So now that the level cap is 95, is there any point in stopping XP'ing to get the good level 75 gear?
Or does it make more sense to just grab 75-95 'cheap' gear you can buy on AH, get to cap and then spend your time getting good gear (IE: rare/ex) that's level 95 (empryean armor?)?

skipping over AF and Relic?

I wouldn't skip over AF and relic some of the armor provide bonuses to Counterstance, Boost, and Chakra. Other than that Walhara Turban(sp) is best hat you can wear until af3+1 crown and with byakko pants rest can be aurore until respective af3+1 except for feet in which fumas is better if you want to cap haste later with +2s with brown belt.

right, i know that stuff is the best, but what im getting at is it necessary to have for XP parties to 95 and in order to get the af3+1 gear?

Or can you just rock out cheap gear to get the best gear in order to save time.

I'm just going pink gear until I can replace it with af3+1 (well, I'm using the turban, but only because I already had it). Monk has extremely easy to obtain af3+1, so I really don't see a good reason to stop and farm. The only thing I have picked up is my Knuckles of Trials :D

The Aurore Doublet Set. You can buy all five pieces from the Cruor Prospector in any of La Thiene, Konschtat, and Tahrongi abyssea areas. They also have the maps and some abyssite to buy.

You'll want to also talk to the Atma Fabricator and see if you can get any more atma. Then hit a fabricator in a scars and heroes zone each, they all offer different atma.

Honestly dont even bother with byakko or walmart turban.

Wear full pink
go 75-95
Then bust out the ridiculously easy af3+1
get some of the good atma
get the af3+2 gear
profit

75-95 will take like 4-5 hours depending on the group and no one will care that you are wearing pink gear at this point in the game.

Yes you should do some of the af1 gear for its macro purposes, and get the relic feet eventually, but none of that is NEEDED to go to 95. All you need is caped melee skill for 75, full pink +brown belt is plenty good.

I may as well jump on this thread rather than start a new one.

I stopped playing around May '10, at the time my gearset was this: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/112307

Barring Black Belt which I aim to get immediately or soon after I return, before I start levelling again, this set should get me to 95, right?

Thanks.

Yea that will work to get you to 95, but you will probably want the Aurore Doublet Set at 78.

Eh, Walahra/Byakko/Fuma are better than Aurore and he already has em. Maybe want to pick up Aurore hands/body, but can safely pass on the rest of the set. For people without that stuff, Aurore is perfectly fine to hold you over. If you don't have Walahra already, don't waste your money (or ISP/coins which you can turn into money) on it when it's going to be useless once you get AF3+1.

For Nilatai, really the most important gear upgrade is weapon. Destroyers don't cut it any more. In the absence of a relic/mythic/empy, go for fire path Taipan Fangs +3. Taurine Cesti are a single NM drop that's a relatively easy to obtain placeholder weapon (was one of the top non-Relic/Empy options at lv90). Augmented Savate Fists (2500 Dominion notes, in [A]Ule. Range) with DMG/crit augments are a decent and very easy to obtain lower end placeholder.

Some items other than Aurore set that are quick AH upgrades from 75-cap gear: Thew Bomblet, Kemas Earring, Heed or Keen Ring (pair with Rajas for TP until Rajas/Epona), Spiral Ring (excellent WS ring), Vellaunus' Mantle (good until Atheling).

AF/AF+1 items that remain useful:
Feet (Dodge macro), Body (Chakra macro), Head (Focus macro), Hands (Boost macro)

Relic items that remain useful:
Feet (Counterstance macro), Hands (Chakra macro), Body (Idle regen), Cape (Chakra macro)

Other 75-cap stuff that's still good at 95:
Black Belt (duh)
Brown Belt (still 2nd place)
Faith Torque
Brutal Earring
Rajas Ring
Aesir Earring
Sea gorgets (WS)
Genbu's Kabuto (Ascetic's Fury, Chakra)
Anwig Salade (WS)

So upgrade weapon and belt asap is what you're saying, then focus on getting the level 95 stuff? I have most of the other stuff you said is good, Anza, with the exception of Aesir Earring. I never got around to doing Einherjar, which is a shame. The moogle mini-expansion is the only one of the three I actually bothered to buy before I quit so Anwig Salade would be doable.

I had a look at that pink stuff before I posted and it didn't look any better than what I currently have. Perhaps the gloves, I suppose. What with the 2% haste probably being better than Bandomusha Kote.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

There are a lot of weapon options. If you aren't going relic/mythic/empy, an excellent choice is the str/att fire magian weapons. You can pick up the Tauren Cesti to keep you running until you get those done.

However, if you also do puppetmaster, you'll eventually want to get the pet: magic attack bonus claws. These can be done in roughly 10 hours of playtime, depending. So, these make an excellent holdover weapon until you can make the str/att claws. 32 dmg/61 delay is nothing to snear at.

Crit weaponskills are king in abyssea, Acestic's Fury is great I'm told (I still need to get nyzul done myself, so I'm going on what I'm told here).

