Sneak Attack / Trick Attack + Weapon Skill GuideFollow

The boards are often littered with questions on Tick Attack and Sneak Attack, how to macro them, and how they are applied in different party situations, using different weapon skills.

This guide is meant to answer the questions surrounding the thief abilities of Sneak Attack and Trick Attack.

The guide is also designed to inform the budding thief and players of other classes, so they might come away with an understanding of what thieves do, how it is applied, and how it benefits a party.

I will be demonstrating party formation. Here are some conventions that I will use.

mob means: monster

Main jobs will be signified by their capitalized abbreviations: THF WHM NIN etc.

I will also use role abbreviations such as: TANK1, TANK2 etc.

mob or player facing (direction) will be shown with an arrow head type character such as > or < or ^ .

For example, a thief facing east is shown like so: THF>


Macros
======

I will supply a few macro examples, but this guide is not a macro tutorial. Refer to a macro tutorial or guide for macroing information.


ABILITY DESCRIPTIONS
====================

What is Sneak Attack?
---------------------

Sneak Attack is a thief ability gained at level 15. It allows a thief to deal big damage to a mob (monster). The catch is that you must be behind the mob in order for it to work. There are theories about how far off of dead center you can be, but I am not aware of any confirmed numbers. Just be sure to line your center up with the center of the mob and it will work.

If you are in position behind the mob within tolerable limits, Sneak Attack is guaranteed to hit.

Stats which effect Sneak Attack are Strength and Dexterity. Sneak attack damage is calculated as a normal critical attack with a bonus determined by the character's dexterity. The more dexterity you have, the higher the bonus. All other regular melee damage factors also apply, such as weapon base damage, strength, attack, mob defense and mob vitality. These are all applied using a formula (which I will not discuss here) to determine sneak attack damage.

Sneak Attack is an instant ability, in that a Sneak Attack is an event, and has no duration beyond point of impact. When Sneak Attack is "readied", an icon will appear at the top of your screen. Your next attack will be an attempted Sneak Attack.

You don't have to be engaged to ready Sneak Attack. It can be readied at any time. This is an important point, and will factor heavily in successful Thief battle tactics. Basically, when Sneak Attack is readied, the next melee hit (within the one minute timer) will be an attempted Sneak Attack. After one minute, if not used, Sneak Attack will expire, and must be readied again.

The 1 minute timer begins the moment Sneak Attack is readied, not on the subsequent melee attack. This is critically important. If Sneak Attack is readied, and your next melee attack is 55 seconds later, Sneak Attack can be readied 5 seconds after that attack, or 1 minute after sneak attack was last readied. This means that, theoretically, 3 Sneak Attacks are possible within a 1 minute, and ten second window....


1. Ready Sneak Attack
2. At 56 seconds (of the Sneak Attack Timer), a mob is engaged by the party. Being in correct position, a Sneak Attack lands.
3. After 5 seconds, Sneak Attack is readied.
4. 1 second later, the second Sneak Attack lands.
5. One minute later, Sneak Attack is readied and landed.

Result: 3 Sneak Attacks in ~1:10


By timing ability use strategically, the thief can maximize their contribution to a party. I'll touch on this more later...


What is Trick Attack?
---------------------

Trick Attack is a thief ability gained at level 30. It allows a thief to deal damage to a mob, but transfer the resulting "hate" or enmity to someone else in the party. This means that the hate generated by the Trick Attack is not accounted to the thief, but rather the "Trick Partner"

Trick attack requires special positioning in that there must be a party member (trick partner, or partner) directly between the thief and the mob. The positions shown below will both work for Trick Attack if used alone (without Sneak Attack).

Notice, trick attack when used alone does not require that you are behind the mob, only that there is someone directly between you and the mob.

Unlike Sneak Attack, Trick Attack is not guaranteed to hit. Even though your positioning is perfect, Trick Attack still can and will miss at times.

Trick attack is on a one minute timer which works exactly like the Sneak Attack timer described above.



On Hate
=======

Hate, or Enmity, are generated by all actions which adversely effect a mob. During combat, the mob will face the person in the party it hates most at that point in time.

