Hey all,

I'm trying to pick between THF, DNC, and NIN for my next job, and endgame soloing is important to me. I realize that this means thf/nin, so you lose the curative and erasing abilities of dancer. How well does thf solo (exp and nm's) compared to the other two? Is THF's godly evasion so great that even the old **** bolts are still enough to keep it running?

Thanks.

I main both THF and DNC and to be honest...there's no way I could chose one over the other. If you're strictly talking about soloing I usually use the following rule of thumb: If the NM has any type of magical AOE or has a highly damaging move that goes through shadows or can't be evaded...I go with DNC. Everything else is THF. Of course there are other factors involved as well such as the need for TH (THF of course) or do I want to walk up to the biggest, meanest NM I can find and test my solo abilities (DNC).

From an evasion standpoint there's no contest, THF is king. I've tanked just about every single NM in abyssea on both THF and DNC (with **** good support I might add) and even if the numbers look close, THF evades much much more than DNC ever could. The only times I ever find myself choosing DNC to tank over THF are those rare occasions where I need fan dance to survive.

Soloing general mobs is a different story though, DNC has a lot of utility in the survival department as well as a lot of toys to make killing faster. Usually when I go AE spamming for gold chests I use DNC.

So it really just comes down to a matter of preference. If you're choosing either job for more than just solo play (lowmanning abyssea groups) I would have to give the "usefulness" advantage to THF. Tanking, hate control, and TH are very essential tools to have in a low man setting. Not to say DNC is useless, but usually you have mages to take it's place.

Oh, and can't really comment on NIN since I don't have it leveled, but I would imagine it would be a decently balanced job. Good damage, decent tank, enfeebles come in handy, and you have a decent assortment of yellow/red/blue procs for abyssea. If I had to choose between THF and NIN I would probably still choose THF.

Dnc is hands down the better solo job between it and thf. It may be the best solo job in the game, period. I don't have experience with nin but nin/dnc is also very good.

But, because it's so easy to level these days and because thf and dnc can use so much of the same equipment, why not do both?

I don't have a single dagger on THF that I could use if I leveled DNC...

But almost every other thf does. Assuming someone doesn't is inane.

Yeah, it's just a complaint I have. Mandau, Triplus and Rapidus are the daggers I have for my THF and none are DNC usable, heh.

Magian daggers are all THF / BRD / DNC. That's 3 of my 5 jobs (gogo battle bard)!

And LoH, when you get that Twashtar your sig says you are working on, you too will have a dagger you can also use on Dnc.

Yeah well, that's not happening anytime soon. Unless I win the lottery and can enslave Badian to do my bidding sometime in the near future.

This is kind of the conclusion I'm coming to. I was prepared to solo grind dancer (it is the one I settled on) up to 90 and call it good, but then I discovered the wonder that is GoV. That wasn't around before I took my most recent break. I figure I'll get dnc to 90, crank out two evasion magian daggers, and then decide if I want to race thief up the same exact way.

I don't ever seem to have to use a curing move in GoV, so thf/nin and dnc/nin probably level the same. thf might even be easier with the better evasion and access to a bravo's subligar for a bit more haste. And I would say I'm making 20-30k exp/hr in GoV anyways.

Besides, it's thief. Evasion is the god stat of ffxi, and looting everything in sight is fun. And no matter what changes SE brings on us in the future, treasure hunter will always have a place in every ls. Very few jobs are not one change away from uselessness. I'd hate to be a pld right now.

Edit: SE will save Paladin. SE has an intense, undying love for Paladin. They just haven't done it yet.
