WHM "Tanking" gear.Follow

I like to try and think outside the box, and I thought it would be fun to try and get a gear set for tanking on my WHM. I looked through the sticky posts, but any of the ones I tried don't seem to want to work; and all the guides on Wiki focus on magery (for obvious reasons). Playing a normal WHM is all well and good, but sometimes it's fun to go a bit crazy.

Anyway, I was hoping for targets from anyone that knows of PDT/MDT/MDB/DEF gear that is useable by WHM. First obvious choice is Genbu's Shield. I was also considering getting Reverend Mail, but I don't know if that's been outdated (as far as tanking gear) with anything new. Beyond that, I'm really not sure what to go hunting for. Right now my mindset is for a WHM/RDM setup, rather than /NIN, though I'd do that if I had to.

Any suggestions, or hints at where I can look for these things, would be appreciated!

Edit: While we're at it, could also use some ideas for a good DPS club/hammer (other than Kraken Club, if anyone would even suggest that) to look for.

Molva Maul looks like pretty good base D / DPS for something that's not Relic/Mythic/Empy/TotM. Cirein-Croin drops it, and you can probably find plenty of people farming Lanterns for their Empyrean weapon.

Moepapa Mace is even better if you don't mind shelling out the gil for it.

Winged Wand (dropped by Rencounter Chariot) has slightly better DPS than Molva Maul, but much lower base D. It has a hidden additional effect of fire damage. I have no idea how potent it is, or how often it procs. The testimonial on wiki about the hidden affect makes it sound unimpressive.

I've always hated Reverend Mail, but Hydra Doublet & Goliard Saio both have enmity down. You might consider making a Royal Redingote for this purpose if you're serious about it.

Also, the obvious DT items are:
Cheviot/Umbra Cape
Twilight Torque
Defending Ring
Dark Rings from Konschtat
Patronus Ring

If you're talking about putting together a serious tanking set for serious NMs, I might suggest also making a spell interrupt build. It's not super hard to cap interruption (102~103%) which means your casts will never be interrupted. WHM can even do it without swapping weapons and losing their TP. This is an option that most jobs simply can't even consider because there isn't enough gear available and you need tons of it before it starts to pay off.

I think the biggest problem you'll have is enmity. WHM can't produce a ton of it, and generally doing so requires a lot of MP that you'll be hard-pressed to recover while tanking. Tanking on WHM is a busy job and won't leave you a lot of time to get TP for Mystic Boon or Spirit Taker. You're going to be doing everything you can to keep yourself alive and keep hate on you at the same time, and won't be able to think about stuff like MP conservation.

Winged wand enfire was corrected in an update and no longer has the effect. I like winged wand just for the fact cast though.

You might also consider using physical damage down club from magian trials. Golaird trews are another option.

If your looking for enmityfor the reasons pergatory pointed out I believe we are on several of the nuking pieces that add enmity as a balancing stat.

Thank you all for the fantastic advice.

Molva Maul - I have some friends that camp Cirein on a regular basis, and I'm sure they will let me have the maul. I definitely like that high base damage.

I agree enmity generation will likely be a problem. Royal Redingote would be easier for me to obtain than the mail, probably, but at a loss of 10 defense. I would lose out on the evasion, too, but I don't think whm has access to enough evasion gear to consider it much of a loss.

The PDT gear shouldn't be hard to come across; assuming I can get a couple decent dark rings (Say 4% each), with Genbu's Shield, Cheviot cape and the torque, that would be -24% PDT (29% at night). A nice chunk of damage, I'd say. If things get ugly, can also swap in earth staff for another 20%.

Was there anything for magic damage that really stands out? Or is it pretty much just relying on shell and augmented bar spells?

For magic damage:
http://www.ffxiah.com/search/item?&jobs[]=8&stat[]=20

For physical damage:
http://www.ffxiah.com/search/item?&jobs[]=8&stat[]=93

(Allakhazam won't do the links right, you'll have to copy & paste the whole link.)

Items for magic damage that stand out as not super hard to get are Coral/Merman's Ring/Earrings, Colossus's Mantle, and Lore gear.

For the Ring slot, it's probably better to farm for augmented Dark Rings in Abyssea Konschtat, since they can have -PDT and -MDT at the same time, and the amount of -MDT can surpass the amount on Merman's Ring.

Few things we need to consider on the idea of "whm tank".
- We whm lose hate fast.
- We are too squishy for most of the mobs even worth considering fighting.

Of course we can "somehow" offset these issues by getting appropriate gears for it. But it won't be enough.

Then if you even plan on being the tank on a party setup I would suggest that you build a DD setup to the max since this is the fastest way for you to gain hate.

Another issue is spell casting. When I solo I really hate when my spell gets interrupted, and whm get interrupted a lot when casting spell even with the slightest hit.

Easiest way to tank on a group setup is to get yourself a DD Gear/Haste setup and then a set for spell interruption.

Soloing NMs would involve a lot more gear set...

here is a video of me trying to tank multiple mobs on WHM
