So, as a returning player, I'm loving my monk. Just hit 48 last night and raging fists whoo hooo...

Anyway, being a new player on Bismark, I've been asking around about Monk Builds, since I've heard them mentioned a few times.

I've looked for a guide or something that I can read about these "monk builds". Can anyone give me an overview of what different types of monk builds there are? I know counter is one (I think). I also assume the builds are based on gear make up. Am I right in that assumption?

Honestly, FFXI has so much to do from missions - quests - expansions - addons and so on, I'm not sure where to start.

I was told by my LS that gearing during leveling was a waste of gill (which I have almost none of), and that I should just wait to farm it in endgame. Which is counter-intuitive to me, although I understand why since I went from 38 to 48 in a span of 3 hours in CN last night.

Aside from Monk builds, I really don't have much of an idea of a priority. I know I'll hit 99 some day and get looked over for an event that I didn't know I had to do quests to open up. VW, Abby, Mystic weapons, Empy Weapons. Most of this is on the 'net, which I've read, but still don't know the priority.

Back during CoP, I knew I had to get my missions done for Dynamis, Level Breaks as needed, etc.

Anyway, I'm not complaining, I really like FFXI and all there is to do. But, in the end, I'm driven by gear upgrades. I love them. And I know in the end, that is what will drive me to continue to play.

Thanks
CC

I could be wrong but this forum seems a little slow. I wish I could answer your question, but I'm ignorent when it comes to monk, and was curious myself.

I can't say anything about gear for monk except that it appears that black belt is still a great bit of gear, and that any serious monk will eventually be looking at getting verethenga (spelling might be off here) which is mnk's ultimate weapon at the moment.

As for what to start with, get rank 3 at least in your nation missions ( you'll need an adventurer's certificate to do voidwatch), and make sure you've talked to joachim in port jueno to get your traverser stones (they give you time to be in abyssea), since you're over level 30 now.

Once you're a bit higher you'll need to get into abyssea. The very first thing you should do, IMO is get a megaboss win. This can be had by tagging along with lsmates who are doing it, or by running to where the bosses pop and asking politely for the win (that's how I got most of my wins) your first megaboss win gives you access to a lunar abyssite, which allows you to equip atma.

Atma are the supercharged key items that make you powerful in abyssea. After you have your first lunar/boss win, aim to get a decent atma to equip, like gnarled horn, which drops off of sobek (a mob people farm constantly). I got that atma also by politely asking folks if they could include me.

Another thing to remember is to talk to the voidwatch officers when you are 70 or 75 (can't remember!) to get your voidstones stockpiling as well.

Anyway, in my opinion you're going to need to focus on abyssea first, to get some bits and bobs in terms of gear etc.

Well I still use most of my original af gear for their job ability boosts. Once you get to endgame there are some AH items that you can pick up to start you off. Olo filled you in on the quest starters you'll need. Most gear you will be hunting for comes from abyssea.

Thank you for your response. It helps. I've hit 53 this weekend and have my G1&G2 finished, so I'll be pushing to 60.

However, I'll find out today (Monday) if I'm able to retrieve my old lvl 75 character back from 6 years ago. We'll see.

Thanks again,

There are really only 2 builds you'll need to consider- a TP set and a WS set. The actual pieces those sets consist of will vary based on how active you become, what end-game events you get into, and whether or not you decide to make an empyrean weapon.
  • Entry level: Aurore gear
  • Average level: Empyrean armor +2
  • Top tier: Thaumas armor, various extremely rare Voidwatch armor

A 3rd set that I see a painful amount of monks ignoring now is a Chakra set. AF(+1) body, Relic(+1) hands, and as much VIT as you can get elsewhere. The only thing that really goes into a Counter set is your Relic feet, which you just macro in and out quickly so I don't really consider that a set.

I missed this thread, so my apologies.

You'll want to get your AF most definitely. Also, please get a Brown Belt ASAP. Everything else is just dressing after that. Like Prim said, you can just sure Aurore gear. It's not the best but it will do.

Like I said, get a Brown Belt.

Any time. It's good to see new Monks again. Hopefully we can get this to be a more active subforum again!
