5 hits, Damage varies with TP. ~500dmg vs peistes inside abyssea, not worth the 10 merits. >:/

None of the new weapon skills are worth having with just 1 upgrade put into it.

Blade:Shun is for those that don't have Blade: Hi. It is better than Jin at 5/5. It's probably on par at 3/5 upgrades and slightly better at 4/5.

edit: No new weapon skill is better than the critical ws from before inside abyssea because none of the new weapon skills can critical unless you force it through some job ability.

As was said earlier, you will need to upgrade the WS to the fullest 5/5 merits in order to see better damage.
As it stands right now, the WS with only 1 merit has only a 20% Modifier (it gets lowered to 17% because the alpha is 0.85). Not only that but the mechanics of the weaponskill give all hits an fTP mod less than 1.0 (it's reported to be around 0.68 to 0.75) which is different from previous WS's because the fTP only applied to the first hit and all hits thereafter were 1.0. Since all hits are less than 1.0, the upside is that this is special and elemental belt/gorget adds 0.10 (each) to all hits of the weaponskill instead of only the first hit.

If you are looking to maximize damage, you will need 5/5 merits (100% Dex mod -> 85% after alpha) and an appropriate Gorget/Belt combo (Flame/Light Gorget and Belt) and you will see damage that is much better and consistent than Jin and right below Blade:Hi outside Abyssea.

I believed you... 100 merits points later, I find out that, inside abyssea anyway, BLADE JIN WINS!!!!! 5/5, I could NOT break 2k. That should give you an idea how much this sucks - with Jin I break 2k every time.

You knew it couldn't crit, right? RR makes any multi-hit WS that can crit beat anything else inside Abyssea.

It's still better outside Abyssea, and since that's where endgame is now, that's a good thing. You'll run out of stuff to do in Abyssea at 99 within a few weeks, and then you'll be happy for the great WS.

100 FREAKIN MERITS

Initially I thought it was a ridiculous amount of merits but remember when we used to get 6 to 8k exp/hr. Now you get over 200k exp/hr. People were completing capping a weapon skill in at the most 5 hours time.

It takes less time to get these weapon skills than it took to do the level 75 quested ws. You had to find a friend to build points to unlock ws or solo 500 pts. Then, you had to fight a NM. Those ws were for some jobs way worse than what they had already.

Yes yes,I knew it couldn't crit. But, for what could have been 1,000,000 exp used for leveling, I was hoping it would at least be equal to Jin somehow. My LS is not yet done with Abyssea so until we move on, I spent all those limit points on something that just looks pretty.

You know, if you guys really want to cheer up those of us with buyer's remorse, please post actual outside-abyssea numbers. I would feel much better if I read stuff like, "on X voidwatch NM jin barely scratched it and damage was all over the place but my 5/5 Blade Shun cut through it doing at least _ times the amount of damage jin did." People keep saying outside it beats Jin, I would love to see actual battle data. And yes, I plan on doing some testing of mine own soon.

If you're expecting a day of EXPing to get you a WS that is several times more powerful than Jin, I think you're going to be disappointed. All the early reports are that it's good but... not THAT good.

What gear are you using for Shun? You need both gorget and belt to make it good, with both of those you will increase the ws's damage by ~30%.

Ok, so the argument is well, it will be better outside of abyssea. But, why oh why do we think it is ok to pay 100 FREAKIN MERITS for a situational WS?!?!?! For that amount of time wasted, that should be everyone's primary WS unless you have Blade: Hi.

Square Enix, I hate you. -.-

This guy below has the right of it

I just ground out lvl 5 on Shun yesterday, and this guy is correct. Since i haven't finalized my WS set yet, i'm only WSing in gorget/blet and byakko's. This WS is very consistent, hitting 2.7k+ very regularly and have seen some good spikes 3.5-4k as well-this is inside Aby.

I've played routinely with guys who have Hi and while i'm positive Shun won't beat it, after i finish my WS set for it i'm sure it will be competive. All in all i think katana made out ok even after SE mucked with Shun some.

normally ws's have an ftp that only applies to the first hit with the rest being 1.0. But with this ws it applies to every hit. Shun's ftp is .6875, on most other ws's to calculate damage with full hits(6 hits includes second hand) you would get 5.6875, aka 5 hits at 1.0ftp, with one at .6875. Where adding gorget and belt would only raise it to 5.875 since they would only affect the first hit. With this ws( and a few others) it applies to all hits and each hit has the same ftp as first hit. So now you get 6*.6875 = 4.125 ftp with landing 6 hits without gorget. Then 6*.8875 = 5.325 ftp with belt and gorget. So as you can see the belt and gorget add a huge percentage to the ftp compared to how many of the other ws's work.

3/5 is under my jin outside aby by just a bit using only light belt.

Landing all hits is crucial so i guess if you fight higher mobs and/or have yonin on better stick with jin, also looks like att have very low impact on ws (berserk up or not).

OK, I've had a chance to play with this outside of abyssea and yes, fortunately it definitely beats Jin there. On a mob where my Jin was hitting only on average 1300 with occasional 1700 spike, I was doing consistently 1900 blade shun with the occasional 2200. I have a belt but now I need a gorget so I know I can make this WS even better.

So just to clarify, if you have a Kannagi there's no reason to get Shun, right? Kannagi is my only empy, so I'm leaning towards meriting Sword, Axe, and Dagger to maximize the number of jobs that have a decent WS.
