Had the martial master bonus on Pandy this past week (it's gone now ;;) but got my parrying from 250 to 260.8 (yeah, that'll teach me for going to bed .2 away from a lvl huh?).

Was in tree, mostly on EM mandys, and EM/T crabs... tomoe, boxer's mantle, af+1 pants on. I guess it's possible to cap in the tree but the lack of T mobs kinda hurts. I ended up tanking 2 mobs at once, killing a DC while letting a T take swings at me. When the DC was dead, I'd get another one lol. Was obviously /dnc for this as I was soloing the whole time. That method actually works wonders, especially if you can find a pair of EMs and you can pull it off. I'd alternate between parry gear and eva skill gear if I was getting hit too much.

Few questions though:

1) I was using hauby for its eva down but wondered if the AGI down negated that? Would I be better off just strapping on Osode?

2) I'm not at all familiar with the Den of Rancor. Have no map but obviously can look at one online. Just wondering where I can find black manyds to skill off there? Getting a bit tired of searching the tree and seeing nothing but DCs left.

3) What are people's experiences like with skilling parry without the martial master bonus? Worthwhile? I got to about 244 just xping and doing events on various jobs. I got to 247 trying to skill parry purposefully a few times but results were blah at best (i'll admit to not being geared all that well for it then). 247 to 260 all with the skill up bonus and even then it seemed like .5-.8 lvl per hour. Occasionally I'd get a hot streak like one crab gave me .8 on its own. One night I got 2 lvls in about 90 minutes. I don't mind grinding it out but if I'm going to spend 1-2 hours doing it, really need to see at least half a lvl.

lol, my parry skillz are at 159 (I seem to get a good amount of parrys in, but almost never seem to skill up, aside from lvling npc in the tree), so I say you're better off than me.

1. If the AGI +/- is still the same formula as it was a while ago, I'd say that the -parry would be negligible, since it'd come out to about -2.5 for parrying.

2. No. Plenty of fish, lizzies, tonberries, and bats, but no black mandies (homunculi for the technical, although mandies themselves I thought were already homunculi).

3. I've never tried to solely focus on lvling my parry, so I couldn't say whether it was better with the martial master or not; although I dare to conjecture that it would be better with said ability, rather than without.

They ain't got nothin' on us Blue Mages. We kill monsters, eat their souls, and we don't even use barbecue sauce. And we're still hungry.

We're bastards.

If you enter the Den just east of the...uh...lakish area with the tall weeds where you pop a couple NMs for NIN af; there should be black mandies down there. I skilled shield there on PLD for a bit.

My friend capped his parry in Castle Oztroja (s). At the entrance there are several yagudos that con T to VT, just try to stay away from the BLM one and you should be fine. If you want to stay in Boyahda you should just go ahead and fight the goobbues and make a few bucks while you're at it.

As for gear I would suggest wearing Arhat+1s for head and body. As the above said Osode's increase for parry is pretty negligible and -dmg makes it easier (and safer) when fighting stronger monsters. For food I would eat fish kabobs for defense.

I forgot about the skill up bonus and did not level up my parry. Come to think of it maybe that was my chance to finally cap it, I'm at 259. I kind of gave up on it after spending like 3 hours and only getting .3 skill up.

Tougher mobs are up stairs.

It's much more important to lower your eva. Luisant Haubert (-12eva) is also available. Focus on +parry skill whenever possible.

Pucks (black mandies) are found just inside the Den of Rancor side entrance (entered to from J-7 Yhoator jungle).

Tav Tacos/salad, shallops tropical also good

2nd'd

OP- the difference between capped parry and non-capped parry vs anything worthwhile is not worth the time it takes to focus on capping it. You'd be better off just letting yourself take hate in merits or farming high level mobs and let it come naturally while being productive than wasting your time focusing on just skilling parry.

Kk,

All sounds like good advice. I don't think I'll run out and waste hours on it atm but the next time martial master is back in play, I'd just like to be prepared n take advantage of it. I read 1 lvl of parry is only 0.125% proc rate so capping it would only be 1% from where I'm at now. Parry and club are the only 2 skills on SAM left uncapped. I began my FFXI life as a WAR and as such, developed a habit of skilling up stuff lol. At nearly 261, it's like I can see the finish line and whenever i get martial master back, I'd probably make a run at capping it or at least getting closer.
