8.865 million people in NJ. 459 per squared kilometer - #1 in the nation for population density.

Netherlands is 404 per squared kilometer.

Some looking around Wikipedia says that the only state in the US with a higher population density than the Netherlands is New Jersey (although Rhode Island is close) with the US as a whole at less than a tenth of the population density of the Netherlands.

Oregon even has only a 25th of the population density of the Netherlands... Just how @#%^ing empty is it 'round there?

Edit: Alaska is 41.35 times the size of the Netherlands while the Netherlands has a population about 25 times as large. No wonder they elected Sarah Palin, they must all be so far apart that you can't see the crazy anymore.

They have a density of 4.19 per squared kilometer. Smiley: lol

Alaska is 1.26, but c'mon. That's because nearly all people in Alaska are near the coast, and then it's just totally empty land.

Wyoming, however, is 2.26 per kilometer squared. What's their excuse? Smiley: mad

It's that no one wants to live in Wyoming.

Where I am? It's decently full. Not astounding by any means, but there are people around. The problem is most of the eastern part of the state, and really the south east, is basically deserted.

Here's a fun map. Each dot is 100 people, notice how few dots there are in the lower right. Those 2 counties in that corner are over 50,000 sq. km. in size and have fewer than 40,000 people.

We have a similar thing going on.
Population density 2012
per county
people per km2

We don't have any truly empty land though, we had to create some new land for a reason.

You guys have always had some good ingenuity there for sure. I'm not sure I'd want to live there though. But maybe that's just me, we don't have such a good track record with protecting areas that are below sea level from flooding.

I bet your land is actually useful though, unlike this kind of thing where there's really no reason to live anywhere near there. At least no economicly viable reason, some people like getting away from stuff, and we usually try to encourage them to do so.

That's why you hire Dutch companies after a storm, our last serious disaster was in 1953 after all and the Dutch started getting the water out of lakes for more land in the 1500's, although the first significant and large one was the Beemster.

It is and there's actually some limited tourism and what not. Problem is there are prettier places that are closer, and there's a lot more land than people who want to visit it. Some parts people let cows and stuff walk around on, much of it doesn't even work for that though.

You really need to get down in the weeds and look at population density by county if you want a decent idea.Screenshot
Wikipedia wrote:
2000 U.S. population density in persons per sq. mile (contiguous U.S. only). Averaged on a per-county basis.
Legend, light to dark (white to dark blue):
0-1 (white)
1-4 (yellow)
5-9 (yellow-green)
10-24 (green)
25-49 (teal)
50-99 (dark teal)
100-249 (blue)
250-66,995 (violet)

Looking at that you can see why we here refer to New Jersey as one long parkway. You can also see that Wyoming has an average of about 7 people per square mile, in my guesstimation. That's less than two families.

EDIT: I think 7 may actually be high.

EDIT: Hold on, teal? Is that really a color?

Population density in Denmark is 130/km2, Just throwing it out there.

Fairly certain it doesn't include Greenland, though.

Or maybe it does. 130 per square kilometer doesn't sound like much.

So one of my theater friends was just complaining on facebook because she took her four kids to a place called Kid Zone, and asked for a discount and she was treated rudely. I don't condone the rudeness, but I feel like it's really wrong to go to a place of business and ask for a discount just because you have a lot of kids. Kids are expensive, if you couldn't afford them all, you shouldn't have had them. Plus there are playgrounds available to take kids in my hometown that are free. If you can't afford the full price of this Kid Zone place, take them there?

Also, yay 9k ding?

Four kids isn't really a group. Usually places have set group discounts at something like 6-10. Complaining about that is @#%^ing stupid.

Depends a bit whether she was asking if there was a discount or asking for a discount too. Also in my experience people interpret tiredness and directness as rudeness, especially when someone is saying they don't have group discounts etc

Alma is a safe bet and requires less reading than arguing with Gbaji.

Also, it never hurts to ask if a place can help you out, they may be able to give a discount to get you in but if they say no it's no.

Just the parts that don't matter. My city is pretty packed.
And everyone who can't afford NYC is in New Jersey, so what's the rest of the state of New York for?

It's actually cheaper to live in an average NY suburb than it is to live in an NJ suburb, because of the tax differences.

And upstate NY is for people who want to pretend they're still New Yorkers while living in a place that's sort of like Massachusetts or Vermont.

Never been. I enjoyed my time in MA, though. Granted, most of it has been spent in Boston. But the Concord area and Amherst were nice. Salem's cool. Went in October once. That was interesting.

Vermont has Hill Farmstead and The Alchemist. Probably the two most hyped breweries in the world at the moment.

The Alchemist only make one beer but it's considered one of the best beers and at least one of the best double IPA's. Hill Farmstead is so small and so popular that their entire distribution area is, well, just the brewery shop itself.

Literally the only things I think of when I think of Vermont are maple syrup and skiing. I don't have the slightest clue what else there is to do there.

Not much from what I gathered during my visit. It's pretty though.

We could rake all the leaves into a enormous pile and jump into them?