Actions which generate hate include:

- engaging the mob
- inflicting damage on the mob (through melee, magic or songs)
- provoking the mob
- enhancing (buffing) a character the mob hates
- healing a character the mob hates
- debuffing the mob
- some character abilities generate hate such as:

THF: stealing, mugging
PLD: invincibility, shield bash
others..

As combat progresses, the mob has a hate pecking order that it keeps. As party members do their jobs, the mob will turn to face the party member who currently has the most hate.

For party efficiency, hate control is critical. Being able to successfully manage hate placement in a party is an integral part of the successful party, and is required if you want to stay alive. Having the mob pound on a mage results in a dead mage. If the mages die, everyone else might die, including the elusive thief. Death aside, an important key to party efficiency and maximum experience/time ratio lies in hate management.

Through the use of thief abilities, thieves are the only class in the game which can actively divert hate to another party member, ideally a tanking class such as PLD, NIN or WAR.



What is "Stacking" and what "stacks" with what?
===============================================

Stacking is a term used to describe the complimentary combination of abilities and weapon skills. Not all abilities can be combined, and not all weapon skills stack with all abilities. There are a few important combinations that do work extremely well. I will give you the general rule, and the most practical applications.


Weapon skills
-------------

Weapon skills can only be used one at a time, when the player has 100+ TP. Stacking of weapon skills is not possible. Some weapon skills can be stacked with abilities, however. This is described blow, read on.


Abilities
----------

It is possible to use more than one ability at a time. For example, a thief could use Perfect Dodge and Flee at the same time. The net result is a very fast thief who cannot be physically hit for 30 seconds. This is an example of ability stacking.


Abilities + Weapon Skills
-------------------------


Some weapon skills can be stacked with abilities. In the case of the Thief, a weapon skill can be stacked with Sneak attack. Not all Weapon skills stack, mind you, so understanding the stacking rules is important:

Weapons skills which inflict physical damage can be stacked with Sneak Attack. Elemental weapon skills will not stack.

For example, let's look at an attempt to stack Gust Slash (a dagger weapon skill) with Sneak Attack.


Sneak + Gust Slash
------------------

A successful stacking would have Sneak Attack and Gust Slash attacks both "stacking" (being applied) to a single melee attack.
The result would be a single combined damage total for both a Sneak Attack and Gust Slash landing in a single blow. This is stacking.

Wait! If you were to try the example above, it would fail to stack every single time! Why? Because Gust Slash is a wind based elemental attack, and elemental attacks do not stack with Sneak attack.


So which Weapon Skills DO stack with Sneak Attack?
--------------------------------------------------


The rule again is that any weapon skill which inflicts physical, non elemental damage, will stack with Sneak Attack. Here is a list of Weapon Skills which are known to stack with Sneak Attack. Thanks to Deadgye for his additions to this list:

H2H: Combo, Shoulder tackle, One inch Punch, Raging Fists, Spinning attack. Howling Fist, Dragon Kick, Asuran Fists.

Dagger: Wasp Sting, Shaodwstitch, Viper Bite, Energy steal, Energy Drain, Dancing Edge, Shark Bite, Ecisceration.

Sword: Fast Blade, Circle Blade, Vorpal Blade, Swift Blade, Savage Blade.

Great Sword: Hard Slash, Power Slash, Shockwave, Crescent moon, Sickle Moon, Spin Slash, Ground Strike.

Club: Brainshaker, Skullbreaker, True strike, Judgement, Hexa Strike, Black Halo.

Staff: Heavy Swing, Shell Crusher, Full Swing, Spirit Taker, Retribution.

Axe: Raging Axe, Smash Axe, Galka Axe, Avalanche Axe, Spinning Axe, Rampage, Clamity, Mistral Axe, Decimination.

Great axe: Shield Break, Iron Tempest, Sturmwind, Armor Break, Keen Edge, Weapon Break, Raging Rush, Full Break, Steel Cyclone.

Scythe: Slice, Dark Harvest, Spinning Scythe, Vorpal Scythe, Guillotine, Cross Reaper, Spiral ****.

Spear: Double Thrust, Leg Sweep, Penta Thrust, Vorpal Thrust, Skewer, Sheeling thrust, Impulse Drive.

Katana: Blade: Rin, Blade: Retsu, Blade: Jin, Blade: Ten, Blade: Ku

Great Katana: Tachi: Enpi, Tachi: Hobaku, Tachi: Yukikaze, Tachi: Gekko, Tachi: Kasya.



