While it's interesting to play around with, it really wouldn't be all that great at the same time because what you have access to job ability wise prevents you from using your automaton very well. You can't equip Automaton Oils for Repair (so damage to the Automaton would require it to heal itself), you don't have access to items needed to reduce Overload frequency, so Overloads may be frequent, and, though I'm not 100% on this, so this last one might be incorrect, your Automaton is going to be capped at Subjob level only.
While early on level wise this will still prove useful (since your Automaton will have access to cures, and the level difference won't be huge), later on the Automaton will pale in comparison to what you can gain from other support jobs. Subbing Ninja gives you reliable shadows and will give you Dual Wield II/III sooner than you'd gain it natively. Subbing Dancer gives you an Accuracy Bonus, Steps, Waltzes, Jigs, and Sambas, that improve various aspects of your Thief's abilities. Lastly, Warrior offers you Attack bonuses, a potent Double Attack, Bergressor, Warcry, and Provoke, making it far better for pure offensive situations.
