Well, the diversity mission at Rutgers is rarely controversial, and our white population is way below the white population of the state. "More than half" are non-white, according to the website. And because of my familiarity with rutgers forms, I'm inclined to say the "white" group includes white Hispanics and Jews in this context.

And, realistically, the number of white students that got rejected because they were white is fairly low. Because, objectively speaking, if a white student and a black student look the same on paper (same school district, income bracket, and grades), the black student is the one that consistently performed better, because the black student was the one facing systemic oppression and racism.

So there is a performance gap there. It's not easily quantifiable, by any means, but it's there.

That's also why, at Rutgers, if you decide not to do the "optional" essay, you better have a nearly perfect transcript to have any hope of getting in, regardless of your race. They DO read those, and it's the single most-important factor in our acceptances. You can be white, have a ****** transcript, and hand in a really heartfelt essay and get in.

A friend of mine, a hispanic latino woman who spent time growing up in the DR and had a solid transcript, decided not to do the essay (assuming it wouldn't matter at a state school), and got rejected as a result.

/shrug

Honestly, if you're white and you manage to do only slightly better in school than a minorities student, 99 times out of a 100, it's because you didn't put in anywhere near the effort they did in the long run.

Occasionally, the system denies some white kids that deserved a spot. But the system almost certainly denies far more minorities kids who deserved a spot.

To be clear, I'm not trying to sound like I chugged the RU koolaid. It's just that the diversity aspect is one of the few things I do think Rutgers has been doing very well on (even if there's a lot of room for improvement).

Ok, it's not entirely true. I also know Texans like shooting stuff into space and from what I've seen of their motorsports they don't know how to turn right.

I know it's 2013, but in my mind, you're now a character from Blazing Saddles.

Why would we drive pickups with confederate flags painted on them?

We ride horses with confederate flags painted on them, obviously. You can't drive cattle with a pickup.

So Thor 2 was really, really good.

I didn't really give a crap about the central plot or anything, to be fair. But I was laughing the entire movie, and I was interested in the characters (mainly Loki, again to be fair).

So it gets a solid win from me.

I refuse to watch the movies because American comic book Thor is not Thor.

Psh, didn't you know your myths and legends were based off of a race of long-lived, technologically advanced aliens that once defended your ancestors from an invasion of Frost Giants?

Show some respect.

Also, you should totally watch the Avengers and Thor 2. You can skip the first one.

Frigga was a freaking BADASS in this movie.

No. Smiley: mad

But seriously, I don't give a **** about American comics and comic heroes to begin with. I don't care for Spiderman, Batman, Iron man and least of all Superman. I've seen some of the spiderman movies and some older batman ones as well as the first 2 iron man movies but I can't say I really liked any of them much aside from the brainless joy in seeing stuff explode.

This movie... wasn't really a super hero movie, actually.

I mean, it was. It had a super hero and stuff. But it just seems... wrong... to call it that. Earth barely played a part at all, and nearly the entirety of the movie (action scenes and more) take place in Asgard or other realms). And it's a lot of Asgardians vs. other super strong enemies (or strong enemies with really strong weaponry/ships).

Really, it was just a great science fantasy film.

A superhero film is typically all about saving/protecting the weak, etc. It goes out of its way to draw a contrast between the "ordinary" people and the hero.

This film didn't do that at all, mostly because humans/Earth were barely even a plot point.

If you have any desire to see Dark Elves that fly spaceships and shoot laser cannons, watch the movie.

And if you have no desire for any of that... well, then I just don't understand you. :P

Yes but in turn you get a moronic violation of Thor so it's still not worth looking at.

Meh, he's not that bad. He was annoying as hell at the start of the first movie, but his character isn't loudmouthed anymore.

The story alone is bad enough. Had they just given them different names it could be worth watching but they decided to take something good and beautiful and add aliens to it. It's as bad as that Ancient Aliens show.

Ha, the failure to utilize assets is what drives me insane. Smiley: lol

I can accept stupid plot decisions. If you give me a reason, I'll begrudgingly accept retcons that don't invalidate the past experiences of the audience.

But nothing annoys me more than story assets that have a lot to offer, but go chronically unused. Particularly when other assets have been so over-utilized that they're not even valuable anymore.

That's partially why I really liked this movie. Everyone previously in the universe was actually getting used in a way that mattered. That's not to say it was perfect. Sif, Volstagg, Fandral, and Hogun could have gotten more screen time. But they were at least utilized in ways I approved of when they got screen time.

But even then, literally every named character relevant to Thor was involved, and their own distinct personalities had an influence on events. Maybe not always as large as they should have been, but there weren't any characters just reduced to a plot device. And I like that. Smiley: grin
