i'm a n00b sammy on account that i'm not really fluent yet with all the sam slang and stuff (i know hauby and stuff like that though), i was just thinking that maybe it would be a good idea to add a little slang dictionary at the end of the original post. like:

Quote:
hauby - Haubergeon
wing - Icarus Wing
Okote - blah blah blah
SFG = ????

that kinda thing.

and i'm not sure what parsing is. i believe its some technical thing that relates more to melees but i really don't know... and to be honest [just a side note] i don't even know what IMO means T_T

so a little slang dictionary and terms for sam would be nice, with some little definitions about why that item is sam-friendly (unless it's armor or something)... like icarus wings are nice because they give you TP.

so that's just a suggestion, if there are any replies to it i may not get to them, so don't worry about it; just add it if you think it's a worth-while cause. ^_^

IMO is more of a general internet term. It means "in my opinion", sometimes seen as IMHO. (In my humble opinion) I'm sure there must be a internet slang dictionary somewhere out there.

As for SFG, that's Spiked Finger Gauntlets, which I don't think really deserves an abbreviation except for it's annoyingly long name. I'm not sure what other SAM-related abbreviations would cause confusion.

Parsing refers to a third-party program (technically prohibited by the TOS, or terms of service put forth by SE [Square Enix >_<]) which parses, or pulls specific bits of info from the game for interpretation. More often than not, when people say parsing, they are referring to programs which can calculate the amount of damage you are doing, among other things, over a given period of time. They often use this as "proof" of certain things, but given the sometimes faultiness of parser programs as well the immense amount of variables involved, you should always take parser info with a grain of salt.

that's good enough for me, thanks Darth.

i really didn't know how much other slang or abbreviations there were for sam, so i just wanted to present the idea in case people that were more experienced thought there was enough information that could be covered and be useful.

i know a slang guide would be more of a "SAM forum help" type thing; i was also sort of wondering if there could be enough helpful slang information to prevent people newer to the forum from being lost... but yeah, i see that if they were lost, it wouldn't be to a very big extent - not to mention they probably wouldn't be missing much.

so yeah, a bad idea, but one i thought would at least be worth bringing up.

edit: heh, i just read your signature. good stuff.

It's not a bad idea at all. We've all been through the phase of being totally confused by what the veterans are saying. I'm just waaaaay too lazy to create and maintain another guide. I'm sure you can find a guide of basic internet terminology without looking too hard. The FF terms will come with time, and people will be more than happy to help explain any important ones to you.

Woooo nice thread, just a small note on Drk and Blm for subjob, yeah they are not in anyway a good sub job I agree, however soloing your own skill chains with 2HR and then magic bursting them your self seems like awful fun ^^

hey... I'm a lvl 17 war trying to get the subjob quest done... (dont ask bad pt problems in dunes i have all the items, PL me if you want lol) ok anyways.. i was wondering if some1 could help me understand SAM more. I know about the skillchains and stuff but i just dont understand them. Do you have to do stuff like a ninja does where you have to buy Shihei (is that how you spell it) to use a Utuesimi (i suck at spelling) or do you just use it? Also, do you have to buy scrolls to learn how to do the weaponskills? If someone could send me a {/tell} in game that is a SAM i would really like that. OH! one more question, people have told me that THF is the best subjob for SAM but all they get is Sneak Attack...Right? well im completely confused about playing SAM but some how im definately wanting to play it once i hit 30. Well, thanks for your help in advance and some1 please {/tell} me in the game. :P Thanks!!

Hard to send you a /tell in-game when you don't mention which server you're on. You seem to have alot of simple game mechanics to learn, maybe you can find some starter guides onlin and check those through. (Please don't use the Brady Games Book) That being said, I'll briefly answer what you posed so far.

You do not have to buy scrolls to get Weapon Skills, you will aquire them naturally as your weapon proficiency increases. To increase your skill with any weapon you simply have to use it alot. As a WAR you probably started with a Sword, although I encourage you to pick up a Great Axe as soon as possible since that is the weapon Warrior's are most proficient with. In any case, each type of weapon (dagger, sword, club, axe etc.) has its' own set of different weapon skills. You get your first one when your skill level reaches 10, then usually 30, 70 and so forth. You may have noticed when you were using your sword that you would occasionally get messages in yellow (at least yellow by default) saying "_______ sword skill rises by 0.2 points". Well, when your sword skill reached 10.0, you would have recieved a message like this: "_______'s sword skill rises by 0.1 points. _______'s sword skill rises to level 10. _______ learns Fast Blade!"

I'm not sure if you've checked your Weapon Skill menu, but you might wanna have a look. ^^; You can use your weapon skills whenever your TP meter passes 100. Weapon skills are more powerful at 300 TP usually but it's often not worth the time in gaining that extra 200 TP. Skillchains are much more complicated, but simply put, skillchains happens when two people (or sometimes one if he's fast enough) use specific weapon skills one after the other. (with a few seconds delay in between) Not all weapon skills will make a skillchain when used together, and this is where it gets tricky.

Thief is a great subjob for SAM, but not necessarily "the best". I don't suggest subbing THF until level 60, but definitely under no circumstances sub it before level 30. WAR sub is great, and I suggest going SAM/WAR for now. At least until you've learned a bit more. ^^;
