Samurai Equipment Guide
________________________________

Disclaimer: This is nothing more than a visual look at the equipment for SAMs from 1-75. It does not include specialty weapons/armor such as equip needed for /RNG. For the armor, I did not include the low level gear items needed to upgrade gear dropped in Salvage. I only included stat armor. For the level ranges (generally lower lvl) where there are no +stats for sams, use whatever is appropriate for the level.

Also, before reading this, you may be interested in checking out thisStore TP gear by level wrote by Akisushiva~

milich wrote:
there's a mild misunderstanding about crit rate going on here. crit rate is NOT like haste; it does NOT get better the more you have. in fact, it gets slightly worse the more you stack it (every 1% crit rate you add to your current rate has a slightly lower % DoT bonus). i gave a very quick illustration of this on the DRK forums very recently if you don't see why. if you want i'll come back and explain again here (the short version is: your total DoT is a number that gets bigger for every crit, but every crit adds a static amount to your DoT. therefore, every crit adds the same number to a constantly increasing number, therefore each crit% point adds a lower DoT % increase)
edit: here's the explanation on the drk forum.

this is a very good modern equip guide and should be stickied. also, i think you should edit in a link to the recent "store TP by level" thread (i don't have time to find it, but will edit the link into this post if no one finds it before me), because it would be a great supplement. edit: here is the store TP guide.

there are some problems in the guide, all of which are easily fixed. i'm kind of short on time right now, but i'll go through as many as i can. if you need more detail, i'll respond again and supply it.

ammo:

mention RSE satchets, especially elvaan.

--

back:

wyvern mantle (or whatever it's called) that gives +ATT when /DRG would be a good addition, perhaps with a note that the merits of subbing /DRG are arguable. (/DRG is nice if you have the mantle, wyvern earring, swift belt, and fumas when you can wear all of them, nice 20-30 for ATT bonus and jump, and pretty good at 30 but inferior to /WAR---i know i know, this isn't a subjob guide, but mentioning the equip is a good idea)

--

ear:

wyvern earring, for same reason as above (adds +5 haste when /DRG)

optical earring-- you say is good for low levels... the +1 ACC may outweigh 2ATT, but given the small amount of ATT you have at lv10, it's probably a wash (and thus a waste).

--

ring:

the best lowbie ring is Mighty Ring, +1STR and 30min enchantment of +5ATT. you can wear 2, and get +10ATT from enchantment (it stacks). Vision Ring is good to mention as well, with its +2ACC enchantment, but 2x mighty is best. i always suggest that people buy 2 and use them until venerer and woodsmans/snipers, or until the charges run out then replace with courage until the ACC rings.

--

grip:

Quote:
65- Claymore Grip Critical Hit Rate: 3%
KSNM drop-
This grip would be great with max crit hit merits and Onikiri while fighting Imps/Demons.

there's a mild misunderstanding about crit rate going on here. crit rate is NOT like haste; it does NOT get better the more you have. in fact, it gets slightly worse the more you stack it (every 1% crit rate you add to your current rate has a slightly lower % DoT bonus). i gave a very quick illustration of this on the DRK forums very recently if you don't see why. if you want i'll come back and explain again here (the short version is: your total DoT is a number that gets bigger for every crit, but every crit adds a static amount to your DoT. therefore, every crit adds the same number to a constantly increasing number, therefore each crit% point adds a lower DoT % increase)

edit: here's the explanation on the drk forum.

--

hands:

you typo'd the level for horomusha kote.

you mention that ochiudo's kote are probably better than dusk even in a haste setup... this is probably false, but we could explore/argue about it if you wanted.

--

GK:

i don't believe onimaru has a hidden crit bonus, but the one you listed is so small i'm confused about how it could have been discovered or tested. however, it definitely DOES have an ACC bonus (+5) that you left off.

--

there may be some other things, but those are all i could find offhand right now. it's a very right-minded and helpful guide though, definitely should be stickied.

edit: added some links, also want to add:

lightning bow +1 should probably be on there. many SAM use it for the DEX + being able to fire an arrow now and then.

Cool, the old guide needed a big updating!

    -Ace's helm has +7 accuracy
-Saotome Koshi-Ate also comes from Dynamis-Qufim

-Really minor nitpicks: Speed Belt is KS99, Askar Korazin is missin' the n, some of the head items are jammed together without spaces

We've needed a good, post-update guide and this certainly fits the bill. Rate up!

While extremely minor, I'd like to offer a few (minor) revisions/corrections

    Back
*Jaguar Mantle. It was changed from Jaeger a ways back

    Body
Might want to give a few more lower-level options such as
*Centurion's Scale Mail (30) Does nothing notable for SAM but a Def upgrade. Some may want to opt for it over Power Gi
    *Iron Scale Mail (36) Ditto
*Royal Squire's Chainmail (40) Realistically, Jujitsu Gi blows this away but also realistically not ever John Q. Firstjobto75 SAM can afford it ^^

    Head
*Centurion's Visor (30) Again, because not everyone will have an Empress Hairpin to tide them over until Voyager's (or Walk/Valk)

    Great Katanas
    *AF Great Katana = Magoroku
*While the Spear of Trials can be used for SAM, I think a lot of new SAM might be more interested in the Tachi of Trials :)
Dmg: 76 Dly: 450 Latent Effect: HP: 20 Latent Effect: Ice: 10 Latent effect: Dark: 10

    Polearms of Note
*Iron Ram Lance: DMG: 70 Dly:365 AGI+2 Damage Taken -10% Enhances "Resist Silence" effect Situational useage, at best, but this opens up the option of a Damage Reduction build...

