Tanked Charybdis for the first time ever, which was probably the most fun I've ever had in FFXI. Also, I bought my Peacock Charm and Fire Bomblet today, which nearly caps me on AH gear.

I'm two merits away from capping category 1 and 2 merits for THF, also.

February 15, 2009 I got homam Manopolas.

I really wanted either legs or feet because the hands doesn't boost my haste but I am happy to be 3/5 and looking to finish my homam set this year. Hopefully by summer.

Parry 205. Farming never stops. Once you have everything you think you want, you realise that white-boxing it would be nice. Or that maybe going for a relic isn't such a bad idea after all.

On which note: assassin's bonnet, relic dagger, and half the currency needed to upgrade it. Once I do the first upgrade I can sponsor dyna runs, which will make life much easier. Especially as I'll be the sucker pulling them :D

I capped Thief merits last night, as well as gained 2.2 parrying in a single (extremely long) solo farming run. Now I'm working on the "Others" category: Spell Interruption Rate 1/4.

Takes the spot of rogue's culottes, dragon subligar, and crow hose. I know it's not as good as any of those other pieces, but I'm on a major inventory issue with THF, usually 67/70 on THF gear with meds and such, 69/70 with foods D:

Well It's about that time again. You guys know me by now, my luck is weird. I usually have a lot of things happen at once, then nothing big happens for a while. All my good stuff clumps together it seems, so with that said I'll roll off my accomplishments.

1:) First order of business. I got my Homam Gambieras today!! (I also learned how to crop pictures together so I don't need 3 links for the same screenie >.>)

2:) Second up. I'm finally gonna go hammer out Apocalypse nigh tomorrow (I know, I've put that off quite a while).

3:) Thirdly, I got accepted into a salvage linkshell three weeks ago. I've run enough with them my trial is over, so I have full lotting rights now. Skadi's stuff will still be slow, but I'll get it eventually.

4:) Tonight I just got accepted into an Einherjar linkshell, so eventually I'll finally have N legs and delta earring (all right). I'm going to be leveling my ranger to help with Odin as a side, but it'll be worth it. My ranger is now level 58, I have my O-Bow in mog, and just grabbed an E-Bow. Needs moar shootin stuff, hehe.

That's most of the biggies, the rest is just crafting and miscellaneous things, but nothing as noteworthy as these.

Busy kitty keeps occupied =^..^=

Well as per my post last night I went and ran Apocalypse Nigh today. I %$#@! LOVE the Empyrial Paradox, I wish I could merit in there. The scenery, the music, the aura, WOW. What a zone!! That said, we intended to go with 6. I had 4 people set to static it from Monday, but it didn't happen so simple. One person never beat ZM 16, so he was out. We did a pickup shout and grabbed 3 people and headed out only to find one in Zi'Tah. He thought we were doing Divine Might and didn't know Arc Angels and Apocalypse Nigh were not the same thing (I hate pickup shouts).

By now we were at the Empyrial paradox so we said ^%$#@ it and entered anyway with a battle strategy in mind. I run in aggro both, pop perfect dodge and kite with striders after it wears. Elda'narche got a few nukes off and ended up taking me out but after a reraise we felled him. Kam'lanaut was running around beating on people. I died and reraised again. At this point we decided to just wipe and let Kam'lanaut reset and rest to full (two others were weakened by now as well, double weakness on another besides myself). Afterwards we got up and proceeded to zerg the living **** outta him. That was fun!!

Clear time-- 21 minutes XXX seconds. Divine might is done. Now to go get my Hollow earring. I'm thinking I'll swap it into TA + dancing edge alongside my brutal earring, and on Sneak attack + dancing edge use hollow + pixie earring. I'll see about shark bite and etc, and since suppa doesn't work as /war I'll wear that next to brutal for tp then. Either way, between today, last night, and the past three weeks... really good stuff all abound.

To be honest, I picked up Hollow Earring and it was a mistake in the long run. It's nice but it's not big enough of a difference over other earrings to make it better than etheral as Thief. Especially if you like to tank, etheral is simply golden, and I'll be trading mine out the first chance I get. (It's a bit of a pain but could be worse)

Meh, I can't see myself ever using ethereal. Attack+5 Evasion+5.. I'd rather keep using brutal/suppa, and I'll take +4acc on an earing over attack+5 when not /nin. Plus it's better than anything for DEanything.

Yupyup, what deadgye said.

Ethereal Earring to me is a bunch of stats that have different purposes, but nothing specialzed. The 5 attack is trumped by Merman's, and I have no use for that. The 5 evasion is equaled by elusive. The 3% hp --> MP is just 3% damage down like a miniature D ring since I have no mana, but much less potent. The 15 HP means little to me. Yeah, the ethereal earring is a tanking earring, no doubt about it. But when I tank or solo I'm not in need of its stas that much, and I solo and tank just fine as is. I can't foresee it being of much use to me, maybe others can but not me.