At level 33, a thief with a fully leveled dagger skill learns the Viper Bite weapon skill. This weapon skill is the thief's bread and butter until level 60, when they will learn Dancing Edge. Before level 33 however, dagger weapon skills are not particularly effective, and there are weapon skills available to hand-to-hand and sword wielding thieves which far outshine a dagger's performance.


So, if you are using a sword, the macro to "stack" Fast Blade with Sneak Attack is:

Using this macro, when in correct Sneak Attack position, results in a single blow for LARGE damage, and a LOT of hate for the thief.

What about the thief being able to divert hate to someone else?
Ah! Now we're talking about the big daddy of thief abilities:


Sneak Attack + Trick Attack Stacking
====================================


Stacking Sneak Attack and Trick Attack is a class defining ability combination.

We know how Sneak works, and we know how Trick works. Let's look at stacking these two abilities.

As we know, both Sneak and Trick use a one minute cool down timer and the that timer starts counting down from the time the ability is readied, NOT when it is used (a hit on the mob). Convenient that Sneak and Trick both have a 1 minute timer.. I wonder if its a coincidence? Nope!


/ja "Sneak Attack" <me>

The macro above will stack Sneak and Trick, into something that has several names and references. Here are a few:


Fuidama: a Japanese (using English characters) term which incorporates forms of the words sneaky and tricky. So Fuidama means sneak/trick!

SATA: combined abbreviations for Sneak Attack and Trick Attack SA/TA

I've seen it called SANTA as well, but I prefer Fuidama.


OK so Sneak and Trick can be stacked to form something called Fuidama. How is it applied?


Positioning is key. Sneak requires that the thief is directly behind the mob. Trick requires that a party member be directly between the thief and the mob. Following this logic:

Fuidama requires that the thief be directly behind a party member, who is directly behind the mob.

Here is the the positioning:

THF> WAR> mob> PLD


When Fuidama is successfully landed, the result is truly massive damage, and all of the hate from the blow is added to the hate tally for the WAR "trick partner", not the thief!

So, if controlling hate is critical to party success, and Fuidama transfers massive hate to the tank, Fuidama is a valuable hate control tool which maximizes party efficiency? Yes!



Can Weapon Skills be combined with Fuidama?
===========================================


Yes, they can, for even larger damage, and even more hate control potential. Just remember to stack Weapon Skills with physical damage, not elemental damage. Here is an example macro for Fuidama + Viper Bite

This guide is a "how to", not a combat tactics tutorial. There are many details that go into playing a thief effectively, and the use of Fuidama is most important.

Pretty good but, these are i belive almost all the skills that stack with sneak and/or trick.

I may be wrong about the AOE attacks but i will list them since they are not elemental. And It may also not effect MP skills, but it may. Some also might be wrong so Please try to correct it.

Just a note:

Decimal points on /wait commands are thrown out. "/wait 1.5" is the same as "/wait 1".

I did a specific test to verify this, but for some reason, I can't recall exactly what it was. (I think it was something like two /wait 1.5 not adding up to /wait 3) I will post it when I can remember, if asked.

I believe he meant to state the only skills you'll be likely to use pre-Viper Bite, but for the sake of adding to that list, I (though I only did this once, may possibly be a mistake) found that Shining Blade works with Sneak Attack, even though it's Light elemental.

Last night I was in a group of high levels attempting to get my and two other's Papyrus (Got 3 of them within a few hours, not too shabby), and the WHM aggroed an Earth Elemental with Shellra. At the start of the fight, my Sneak Attack did 80'ish damage, and later in the battle, when I attempted a Sneak/Shining Blade, it did 160'ish (which is quite nice against an elemental), and the Sneak Attack cursor did disappear.