    Hands
*Rasetsu Tekko(+1) Cheap piece for soloing...
def: 24 attack: +2 Evasion +10 Latent Effect: Counterattack +1

My days of exp pre-60 are long since past, but I hear that Penta-thrust beats out Enpi/Jinpu now. It's either Soboro or a good Polearm like a Kamayari (+1).

Also, I like my Hagun and all, but it's not always the best for exp. Although this is technically my opinion (however based on a LOT of calculations, including gear setups), Soboro Sukehiro and Onimaru consistently equal or outperform it. So don't just give Hagun the crown, tell it to share with others. (Actually, give it to Amano, and make a fake one that the others can share).

    Just a slight slight correction.

Ninurta's Sash doesn't actually drop from AV. The Sin of Indignation does, and then you trade it to an NPC in Tav Safehold for the belt. Same thing with Mars's Ring etc.

Obviously not a huge deal, but I thought I'd point it out.

Not until you can cap accuracy and even then there are better alternatives. I really wouldn't TP in +DEX rings if I had access to Sniper's, Woodman's or even a Venerer

War Bow +1 is the best bow you can equip for /RNG for a very, VERY long time, and thus I believe it should be mentioned. This is my bow of choice for anything capped 50 and above, since /RNG is my sub choice at that range. (60 cap Ballista as SAM/RNG is probably one of the best jobs on the field in my opinion.)

Very nice, I had missed some of the newer items released over the last few months.

I kinda wish the rating system from the previous guide would have made it into the new one.
It's not really a clear enough when specifying whether gear is TP/WS/Haste (I'll admit it is on some pieces).

Having the dps value on weapons would be useful addition, ffxiah or ffxisomepage have the values if needed.

Well it doesn't -hurt- you. As he shows, you get less of an increase of DoT, but you still deal MORE damage. So you still gain, just not in similar % as to lower. More crit is good, just not when you could have better. This is why Pole > anything unless Soboro.

As for your guide... I appreciate the compilation of all available Sam gear but to be completely honest, one could simply search SAM on usable gear and find all of that. The questions people have are
What is the best, and for how long?
    Not "What can I use?"

Good research work, it is appreciated :) But just a suggestion, remove the garbage from it (Bushido Cape? H.Kote?) and give level gaps to use it with^^

Just a small note, you seems ot have forget that there is Artifact +1 equip in FF11 too. since the guide is dated from 12.02.08 I was expecting those to be here.

Other than that seems nice. Also why smilodon mantle +1 is not mentionned as a good ws piece ? I dont think anything can beat the 5 str on it or I understood sam ws calculation wrong ?

Not really sure how to respond to this... I did list AF+1 that I thought were actually helpful to SAM.

The smilodon mantle(+1) was listed... and it doesn't beat Amemet+1. There was a post awhile back showing this.

This. Stacking Crit+ will increase damage because you will critical more. The only time it will hurt DoT is when you're stacking Crit over something else that would improve DoT.

Why are Destroyers such a widely used endgame MNK weapon? Good Damage, low delay, 6% critical hits. Puts them fairly close in parse to Spharai. (sp?)

His point mathmatically isn't wrong, but logically, it is. Yes, by stacking Crit you're not gaining damage because stacking crit just increases the % chance critical will occur, not the base damage you're doing, the speed you're swinging, or how accurate you are. However, at 20% crit+ you're going to do more damage than 6% crit+ (because you're criticalling 14% more of the time, roughly) so long as you're not replacing any of those other important DoT stats.

Ideally everyone would have the best gear available, but realistically this isn't possible. Some people don't have a lot of play time, some people do. Some people have full usukane, some people have SH+1/dusk pants+hands/fumas. Some people would benefit from stacking crit+ gear when they are not yet able to attain some of the better gear out there.

That is why that excerpt should be removed, because milich is a very respected poster, and that blurb is very misleading.

    DEF: 35 HP +50 VIT +15 +50

And I don't know if it's worth being on the list:

    DMG: 70 Delay: 378 Accuracy +4

Just a few tweaks in mind. Apart from the items mentioned below, it would be worthwhile also linking the SAM thread discussing SAM WS accuracy testing and a general comment about +STR equipment being generally accepted as the best WS gear for SAM's Yuki/Gekko/Kasha WS.

Pole Grip: Best strap for SAM (even with Soboro) especially for melee WS.

Shinimusa Hara-Ate: wear either this or Rajas Ring after LV50 to lower the number of melee hits to reach 100% TP, change to Jaridah/Scorpion/Haubergeon when available.

Usukane Sune-Ate: best SAM feet armour.

Is it pretty new? None of the other job forums I've looked at mention it either.
