Hello everyone!

I posted this in the MNK forums (Copy pasta but with changed names), but I thought since it pertains to NIN as well that I could post it here as well, hope that is okay. If not, I am sorry and just lock and delete it please, thank you.

So, I haven't played FFXI since a few days after the level cap was raised to 80. I've been reading a little here and there, but not really kept myself up to date on how Abyssea works etc, but I guess I know a little.

Anyway, now that I am thinking of reactivating again there are two jobs that I've been having my eye on. The first one is MNK and the second one is NIN. I know this is the NIN forums, so I suppose you might know more about NIN than MNK, but I am wondering what you guys consider to be the pros and cons comparing the two jobs, both inside and outside of Abyssea. I know most don't care about anything outside Abyssea right now, but I am thinking it might make a return sooner or later so I'd be interested to know (even though I know things might change).

Like, how do their roles differ, what are a MNKs strengths compared to the NIN etc. It would be a lot of help and I would really appreciate it, just to get a hint at what I might enjoy more.

Also, if I decide to go NIN (level 37 atm iirc) are there any items you would consider "staple" items that I really should try to get before leveling (Or maybe during leveling)? Any other tips or tricks you could give to an aspiring NIN? :)

I will mostly be hanging around in a trio with a WAR(or thf) and probably a WHM (maybe BLU) what do you think about NIN vs MNK in a situation like that?

Anyway, thank you in advance everyone, hopefully if I decide to go NIN I can do a good job and I am sure your advice will be of great help!

NIN & MNK play very similar roles inside of Abyssea, generally. High DPS evasion-oriented tanks. For group situations, MNK is almost always superior, assuming similar gear. The main reason for this is higher DPS and more HP. When you're being cure-bombed and fighting high-damaging mobs, HP is one of your most important stats. The gap isn't huge though, anything a MNK can do with support a NIN can also do with support.

For solo stuff, NIN is generally superior, due to better evasion, enfeebling magic, and the ability to sub /DNC and not sacrifice shadows. This also makes NIN better in certain duo/trio situations.

I've never really played MNK, but it seems kind of mindless to me: pop counterstance and auto-attack until the thing dies. MNK is superior for certain solo/duo things though strictly due to their powerful 2 hour.

For leveling, don't worry about any "staple" pieces of gear. No one really cares anymore, TBH... Exp is just so fast now. I got DNC from 75 to 90 in like 4 hours last night.

Makes it all that much easier to dual box MNK + WHM!

Okay, thanks guys that really helped. I think I have a better idea of what to choose, personally I've always played mage jobs and like keeping busy so I think I might be leaning a bit towards NIN, but we will see.

Would you say I need to get all abyssea expansions to get to 90 or would getting the last one be enough for that (Will get them all eventually for items etc)? I have the first one, and was hoping I could get away with just getting the last expansion. :)

You can get away with just Visions/Heroes, I think. Most people don't exp in Scars anymore, just an occasional group for farming feet. Sometimes it's difficult to get a Dominion party until ~80-ish though, b/c before 80 you won't contribute much as a melee. If you put "(Fisherman) OK!" in your comment you can probably get in at 70 though.

If you want a really "busy" job, you should consider DNC. That job is like a non-stop macro mash fest. They are in the same boat is NIN and MNK inside Abyssea, and in some ways superior to NIN due to self-cures and Fan Dance.

Hmm, okay... I guess we will see what I do with those expansions. I still haven't gotten my head around how exping in Abyssea really works, but I guess it will get clearer as I enter the areas and see for myself.

I like keeping busy, but I don't have to go nuts hehe. I've always had my eye on MNK and NIN so even though DNC might be superior in some instances I think I will stick to one of these, and like I said most likely NIN. At least first, I have a feeling I might actually give them both a chance since it is always difficult to judge a job without having played it properly at higher levels.

Its ok to say all a mnk does is pop counterstance etc etc, but when it comes to tanking by your anaysis then NIN is just as mindless as MNK, but we both know thats not really the case. Its not as busy as other jobs, but to play it at a HQ standard needs knowledge and experiance, much like NIN does. The downside of both jobs is, once your 75 90 you need all the gear/atma/support to improve your performance / capabilities bit by bit.

Aside from that, both make great tanks in the current game in their own rights. MNK wins in he power/dmg department, NIN wins in the solo department (which is a very nice luxury the more you get into abyss).

NIN/MNK/SAM/COR are my jobs, and I <3 them all equally, so theres no bias in what i've said.