I don't stand by this 100%, but it seems to be true.

no prob and O_O did my rating go up!? yay lol, finally its more then 2.17, .. i had 2.17 from my first day.. because of one post that had only 1-2 replies.. lol.. seems unfair to me, but thats off the topic, anyway, if i get a chance to test non elemental AOEs, and in 1 lvl i should have the mp drain skill, i will try to post the info. One thing i don't know about is those staff mp skills, since the dont really attack the enemy, ill have to test those... but sadly, thf can't raise staff skill... so i'm afraid im in the dark about that.

nice, if i may add a few amendments though...

first off in the H2H list of weapon skills that stack with sneak attack you're missing my favorite, Backhand Blow.

and also some advanced maneuvers for fuidama's

as i passed level 50 i began to notice alot of problems with lag messing up fuidamas. at one point (while in garlaige citadel, while serket spawned and a party of high level JP were fighting him) the lag was so bad that sneak would go off...i'd swing negating the sneak, trick would go off...i'd swing again negating the trick...and then viperbite would go off doing a total of 50 damage.

the first method i tried to circumvent this was to disengage from battle, then i would fire off sneak and trick, then wait for the skillchain to start, then i used a macro as follows...

/attack <t>
/wait 1
/ws "Viper Bite" <t>

the problem with this set up was that in high lag the ws might go off before i had fully engaged and there for be useless or someone (bards mostly) would cast a spell and viperbite would wait for the spell effect to stop before going off, but normal attacks would continue.

then i moved on to three seperate macros.

/ja "Trick Attack" <me>
---
/ja "Sneak Attack" <me>
---
/ws "Viper Bite" <t>

and when the skill chain starts i start spamming the trick macro, when i see the blue exposion on my screen i start spamming the sneak attack macro and when i see the red explosion i start spamming viperbite, this set upt has never missed once, but its kind of overkill.

then i decided to compromise between the two and just use two macros...

/ja "Trick Attack" <me>
/wait 1
/ja "Sneak Attack" <me>
---
/ws "Viper Bite" <t>

again when the skillchain starts i fire off the sneak+trick macro and wait until i see the red explosion animation then start to spam the viperbite animation. this also has never missed regardless of lag.

all i can say though as far as which is best to use is, go with what works for as long as it continues to work.

sneak also affects tachi goten and kagero. there is a notable damage difference sneaked vs non sneaked.

I am also 99.9% certain jinpu will also stack with sneak.

I'm a lvl 15 THF, and I just have a little tip to add to this for THFs lvl 15-29...I find that in order to fully maximize the timing of SA, before you can use TA, this macro helps:

/echo Sneak Attack is ready for use!

For those of you who didn't know, the /echo sends a message that only the Macroer can see, so it helps cut down on battle lag a little.

yes i'd also like to know if you can use SATA behind say a pld who is the tank with the mob facing him (like the guy a couple posts above)

It seems if we are truly to keep hate in one place we would need to be able to increase hate on the tank who already has some hate.

For both the Sneak and Trick attacks to work, you have to be behind the monster.

You're right, you can't do this with a single tank. You need two tanks so that one can be your 'trick partner'.

Where I Have trouble with SATA is when we are going to SC right off the first SATA from the pull. I'd like prep-SATA so i can do the second one quicker, but whenever I engage I always hit before I can Viper Bite, even when spamming my Viper Bite macro. Does anyone have any tips on this? Thanks.

Usally i dont precharge, and i am doing the renki with the virst voker. Tank gets behind. Voker uses wep skill, and i unlesh my fuidama macro.

Beautiful job with the guide. Now if only the tankers out there would read it and realize that running around does not help them dodge attacks...but it does majorily reduce a thief's damage. One question though...i have gathered through my experience that ranged attacks are not affected by sneak attack whatsoever. I just want to make sure that i was not in the correct position when i did so.

Looks like I was misunderstood : my question was only about trick attack because I do know that SATA won't work this way as well as this one :

yes it is working :-)

trick attack doesnt depend on the facing mob but u must be behind your TRICK partner so u can trick him almost always

problem is in parties when fighting IT VT mobs it will do not do a reasonable amout of DMG and TRICK attack when solo without SNEAK attack can miss

SNEAK ATTACK never miss TRICK ATTACK can miss -> in combo they will never miss

...

i used a lot TRICK > TANK >< MOB when i was RSE hunting or helping people to find ruby for example so i use usually TRICK > WHM > MOB and it will do nice dmg when fighting easy worthwile mobs it will do nice dmg and the mob will facing the MAGE TANK :) but dont worry he can stand a few shots and i can SNEAK ATTACK the mob back to face me :-) this combo i was using primarly when hunting RSE keys :-)

Sneak attack can only miss when you are not behind it. Trick attack can miss if you are not behind someone or it can just randomly miss.

