I have not played ffxi for about a year. I am getting back into it due to RLF wanting me to play with them. I am wanting something new from what I used to play. I am thinking of making sam my next 75. Right now I have rdm bst and mnk at 75. right now my sam is at 46. I have not played sam for about two years.
My question is
At endgame are sams still the skill chain guru. Before it used to seem they would find out what skill chains to use and they would set them up and basically keep them flowing right. My friend told me now a days they are more hit, gain tp, ws, repeat (maybe a little more in between abilities, gear swap, ect). More just spamming ws when ready then trying to setup skill chains. This seems alot different then before. is this correct?

there still used occasionally. the only time my ls sets them up is for KS99/ouryu/JoL...and i think thats it.

sc's can still be done on other things, but generally melee spam ws is enough to get the job done without downing the blm pty because of huge spike damage.

that doesnt mean melee can do whatever they want though lol, they can make a dirt sandwhich to if they really want to.

For the most part Skillchains are mostly for HNMs and high level mobs where there isnt alot of WS spams. (Skygods~Sea~HNM) And everywhere else is just a WS bonanza. As a SAM though, I recommend you learn all the skillchains anyway. (At least all that go to and from Yuki,Gekko,Kasha,Rana,Kaiten) This also includes WS from other jobs that are usually spammed like Drakesband,RaginRush,Guillitine,A.Fist. Reason being that although alot of ppl don't look for them anymore, you can occasionaly stack on 50~1500 damage after your WS just by knowing them. And who doesnt love Damage as a DD. ^^
Have a good time son... have a really good f*ckin time!

I find that if everyone in a party actually knows how to skillchain and you don't have to stop what you're doing to explain it, and people skillchain naturally, it's more effective than just spamming gekko...

Whilst this might be the way SE originally intended it, unfortunately 99 times out of 100, it really is better to spam WSs.

Me and a couple of my friends actually still like to skillchain. It's more of a moment by moment thing as opposed to planning it out. Playing around with Faith Bagh's in limbus I found I could pop out a light or dark like nothing. Me and my friend(SAM) were gaining tp at almost exactly the same rate and we would spam and correct our WS to each others on the fly. Some of the mages even got in on the fun with on the fly bursts. The biggest thing is knowing the skillchain chart which most people these days don't even bother with. My SAM is lvl 51 and I can do back to back 3 way fusions with a wing, med and 2hr.

The thing is, people gain tp at different rates and it's pointless to sit and wait for someone else to ws. If you are skilled and knowledgable enough you can know when to use your tp effectively to pop off a skillchain or two here and there while not wasting time waiting for others.
