The other day, I finally did something I've been meaning to do for a while: I fought and defeated Shadow Lord solo, without using any meds. I've wanted to do that for a long time, as it was on my mental list of "Things to do on MNK before SE discontinues FFXI." I took video of the entire fight, which I'll have up soon enough. I subbed /NIN, which is kind of silly, but I didn't bother casting Utsusemi anymore after a while (for obvious reasons). It was a lot of fun.

Next is "Pulling the Plug!"

shame the people who cap guard never bother finding out a more realistic rate. congrats on the blue number though, i hope it doesn't trick you into equipping +guard gear vs anything that matters.

I'm not really good with testing and can't give an exact number, but I'll simply put it this way. The procs are noticeable. They are more noticeable when solo'ing on /dnc, during ballitsa, and during lower floors of salvage, where you don't have a subjob. Once you equate /nin into it, for me, it becomes a little less noticeable, because it has to go through my shadows first, and then my counterstance before it even has the chance to guard, though still much more noticeable than before I level'd guard.

Another accomplishment of mine, would be this
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i226/lilT20o0/ffxi_20080715_110530.png

From now on, I'll sit out of the fuma vs dune boots discussions.

Edit:

While I do macro some guard into my Ichi macro, I don't replace anything thats worthwhile. For example, I swap out my amemet+1 for my boxer's mantle, and I swap in my Temple hose+1 (has counter as well), but only for the first 3 seconds, swapping back in Byakko's to get the haste at the time of the cast. I also do this with melee gaiters and fuma (which are now on my mannequin because of the screen above, so we can say usukane now)

Thank you and grats on your kote. I will have to take the time one of these days and test this for you guys (any suggestions on how I would go about doing this would also be appriciated). I don't have details for now, especially not aside from skilling, but I can tell you that in my full guard build, it procs really well. I would even get high proc rates on things such as T sea puks (which is actually what I ended up capping it on).

Also, I wanted to comment, Guard is by far the hardest thing I've skilled. That being said, its no where near as bad as I've heard everyone else make it out to be. If you're sitting in the 120-150 range, try this. Get a rdm for phal II, a brd for ballad, and 1 more back up healer. Get phy dmg down, gaurd+ and high defense gear and eat a taco. Go to the tree and get all your buffs up, you will take 0-10 dmg from the mandies there. You should start with 10-15 and be able to manage up to 30ish. An hour or 2 of that and your guard should go up considerably.

My LS did a few KS99s the other night, and I obtained both my Adamantoise Egg and my Behemoth Tongue. :D

Doing some Early Birds Tuesday after next, so my fingers are crossed...

...we won't go into the discussion of what level my monk is as of the time of posting, but I'm leveling it as fast as I can!

veggeto,

the easiest test you could do for a start would be to find some midlevel mob that won't kill you (MNK/DNC could help this too) and that you won't counter to death or evade every hit, probably a mandy, and just sit and record as best you can how many guards you get over the course of a few hundred/thousand hits. it's a tedious thing to do, but it would give us a good idea of what guard rate looks like when guard is capped.

i'm not sure how useful this information will be. proving that guard rate "gets capped in relation to the mob" would be useful; ie proving that such and such skill is capped vs a lv50 mob but gives minimal guard rate vs a lv90 mob (we all assume this from our personal experience, but it would be nice to figure out just what the formula is). that would be very difficult to test, but you should probably be able to get a rough estimate (within 5% i'd think) from just letting a mob tool on you.

i'd understand if you don't do it, since it would be purely altruistic. but it would be nice to at least have a number for "capped guard rate" that we could throw out.

also, a) that screenshot is hilarious, and b) congrats on the new boots.

oh, and regarding the utsusemi swaps, those make sense to me (i don't know if they make a difference... and i sooooort of think you'd be better off swapping on evasion since guard procs can still interrupt casting). what i was talking about was, say, putting on all the guard gear genome mentioned when you have hate in merits or are tanking a chariot or something, which would be stupid (and is a big reason why genome's vague comments on guard are stupid).

For solo'ing, I do swap in eva in place of guard, but when I'm doing something like LBC, it rarely ever misses me. Those swaps in particular was from my salvage macro set (I have a macro set for everything, lol).

As for guard, I was going to agree to give it a shot, but I just checked the statistics on my parser and it has evade %, but not the numbers of hits and misses and honestly, I'll straight up lose count. I could count the number of guards easy enough, but having to simultaneously count the number of hits and misses at the same time, when going for a large number, is something I really don't want to deal with. Does anyone recommend a different parser that may remedy this situation?

i guess the best way to do it would be to actually write into the parser a filter that catches dmg below and above a certain number. i can't do it personally, and it wouldn't be 100% accurate anyway...

it's long been a tough question "how to find guard rate w/o 'paper parsing'?"

this idea may be crazy, but we could do this: vegetto do the above "test" i mentioned (let a mob hit you for a few hundred to a thousand hits), filter mob misses, and SS every hit. post the SSs on photobucket or something, and some other helpful poster go through and count all the "so low it was probably a guard" hits, so veggeto doesn't have to do ALL the tedious work.

i can't say that i'm willing to do the counting, but it is a cooperative way to do this without 1 person having to sit and count everything. it also may be too big a pain for veggeto as well. (shrug)