I think the only time I made use of trick alone, and it didn't miss, was when I did it with Viper Bite. Mob was facing NIN, fight got messed up and had to help the NIN keep hate.

If you are stacking SANTA and you and the tank are positioned properly and not moving, the trick part of the SANTA will never miss. I've heard some random posts claiming that tricks missed, but I've used it for 20 levels now, and under normal party conditions, once we had our rhythm (aka everyone got into position, and i informed our tank that he just needed to be close to directly behind, and needed to hold still) my SANTA has always been on relatively the same scale and always given hate as it should.

even though this was a long time ago in a posting far far away (from the bottom), i figured i'd clear this handy tool up.

<t> is the scripting variable for your current target
<bt> is the scripting variable for your GROUP's target

rules for using <bt>:
  • atleast 1 member of your group must have this target engaged(that means weapon out ready to fight it or currently casting on it...seems not to work if the puller is running back and no one else has engaged)
  • if you're the main tank...don't use <bt>...if you are, that means someone is engaging the monster before you. use /assist puller's name. This pretty much allows everyone else to use <bt>

  • as a puller...i dont' get the benefit of <bt> too much. every once and a while, we'll get aggroed and <bt> becomes quite useful. The following is the typical macro utilizing <bt>:

    /attack <bt>
    /echo >>>>>Assisting with the <bt><<<<<

    for mages, its usually:

    /target <bt>
    /lockon
    /echo >>>>>Assisting with the <bt><<<<<

    Just thought I'd add my two cents here;
    Macro I use:

    /p ()Sneak Attack()+()Trick Attack()+()Viper Bite() in 3!
    /ja "Sneak Attack" <me>
    /wait 1
    /ja "Trick Attack" <me>
    /wait 2
    /ws "Viper Bite" <t>

    This allows for *much* easier timing with Skillchains. Most people use /wait 1, which works fine, but Viper Bite doesn't actually go until about 2 seconds have passed (SA and TA need to activate, along with their animation) extending the second wait to 2 works quite well for me. Otherwise I need to count out one second when the WS before me goes, and I can ***** that up.

    Note: Using this macro will *sometimes* make your weapon hit before the WS is used. This seems to happen if you're about to hit when you start the macro. Simply because the SA and TA animations take just over two seconds. During the time between then and three seconds passing for the WS to activate, a normal attack may happen, getting rid of SATA, and then moments later you waste your TP. Only if your weapon's delay is under 2-3 seconds. For example:

    You hit the mob for 32 points of damage.
    (Wait about 1.5-2 seconds, then hit the macro)
    /p ()Sneak Attack()+()Trick Attack()+()Viper Bite() in 3!
    /ja "Sneak Attack" <me>
    /wait 1
    /ja "Trick Attack" <me>
    /wait 2
    Right here, your weapons delay will be over, and a normal attack will hit.
    You deal a critical hit for 287 points of damage!
    /ws "Viper Bite" <t>
    The WS is then wasted, due to the lack of SA or TA.

    The solution is to hit the macro *right* as you strike with a normal attack. As the delay counter seems frozen while SA/TA are activating. Then the three seconds will pass normally, and you will complete Fuidama, dealing a large amount of damage, and hopefully continuing an SC (For even more damage) ^^

    Okay I have gotten finally the idolized skill "viper bite" I hadnt been keeping up with my dagger at all and instead had been using swords. Well today i get viper bite and with much anticipation switch to my federation kukri and use it with sneak attack.

    Here is my problem, I only did about 260 dmg on average, this is just with SA and not TA, because i usually only party with two other ppl and one is a whm so no one to SATA off of. On the other hand with my Swords, Dual weilding Mithran Scimitars, I do 290 - 320, and this is an exp level lower and on the same mobs. What am I doing wrong? I thought that this weapon skill was supposed to be better? This is with skill points maxed out in both weapons, i think 93 for sword and 105 for dagger.

