I'm probably going to be posting in this forum quite a lot for questions about new gear. So, I figured I'd make a thread and that way returning nubs can see this and go "Oh hey, I'll ask my question there".


So, yes. I got a Ganesha's Mask drop today. Is this worth using over Walmart Turban? My gut tells me yes, except perhaps in high haste situations. Which don't exist any more. Apparently.

So yeah, if there's a thread about this already my bad, but I'm sleepy.

I had a feeling that was the case. I'm not touching Monk until I get my Black Belt finished. It's been on hold for too damned long!

I shall put the mask on mothballs until I can get myself a NeoNyzul static.

For the most part, that's an okay set at starting out, and you can keep using that till you can start replacing pieces with Empyrean +1/2. Besides that, you'll want equipment such as Rancor Collar (you'll want to cap your Tonberry hate to maximize the usefulness of this), Epona's Ring, Atheling Mantle, Ghillie Earring +1, Thew Bomblet, etc.

As for weapons, unless you decide to take the time to make some form of Magian weapon, your weapon progression should look something like this.

Destroyers -> Heafon Knuckles (85) -> Taurine Cesti (89) -> Brawny Adargas (99)

There are some interim/alternative ones you might come across, such as Metasoma Katars at 88, that you might find easier/more useful for you, and there are some other non-Magian ones at the end alongside the Brawny Adargas that are better, such as the Girru, but the progression of those four are a decent direction you wanna go with your weapon upgrades.

From what I recall, the only way that Faith Torque comes out ahead of Rancor is with full h2h merits and the new Bruiser's Earring with it. Without those merits, it'll fall behind enough to where Rancor Collar + Ghillie Earring +1 is better.

At 99 with full merits, Tantra+2, BB, Epona, Rajas, and Brutal, I'm finding Rancor constantly 3 dps ahead of Faith with either earring, little more in Abyssea or fodder. Faith+Bruiser will always raise base DMG by 1. Bruiser's and Ghillie's are on par with each other, either neck equipped, with Ghillie's ahead by less than 1 DPS. Maybe someone else can cook Kine's xls different.

Still, I like Faith for it's lack of Damage Taken +10%, considering when I'm on MNK, I'm usually tanking, a majority of which is blood tanking. I use Rancor for Victory Smite since it's better than Gorget on all but the hardest NMs outside Abyssea.

You'll really want to play around with Kine's spreadsheet, as this will depend a bit on your particular setup, in/out of Abyssea with atma, mob (easy stuff like Dyna farming, harder things like a VW mob, etc).

In general though, the best TP earring/neck combo these days is Brutal/Moonshade (Regain augment) on the ears, and some non-Faith neck (Rancor, Agasaya, Calcitrant, Tantra). Faith is still acceptable, but generally falls behind a bit these days.

As for earrings, even without Moonshade, I think that in most situations for MNK, Ghillie/+1 (or even Aesir) win out over Bruiser's, plus they don't have the kinda icky Subtle Blow -10.

I just resubbed myself, although it hasnt been quite as long for me. Used to frequent this forum and its good to see people coming back! Anyway im going to do the 99uncap fight with ls tonight, super stoked to get shijin spiral and start upgrading a couple gear slots that could use tweaking. I never thought one of my issues with monk would be having too much gear haste lol

Yeah. Im sitting at 27 atm, and thats with tantra gloves still at +1 lol. on another note, i uncapped to 99 and got shijin spiral! Now to spend the rest of the month maxing its merits. 15 merits per point. F u.

Ok realistically thats like only 5 hours work. But still!

Edit: its not 15 per point. Its 15 for the first point. Then 20. Then 25, 30. Lol. Almost there.

Hope you don't mind me expanding your thread a bit Nilatai, you've been really helpful with other MNK queries i've had mate.

I'm doing the push from 55-75 on MNK at the moment and as i've mentioned befoer it's the first melee job i've ever done properly and i've only just came back, so the power leveling of GoV means gear is being outdated quickly.

At the moment i'm sitting with pretty much lvl 30 gear (Merc Captain Set) and level 32 weapon (cant remember the name of them at this point) . Once I get to 60 i'm going to do a full AF run and replace what I can with it, but then i'll be picking up some AH stuff I guess.

Can anyone recommend what i should be picking up to take on with me to 75 before entering Abyssea or what's required for 70 Matt fight?

Looks like a potential upgrade to me.

Definitely an upgrade, at least in aby.

Yeah i wouldnt like, go out of your way for one. Tantra cyclas +2 is pretty beast. And theres always lokis kaftan, which is an easy fight. I had horrible luck on the droprate, so i just went right to tantra.

I looks sooooo great with the pink boots though.
