Main: Hagun/Soboro/Tomoe (based on situation)
Grip: Rose/Pole
Ammo: Tiphia/OSatchet
Head: Askar/Champions Galea ~> I know Ace's would be ideal I haven't sold my soul back to HNM yet
Neck: Chiv Chain/Bull Necklace ~> Justice would again be an upgrade but SAM is still fresh so not on priority for it atm
Earrings Fowling/Brutal (Bushi isn't an option so much)
Body: Hauby/Domaru(WS macro)
Hands: Hachi- Currently 2/5 sTP till thats done trying to keep 6hit
Rings: Ruby/Rajas/Ulthalam (Ruby is for GKT WS Ulth for melee and penta)
Back: Amem+1/Smil+1
Waist: Swift/Warwolf
Legs: 4th Schoss
Feet: Fuma > 4th Schuhs

I'm taking what Ive heard from SAMs I've contact with, with a grain of sand as gear choices seem off, however I seem to be lacking. With Sobo on Birds(mostly running out of sushi early) my YGK ranges 400-800, Polearm 600-1300. Hagun tends to be 600-1100 on Mamools. I don't tend to go food heavy as merits are come and go so it tends to be more Miths/Crab. If it'd make any difference relative merits:

8 Polearm
8 Great Katana
2 Overwhelm

I know the general merit path, but I'm just not sure I feel like 5/5 Overwhelm is going to show me to higher WSs overall. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Only major upgrade I can see besides the stuff you said isn't possible is Byakko's Haidate. Don't scoff at Overwhelm merits either; They will do far more for your WS damage than any amount of gear tweaking will do. Your numbers aren't that bad either.

Oh no I don't doubt Overwhelm merits, more being fresh to 75 I have other jobs getting merits so I'm just not 5/5 yet. In the scheme of things 19% doesn't seem to be zomg, but reading some threads it seems to different then I thought.

Wait, what? How would something that directly increases WS dmg not show you higher WSs? It's quite possibly -the- best cat2 merit in the game.

grip- mith+1/plat+1 for soboro
neck- PCC, WS gorget
ear- Wyvern for /DRG
rings- ecophoria a good sTP option
legs- Byakkos is probably the single biggest improvement you have right now, get a merc shell to sell you one if you have to. Askar dirs aren't bad in the mean time.

top tier gear to work towards later- Usu feet (full set if you're masochistic), ace's helm, Hachiryu haidate, Haub+1, Kirin's Osode, relic/mythic/sTP rindo GK, black thalum, Bushinomimi, Dusk+1 hands, foragers/cerb+1, and velocity/speed belt.

You need to be above ~67% haste for turban to be better (aka you'd need double march, haste, hasso, and a better haste set than he has).

Question about this part Shinta, why are you suggesting he use these over rose grip? Well, I don't see sTP merits mentioned, so I suppose if he doesn't have them it would make it useless, but otherwise it's a nice sTP item that helps keep full haste and a 6-hit, no?

If it lets him add more dmg/haste in another slot while keeping 6-hit, sure

(I haven't played since rose was introduced, they're just better than pole for soboro, usefulness of rose is going to vary as he adds more sTP merits and what he has available to swap around)

Sorry I probably should clear up what I meant about Overwhelmm merits. I'm not doubting they're useful period, its more I don't understand FFXI math fully and ya know 2% more damage on for example 1000 damage would be 20 more damage. I'm fully going for 5/5 Overwhelm as it seems an obvious choice comparatively. As in I'm around people saying they constantly do 1600 YGK and I don't see Overwhelm 5/5 compensating, but as I said I do not have huge understanding

Alot of "top tier" upgrades are more obvious to me, as looking at gear versus what I have make sense. Also, no I dont have full sTP that is my next merit category to finish off.

Part of my reason for asking so much is I tend to get the DomaRUUUUU, non 5 hit sTP rindo, KO TP SAMs so I don't really care to get advice there. Really I liked SAM, when I got it to 50ish I didn't have the money to get a majority of things that were considered normal for SAMs. So now that I've set myself into a place where I can make decent money I'm happy to try SAM again, I'd just like to not be a "band wagon SAM" forever. Somethings like Bushi will forever be away as I have jobs that make Suppa desirable, but yeah.

They're lying to you if they say they're "constantly" doing 1600 YGK.

2% on a 1000 dmg WS is indeed only 20 dmg, but 19% on that same 1000 dmg WS is 190 dmg. Every WS. And it adds up quite a bit over time. What I did is made sure I had enough sTP for my 6hit, then went for 3/5 Overwhelm (where you still get 5% a pop), then went back to cap sTP and shift my gear around for a more desireable setup. That may not help your problem with bigger WS's, but it will help with pushing out more WS's, which leads to more damage anyhow.

Best of luck!

^- *this*

With the absolute best gear in the game and ridiculous support vs easy mobs you'd be lucky to avg 1200+. 1600+ is a top dmg DA WS w/ very good gear/buffs and full overwhelm (or slashing weak mob). In a merit situation you should expect a Hagun avg somewhere in the 800-1k range varying with gear/mob/support.