Lastly, it's important to get staff high enough to have Cataclysm, and you need to unlock the Retribution ws as well. Similarily, you need to get all the weapon skills for club. You'll eventually probably want to cap staff skill, but hold off on that until you unlock the ws's on both weapons.

I would also suggest replacing the Tiphia Sting with a Thew Bomblet. It's under 20k. Similarily, when you get to level 86 swap out the Sniper's Ring for a Keen Ring. With the Atma of the Razed Ruins you don't need much acc in abyssea.

I capped my staff skill a long time ago out of boredom. Plus I has a Primate Staff +1 made for me by a friend which was pretty much the best DD staff going for a long while.

If I get enough time I will be going for the Magian h2h, I'm sure my friends won't mind helping me out.

Again, thanks for the advice. I can't believe how cheap old high end gear is now! Crazy.

You're going to hate me for this... but unless you're keeping it for giggles, that's not a great staff anymore....

For Cataclysm (read: brew and aoe farming), ideally you would have a Pluto's Staff. Check out the cataclysm thread on the front page, people answered my questions about this.

For staggering blue, you can use whatever staff. Might as well just reuse the Pluto's Staff. Technically the Primate +1 is better, but you'll be stuck with Pamama, instead of whatever food you would use.

All joking and suprises aside: Welcome back.

Yeah, weapon ASAP, as well as working on Tantra+1 set. Eventually Tantra +2, and the other good single pieces (Atheling Mantle is one that comes to mind as a great one to get right away).

Belt just get when you can do it, but it's obviously an awesome upgrade any time you can move to Black Belt. No shame in continuing to use Brown Belt though as you work away.

Even more important than gear, make sure you get the good atma from defeating Abyssea NMs, which will be a bigger difference when equipping them in Abyssea than any piece of gear. There are three Abyssite key items that allow you to equip one Atma for each - you get one from your first Abyssea zone boss win, one from spending 100,000 Cruor to buy from NPC, and the last from your 7th Abyssea zone boss win. Get the first two right away as a big time priority - you can build up cruor fast while in an exp alliance in Abyssea.

For Atma:
* Razed Ruins and Gnarled Horn are musts. Beg for help for these as soon as you can!
* Voracious Violet and Sanguine Scythe are also very good.
* Apocalypse is great, but will take you longer as it comes from the boss of Abyssea bosses (Shinryu). A common setup for MNKs is RR/GH/Apoc, it's my default set.
* Stout Arm is a solid placeholder that's fairly easy to get (and comes from a zone boss you'll need to kill anyway). * You probably have Proto-Omega title from Limbus, and with that you can spend a small amount of cruor to buy another solid DD atma (Alpha & Omega) from the synthesis NPCs in Abyssea, to hold you over.

Aesir Earring actually doesn't require Einherjar! It does require having the ToAU missions complete, but once you have that it's just a short quest to get the temporary key item needed to enter the Odin BCNM-style battle. Aesir Earring is one of the possible rewards you can choose after winning - it's like the prime avatar reward system, so no need to worry about drops either. With a few friends you can easily knock it out in a couple hours.

There are other good earrings, but Aesir is definitely a solid option and not that hard to score. Lots of 95 MNKs TP in it. I prefer Moonshade Earring (WotG final reward, choose regain and either Acc or Atk augments) for TP. Tantra and Bruiser earrings are also solid choices. Brutal remains stapled to your ear (except for Asuran) just like always.

Two good points - Ascetic's is indeed your go-to WS in Abyssea unless you get Victory Smite from the Empyrean weapon.

Staff/Club come into play when triggering weaknesses with the relevant WS. I'm often using a staff to get red or blue weaknesses triggered, then switch back to H2H to kill stuff. Look up "weakness targeting" on wiki for a good summary. (I have managed to still slack off on breaking my trial club since I'm always with others who have Black Halo... Need to finish that up one day.)

Anyway, welcome back to a long time MNK. Enjoy the crazy differences XD

Thanks guys! I'll get back to fixing up the stickies when I'm back proper. Hopefully I'll get back into my stride and will be able to get back to dishing out advice instead of asking for it! Smiley: thumbsup

Have some green arrow for your trouble!

As an aside I'll probably keep the P.Staff+1 for shits 'n' giggles. I'll see about getting my friend to craft me a Pluto's, if he still plays!

I don't usually take a job into abyssea until 75. You technically can go in at 30, but you will be useless (unless you are Key person, and seeing you have not been in yet, you won't be). Crour is like CP, you get a small amount each kill. You can also join a crour party, that is usually the best way to gain it faster then a normal Abyssea party.

You should definitely do the short CS/quests to enter Abyssea immediately though - once you do, you will start accumulating "stones", the key items that allow you time in Abyssea. They build up at a rate starting at one stone every 20 real life hours (can be reduced by getting Abyssites later), and initially grant you 30 minutes inside Abyssea per each stone. Go ahead and get that done so you're getting stones as you are working on your jobs outside of Abyssea.
