Question about Level Sync & gearFollow

I am a former FFXI whm/brd from years ago and just recently decided to give the game another go. Obviously I quit long before level sync was introduced, so I'm a little puzzled by the mechanic now.

I know that SE says that gear is supposedly scaled down according to the level you sync to, but they also said that apparently stat bonuses are not included in this scaling, and are instead totally negated. So I have to ask, how is gear scaling beneficial to us as WHMs? Don't we still, then, have to carry around extra sets of lower level gear to switch into when we want to level sync? As far as I know, the ONLY thing that matters on my gear in the mid 20s right now is the bonus I get to my stats. I don't care how much damage my club does for example. I only care that it gives me +4 MND. If they're just removing the stat bonuses entirely when you level sync, then don't I still need to hold onto my lower level club that gives me +2 MND?

Seems like WHMs are getting a little screwed over in that regard, unless I'm missing something?

Things that scale down:

--Atributes (str, mnd, int, and so on)
-- MP and HP
-- Attack and defense

Things that disappear when you scale down:

-- Haste
-- Skill

--Things that stay in the gear (unsure on attributes and if SE changed the stats but when it first came out the following was true):

--Negative stats such as slow, evasion down and so on
--Negative attributes

Also, don't expect level 75 gear to be any useful if you sync down to level 30 or something like that.

The only thing I'd keep stored with npc in case you do sync down is the Seer's tunic set since you get synced down a lot to the levels 30-50.

It can be a pain for you to have numerous sets for every 10s of levels since sometimes they will just collect dust and fill up your inventory.

Hmm, you say attributes scale down, which was my main concern, but I notice that when I'm equipping a Yew Wand +1 (+4 INT, +4 MND), and I get synced to level ~11-ish, those stats disappear entirely. I have to equip a Willow Wand to see any additions to those stats again in the character sheet.

Is it that the gear is being scaled down and actually adding the correct amount to my stats, but the character profile pane is just buggy and doesn't show the exact +amount to the character profile pane?

The thing to keep in mind about scaled down gear is that they do not surpass what's available at those levels.

This was said by SE itself.

No gear scaled down is better than what you can get at those levels. Actually, most of the time, it is inferior.

Yeah the scaling is very hard to predict. It seems to be restricted to certain values per slot at given levels. For example, at a given level you can only get a max of 20 MP from ring, or something like that. A lot of the time this "maximum" is zero (because other items of the same level don't provide that stat) and so you end up with things like primary attributes (STR/DEX/etc) being reduced to zero even though it's a "scaled" stat.

Really you just gotta experiment and find what works best. For example, I've found that Star Ring is a terrific option under level cap because it offers both MND & MP, two options that aren't scaled to 0 under level cap because there are low-level MND rings and MP rings, but few that have both at the same time. So Star Ring is actually better than other options available at a lower level (after this feature was introduced, I put Vilma Ring in storage because Tamas+Star is better). However, in most cases, items that match the level you are at will perform better than scaled down gear. Especially with the latest round of low-level items introduced in the last update.

I wouldn't even bother with that sort of thing anymore, it is very rare nowadays that you'll see an actual party syncing that low (unless it's a SMN burn or whatever, in which case gear is irrelevant). Most people at "11-ish" continue to solo, mebbe duo/trio. FoV and signet protection makes EP-DC bulldozing easy.

If anything, pack a lowbie hammer to beat things with.
