White Mage gear sets General questionFollow

Hey guys,

I am fairly new on the White Mage boards. I am really only here because my brother just came back, and I am leveling his white mage for him in my spare time. I am normally a thief, so I am very used to many many different gear sets and I was wondering what gear sets I should be looking at for white mage.

Currently, this is what I am considering

Idle
Resting
Engaged
Engaged /w club
Engaged /w staff
Cure Set
Divine Magic Set
Enfeebling Set
Enhancing Set
Stoneskin Set
Weaponskill set
Elemental WS set

If feels like I am missing something, I can't tell what it is because I am really unfamiliar with whm in general. Is there any other kind of set I should be looking into?

Additionally, when it comes to cure, I have been looking into the formulas, to see how it works. In general terms, it looks like for cure the priority is Potency > Mind = 5 Healing Skill for the most part. Is that right? Is the VIT stat referenced in the equation my VIT or your target's VIT?

In regards to healing, the formula recently changed. The priority now is Potency > Healing Skill > MND > VIT. A lot of people will argue that you want to have a good amount of - enmity in there as well, but I don't and have never seen a problem. The only time I take hate is if the mob has a hate reset move and we are duo'ing.

The sets I carry are:

Idle
Fastcast
Single target cures
- ga cures
Enfeebling
Enhancing
- DT gear (pdt/mdt)

I have some divine magic stuff, but only because it falls into my other gear sets. For repose, I typically go with FC/Haste so that I can cast it more often, as opposed to it sticking. My divine is not capped and I have rarely had issues with it landing.

I roll at 74/80 on whm without having any melee gear. If I am planning on whm melee, then I leave all my staves in my satchel and equip a club. This gives me the room to add in my ws/tp gear.

Ok, good to know I am pretty much on the right track. Out of curiosity, what is the difference between a single target cure set and a -ga cure set? More -enmity?

Edit: My first focus is obviously to get my casting sets up to snuff. I just happen to know that eventually my brother is going to want to melee too. I can't keep him from it, so afterwards I have to work on that.

Curagas do not give the cureskin, so I use a set that has more FC/Haste at the time the spell goes off, while maintaining my 50% potency. I don't use AFv3 body in this set, since its bonus does not apply. I use Nefer because Akvan is a punk and I don't have Hekas yet. This would be a good place to throw in your -enmity gear as well. I am usually in the DD party, so I spend most of my time casting curagas to keep the whole party alive, so I want them to recharge faster.

Similar to Espetta but I use same equipment for Cure as Curaga, I've never had a problem with recast, even casting the same Curaga back-to-back. I also use the same equipment for idle & fast cast, which allows me to avoid swapping gear before I start casting, which can introduce some delays you wouldn't otherwise have.

So basically, my sets are:
Idle (refresh & fast cast, usually something like this but I change out pieces for certain events)
Cure
Enfeeb
Enhancing
Barspell (different from enhancing, uses more AF3 for set bonus rather than pieces like Augur's Gloves which only add 4 enhancing skill)
Repose
Regen (rarely used anymore)
Stoneskin (only carry a couple pieces for this, mainly Siegel Sash & Stone Gorget)

Honestly, I know you come from THF realm, but DD sets are the last thing you should be thinking about. If he wants to melee, work on a club setup for him. Don't bother with getting him a staff setup, elemental WS setup, etc. Just do a decent club setup with a decent Realmrazer & Mystic Boon WS set. If you get him onto the WHM melee kick, and he plays with anyone other than a duo with you two by yourselves, you will only be harming him in the long run. WHM has no business meleeing in 99% of the game. And I say this as a WHM who has Lv99 Mjollnir and a Kraken Club. I'm not saying don't do it, I just worry because you seem to prioritize it just as high as the sets that truly matter for WHM.

Also, you don't need a resting set anymore. Those used to be required, but these days WHM's don't really run out of MP nearly as easily, and inventory space is just too limited to make resting gear worthwhile.

No, you are right. Our goal is mainly duo, so he wants to be able to melee with me when we play. He has no intention of playing in large group content, he really only wants to play with me, so the melee thing is only because of that. Any large group content, and he will either be in the healers roll, or he will use another job.

I was not trying to imply that he would be meleeing all the time. However, it is attractive to me as a thief, as it gives me access to a few more red procs in abyssea that I don't actually have access to, so I don't discourage it.

As I stated in my second post, my priority is getting his curing set up to stuff, along with the other magic casting sets like enfeebling and enhancing before I focus on melee.

If that's the case I think you're on the right track, then. I'd still skip a staff build, though. Skill it up for procs, but he will never be using it for damage unless he's brewing, in which case your build doesn't really matter aside from maybe an MAB build for Cataclysm or something. Without brew, club is 100% the way to go, and even with brew club isn't bad. Flash Nova can do about 7-8k easily, whereas Cataclysm might do 10-11k with the same build.