Hollow earring now.. This baby was MADE for the thief. 2 dexterity + 3 accuracy and 3 ranged accuracy (heck it's even useful for my ranger I'm leveling >.>). The 2 dex equates to 1 accuracy, so it adds 4 accuracy or 2% accuracy, and makes it the strongest earring we get for dancing edge alongside one of the other big name pieces. 2 dex is still 0.498 WSC on every hit, so it can add extra damage if a tier is broken even in TA DE. In SA DE it directly mods the first hit critical plus a potential WSC tier, and of course accuracy.

Being a meat eater the choice was obvious. The only consideration was what to wear alongside it in ws. I'll be brutal/suppa for tp, and since it's a ws ear I chose pixie for sa de because 3 dex on first hit crit (and it does break a wsc for me) was greater than the brutal. The brutal adds averaged one extra swing every 10 weaponskills (main and offhand get 5%, so that's 1 swing in 10) and these are subject to current acc and can miss too. Adding 2% accuracy plus first hit crit plus an extra damage every swing is more worthwhile for me. Since TA has no dex mod... brutal is the obvious choice here.

Side note: if I'm /war this sucker is the best TP earring to wear alongside the brutal as well, so even there it's a win!!

<3 <3 my earring already.

I traded my hollow for etheral because I leveled PLD to 75. Figured I'd get more use out of it on PLD. I also use it on THF when I sub WAR, since suppa is useless. I'd like a Delta Earring, but I don't do Einherjar anymore and I'm like 1000(or less...) ichor away. >.>

Congrats on the Enkidu's Leggings. I just recently obtained Enkidu's Subligar, though I am not sure if they're better than Dusk for SADE. I want to say yes. (I'm thinking situational, if someone can give me an answer on that, that'd be cool.)

Yup, Stilvan nailed it on the head. All the rewards are nice, but depend on what job you want them for most. Ethereal is not a bad earring (it's very nice) but more situated to tanking. If you prefer to play paladin then that's the right answer. If you're a mage at heart then you'd probably go magnetic, unless you're a black mage then you would probably want Static (maybe even a red mage too). Rajas, Tamas, and Saatva fall into this category, as do DM earrings. It really depends on what job you want to use it most on. I wasn't knocking ethereal, but I love my thief most so it's the best answer for me. Other people with other jobs will have varying mileage (as they should).

I still say Etheral. The difference between Svatta and Etheral as tanking pieces is that Rajas is too important to even consider using svatta instead. Hollow doesn't have that glory over Etheral. Etheral is designed beautifually as a tanking earring on Thief. It enhances our damage, our evasion, and reduces our damage taken. And if you're using a subjob that uses MP (I love playing around as THF/PLD) then you get a refresh to boot depending on how much damage you're taking.

Yes, Hollow stats are nice, but they aren't game breaking for that slot. It's not going to change your performance over Brutal+Pixie, or brutal+merman's, or brutal+accurate much at all TPing. And that's only for a situational sub job. It's almost never better for /nin. And for WS, Brutal+Pixies is always A+. Unless you're ACing (big deal).

Etheral over any other Earring in the game for tanking purposes will be huge. Even on Thief.

And I look at Thief as more than just a hate clamp DD, because it should be. I prefer to tank whenever I can.

I also picked Hollow, although at the time it was more because I thought my secondary job would be COR. Afterwards I ended up dropping COR and picking up DRG, but still stand by my choice. If I solo'd more on DRG (or even went as /mage more) I would contemplate switching. But the extra DEX and ACC (and r.acc) is just beautiful on THF.

Everything is situational I guess, but for my current gaming habits, Hollow will beat out Ethereal hands down for use.

Pixie is only better than hollow for SAsolo. Hollow > Pixie for DEanything, and possibly shark bite anything as well.

Quote:
Yes, Hollow stats are nice, but they aren't game breaking for that slot.

The same could be said for Ethereal, both earrings are nice it just comes down to what you want to use them for. Since I'm pure thf and always use attack food ethereal just wasn't for me. :p

I didn't say pixie was better, I merely said it's not going to change your performance much at all. Because it doesn't. And saying Hollow > Pixie for SADE, TADE, or TA, is dependant on a LOT of things. That 2% accuracy you're gaining is only going to boost 2% of the non-stacked swings, or 1/50 more hits landed. Big whoop. 1 Dex is applied to all of the swings you land before you reach that 1/50, AND the swings that are stacked. Also, is feint up? Go ahead and take away that 1/50 it has if so, because then it's absolutely worthless.

Sirocco Kukri!

Aight Melph, it was your post about dagger comparisons between X's Knife vs. Sirocco Kukri that inspired me to hunt after this weapon again. I stopped trying after I landed my X's, but you've piqued my interest and know I will really be able to see which performs better in which situations myself. I'll post my findings on it in that other thread once I collect some parse data.

I love my X's, I've seen some impressive numbers and parses come from it. But what I'm more interested in is playing the absolute best THF I can play, and that means being objective and being willing to leave it in its sheath if that's what it comes to. Thanks for motivating me, and I'll let you know what I find.

Had my 10 Phaubo and 5 Hphmede organs already, so Breeze Gorget mine!

...
or not, seems yellow is not the new green, so I have to farm myself up some organs for a Soil Gorget. Xzomit 10/10 and Aern 4/5 currently.