    Im level 34 now and I dont think I wanna give up my scimitars. Viper bite just isnt comparing in dmg. I tested this in rolanberry killing weak mobs also(death wasps) and damage with SA+Viper was about 350 while SA+Fast Blade was about 500. So far ive been making it a point to equip the best gear money can buy, ive farmed for hours on end to get the emp hairpin, lizzie boots, balance rings, mithran scimitars, nomads mantle +1 etc. So far Im convinced that Fast Blade is still better, If someone knows if i am possibly doing something wrong plz let me know, thanks ^^;

    Hmmm. Firstly, I'd say use a Federation Knife over the Kukiri, but that's not the point. You say you're dual weilding Mithran Scimitars, but you didn't say anything about dual weilding Federation Kukiris. If you only have one, I think that would explain the decreased damage.

    Anyhow, I'd still use the dagger. I'm a 37THF/WAR, and my Federation Knife is awesome. I stopped leveling Sword a few levels ago, so I can't say whether Fast Blade would be better, but I think there's a reason people switch to Dagger at 33 :p

    The other thing to consider, is you'll gain TP faster with Daggers, due to lower delay time. This means more Viper Bites you can pull off.

    Lol, you already answered your own question: Viper Bite only truly shines when stacked with BOTH Sneak and Trick. Yes, SA+VB hits for less than SA+(Random Stackable Sword Weaponskill), at least throughout the level 30s. I imagine it doesn't change until your sword skillcap is significantly lower than your dagger cap.

    If you're soloing or otherwise not in a position to stack Trick with Sneak + WS, use H2H or sword with Sneak Attack instead. Unless you're suitably higher level that you own with a dagger. ^^

    BTW, actually wanted to add some useful information: I'm the impatient type, and I always used to spam my SATA macro to see how much was left on the timer. ^^ In a recent update, however, the new command /recast was added, which works with Job Abilities as well as spells and whatnot. Used in the format /recast "Job Ability" it will /echo to you how much time remains before that ability can be used again. I now have a SATA timer reminder for myself that goes like this:

    /recast "Sneak Attack"
    /recast "Trick Attack"

    ...which returns:

    [Sneak Attack] : 0:00
    [Trick Attack] : 0:00

    ...or however much time is left. Much better than spamming my actual SATA fire macro to see how much time is left and ******** up the /waits. ^^ HTH someone.

    Thanks for the response guys. Ive been trying it with dual Fed. Kukri, Mithran Scimitars, and one of each. So far even with trick attack, fast blade with the scimitars is still more effective. Perhaps in a few levels when dagger skill is much higher than sword skill this will be different. I am gonna keep them both up but for now the delay and accuracy difference is nominal compared to the damage with the swords.

    Don't forget that Tricks also give hate to whomever stand closest to the Mob.

    For example:

    THF>War>Mob><PLD

    If a Bard or someone stand right on top of the mob or half frame, then the hate will transfer to that player instead of War.

    I noticed you used <bt> instead of <t>, can you please explain this? I am a level 32 PLD atm and I'd like to try to get a thf in a static party but I need to know how they work first. a list of macro abbeviations would be nice if you know a place or have a list, I've looked everywhere but I can only seem to find those listed in other indirectly related threads shuch as this one. Any info is appreciated! Great post btw, rated up!^^

    <bt> means "battle target". It's a way to specifically target the mob currently engaged by the party.

    Think of being in Yhoator or the Crawler's Nest. Those lizzards that keep getting in the way... Using <bt> will ensure that you do not mistakenly hit a mob that you do not want to.

    There is a caveat though... if there is no currently engaged mob, the macro will return an error and fail. You couldn't use <bt> to pull for example.

    Not true^^ Using <bt> to pull is excellent. Just target the mob you want to pull and if there are no engaged mobs by your party <bt> acts just like <t>. Use your <Ranged Attack> and u can even unselect all targets and use <bt> to report the mob name to your pty while you're running back to camp.

    I really hate having to explain how this works to new parties. I think I just need to make a macro of it to save time. But even ppl that know it still don't think about it. Last night I was in a PT with a NIN 3 THF's(one of which is me), WHM, and BLM. Mob came in and I stood next to the NIN who was tanking. 2 thfs dtood behind and did their sneak attacks and then just stayed there. I had to remind them prob 10 times to get out of the way so that I could move around for my sneak attack. All thieves want their PT to know how to put them to full use and stand just right and so forth, but don't forget the rest of us! Even despite this the PT still did pretty good though
