Is it natural to despise the NIN job having only gotten it to Lv.37? Now with the level cap raised I will have to experience NIN all the way to 50 (for the sake of rounding up), but I'd like to know if Utsu: Ni really makes much of a difference to the enjoyment of the job. I literally dinged 37 3-4 years ago then blew myself up, swearing never to touch the job again. I hated it with a passion; however, my friends all assure me that post 37 the job really does come into its own and I'd like to get your opinions.

I think I disliked it so much, purely because of the ignorance people around me displayed expecting a NIN to take no damage at all with only Utsu: Ichi.

It's only miserable because people insist on making a <37 nin the sole tank.

I hate Ninja 1-37.

When it was 37, i decided to make an extra push and bring it to 40 to do the PCC BCNM.

Once it made to 40... well.... 2 weeks and it was 75.



Ninja is hateable 1-37. After 40 its a completely different job. You start to feel you are actually pulling your own weight.

And shadow tanking as nin/rdm while being by far the best DD in the party is just awesome in the 40s.

Agree, pre-37, NIN is easy to dislike. Then you get Ni, and it gets better, and just keeps getting better as you get higher level. 75, to me, is when it really feels like it all comes together, since you basically can ding into like 10% more Haste n' all.

I recall not caring much for NIN when leveling it to 37 - solo it was fun, but in a group I felt like it was hard to do much. After seeing what a properly supported NIN could do on the trek to 75 (LS static, I was on BRD), I made it the next job I took up...though sadly, I didn't have as good support most of the time (it was the last job I leveled in pickup).

That requires a non-moronic partner.One that is very likely to be leveling a job that he intends to use only as a subjob.

Ok, thanks for this. I guess my next question would be as I am struggling with Gil atm, should I stop at 40 and make the effort to build up a reserve for spinning the wheel 40-50? I am hoping to get to some BC/KSNM's this weekend to finally get some funds as I can't even afford a stack of Shihei bags atm.

Ehhh, not entirely true. It's not -that- expensive to do in the grand scheme of things, particularly if you're not leveling NIN as your first 75. Perhaps more expensive now, since fewer people are buying the tools...but it used to cost maybe a few hundred thousand for a stack of toolbags of each type of tool, and that'd more than cover the level range you'd use them in. 'course, in today's FFXI, where anything more than 50k for gear is expensive, it'd maybe seem a bit steep. Back then, it was the cost of maybe one of your decent pieces of gear.

Given the effectiveness in the particular range...it was pretty much the thing to do. Though now, sure, Colibri mobs are generally resistant, and alternatives abound such as FoV solo/duoing, or even leeching a bit in Abyssea alliances and being on chest duty.

All of this, but negated.

I hated NIN 1-37, and loved it 40+. The elemental wheel is useless before 40 (and after 60). If you like it at 40 you'll probably continue to like it.

However, don't go in with the illusion that NIN is still desirable at 75+, because it isn't. The 2H buff dumped NIN (and THF) into the reject bin for exp, and PLD buffs (and RDMs capping out -interrupt gear) rendered NIN obsolete for endgame tanking, a job which the nerf to hate levels from /drk spells recently finished off. If you love it and you're fine with that, then you can have a great deal of fun with NIN, especially in small groups.

Thank you for all the feedback. Just a couple of points I'd like to reiterate though as someone obviously got the wrong end of the stick:

- I'm only taking NIN to 50 as a Sub; I won't be going any higher and 50 just looks better than 49.
- Ele Wheel is not worth it with the Ichi spells. Everywhere I've looked has said the same thing except for you, Oulanbator, but I'm glad you had fun doing it.
- I had no problems with the job itself getting to 37, I think it was just an illusion that the job was crap until then because ignorance reigned supreme and I was invited to PT's and was expected to take no damage. Just a stigma thing I imagine.

Anyway, I finally got it to 40 (did all 3 levels in FoV Qufim) and I have to say I have enjoyed it. Looking forward to 40+ but would like to know if the AF weapons are worth it? I'm still using Fukuro's lol.

If you are only taking it to 49, dont bother with the AF.

They are good, yes, but it will be much faster if you just buy a couple AH weapons and keep trucking.

I brought several BSTs and PUPs to Abyssea yesterday. We were still kicking ass and taking names (until about half of the original group had to gradually leave; that kinda screwed us up) and I still managed 77 @ empty->80 @ full buffer and a full set of 10 merits.

I feel like I did a good deed!

I remember pre TOAU I got NIN to 60 for fun and back then 51-60 NIN/BLM was the best combination ever, ever. Not only could you tank better than anything else but with HQ ele staves and wheel spam you could dish out 150-180 damage every few seconds and keep hate easily on crabs without /WAR. Of course you need a BRD or RDM for dispel.