Was planning to do Breeze for THF and NIN, and Flame for DRG... but looks like I have to do the flame much later Smiley: cry

Well theres good news and bad news....

Skadi's Visor O! 1st piece of salvage gear w00t! Now if my skadi body 35 will **** warping gears and wind weather -_-

And got screwed outta Heca cap Abj last odin due to some confusion. Everyone so focused on the Ebody and Wbody that Nhead kinda slipped between the cracks and the lotting procedure got messed up -_-

In other news, I am updating my Racc set and am pleased so far with the results. Ive even been tempted to level Rng myself once i get skadi body.

/late, but on the earring issue, I am VERY happy with my delta earring. 2dex/chr is pretty pimp for DE as the chr mod is so terribly underrated (not that you should gear for it, but if its free on other gear....40% is still VERY high for multi hit WS.) Id have to run some numbers, but my gut says it is probably on par for DE with hollow (dependant on hitting a WSC tier)

But its rather irrelivant to me because Ethereal [impossible to gauge] on Drg/mage and im not giving up my chain 5 zero downtime Greater colibri solo for +3 damage avg on DE.

Ever since turning over a new leaf on my thf:

Went on a modest shopping spree to revamp my thf gears and food (squid sushi) for xp purposes. Nothing fancy, but a little more party appropriate (and a whole set dedicated to SA woohoo). Now just to solo to 55(4k tnl) so I have decent attack earrings and back to wear (spike+royal army).

Raised my Marksmanship from 1 to 160 over the weekend and bought me some x-bow(thug z.) and status bolts. Is sleep+acid enuff for pt xp?

3 straight nights of solo farming in the temple of Ug before pop item (bee larvae) dropped for the Hornetneedle NM. Pop item drop was a serious pain in the tuckus. Stacks of chips, honeys, and wings to show for it before finally dropped. DW corsair + HN @54 gogo. (viking shield as back up if not /nin)

I admit its nothing too impressive in the grand scheme of things, but its more of a reflection to get more enjoyment out of this job.

I like bringing Bloodies wherever I go. They can help a lot in a pinch, and cut down on MP so that the mage can focus on one less person when a long or tough fight is getting tight.

And I always keep at least 1 stack of blinds on hand. I typically won't use them in EXP unless I'm pulling something that runs fast and I'm not subbing ninja, but I don't remember the last time I had to do that. You never know though, in or out of EXP, they can save your **** when you least expect it.

As for gear, you seem to be on good track. Peti is a good choice at level 55, and there are nice crossbows to look into. (You miss out on 1 AGI, but you can sacrifice that for a fair amount of speed or power with either Leo or Arblest (sp?). Both are cheap and I'm pretty sure the +1's are too.

Got to do my first real merit party on THF tonight. SAM/WAR MNK/WAR THF/WAR BRD BRD RDM @ the middle bird camp. The SAM was voking birds off the BRD so his damage was shafted. We were getting Min/Mad/March x2. I wish I had brought more pizzas with me as my acc was lacking after I ate the 2 and only had mithkabobs on me. **** even some crab sushi probably would have helped me more.

Meriting on THF is a lot more busy than I expect and 100x more busy than what I'm used to (usually merit on SAM). It was a lot of fun, but I don't think I'll do it very often. Still working on my gear and merits for THF so I know theres a lot of room for improvement.

This was a big week for me, both in the game and out.

Homam Cosciales! Been a loooooong time coming for those. Omega just wouldn't give them up. Was 2nd in line for them for like 9 months and countless Omegas, then we got back to back Cosciales drops. Booyah!

Enkidu's Cap. Thank you, LS. ^_^

3~4M profit, got lucky with some big-synth crafting.

And on a more personal note, the following also happened IRL that nicely 'rounded out' my week, ha ha: (Though not necessarily a THF accomplishment, its my accomplishment, and as I frequent and identify with the THF forumn more than any other on the board, I just wanted to share it here along with the others above.)

Finished final exam of my last graduate course: I'm done! Graduation, and a Masters degree (MBA), finally! I'm freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! Now time to go get a real job, lol.

This part is awesome, that's a huge achievement. Although I must warn you, once you find full time employment the 40 hours a week plus commute will hardly feel "free", but the benefits of such a step more than make up for it. I got full time about 4 months ago, and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. It's nice to be able to pay bills and be able to eat >.>.

So yeah, really good weekend. Grats for that, you deserve it.

Parrying broke 210 today. It's taking forever, but I'll eventually cap it. >_>

I've very literally been doing nothing in FFXI except for "skilling" parrying for the past month and a half. Go solo Nightmare Bats for up to six hours a day for a few consecutive weeks. You'll see some increase, and make a few hundred seals on the side (and a few million gil, as a nice bonus). (I've soloed over 30 merits on these things, and taken my NPC from 31-58.)

I'm taking a break for a bit, though; I'm starting to burn out. Having gone from 178-210 in six weeks is ridiculous.

@ Angina: just get 1 or 2 mage friends and cap it in a few days :x
But if you enjoy to solo cap it more power to you.
