is says 'absorbs' and not 'annulls' as the other shadow gear does. :D

Baa, I would not even worry about it. 99 Gear is sure to be better than this garbage.

If we always waited for gear that's potentially (as we have NO idea how the stats for that gear are going to be or how they plan to implement already obtained 75 gear into the 99 era of FFXI) then we would never obtain any gear.

The armor piece isn't going to be worthless, as SE has specifically said that they intend to keep from making a lot of the existing "top of the line" gear become obsolete. Whether that ends up happening or not is the question, but considering that the Nocturnus armor is basically available now, and the 99 cap is several months off, it'd be foolish to just up and ignore it because there might be something better coming out at the end of the year.

As for where the armor comes from, to be more specific it appears that it might come from a "Splitting Heirs" -esque Campaign Ops battle that becomes available once a nation takes control of Castle Zvahl in the past.
