So you can race through a crowded city with more alcohol than blood in your system and tell cops to suck it?

I wrote my A-Level chem project in LaTeX on a Danish keyboard Smiley: lol I know how annoying it is.

I'm actually inclined to just switch keyboard layouts for coding related stuff.

How are curly brackets "English"? Smiley: lol

In our lab, we speak German part of the time because all the German theorists seem to band together at my university. Although the people in my group are from Poland and Botswana...

You make it sound like nothing more than an application to community college. Having the education and experience to even be able to apply to Oxford is quite an accomplishment. Congrats and good luck!

I eat too much and drink too much while traveling. Especially when there is a very nice restaurant with good local beer within walking distance of my hotel

Last time around, I regretted not applying to better universities so much.

I think this time I'm kind of at the point where I've taken a course there (at the same department), know the odds of getting in (about 30%, not too bad) and it's genuinely my third choice (or possibly fourth, lol) so I'm not that bothered about whether I do get in. I think revising for the interview will be useful for just gaining all that knowledge. And I think getting in would be kind of cool, but I am stressing a lot more about Cambridge where I can't even send in my application yet because I've trouble contacting the right people to get my research proposal done. Isn't Elinda from TN? Dunno where, though.

[EDIT]

How unhappy I am with my job is starting to get problematic... Just being here is enough to spike my anxiety levels up towards breaking point, and it's basically an eight-hour game of balancing internal calming exercises with getting **** done...

An eight-hour game with 1.5-2 hours of driving on either end. This morning was particularly awful, because it was pouring the entire way. Nothing like spending 2 hours fearing for your life before 8 hours of significant stress.

TL;DR: I'd be beyond useless in a combat situation.

I REALLY wasn't happy this morning.

I started getting here half an hour early, so I could have some time alone before having to deal with anything. Not that I mind the other people who come in at 8 (they're who I'm closest to), it's just nice to have time alone to destress after the drive.

Side note: I just had to call someone my boss fired before I came here. Because she was ignoring my boss' emails. That was not enjoyable.

Or useful, as it (unsurprisingly) turns out.

Aren't you coming up on your one-year anniversary? I seem to remember you disappearing for a bit last November (I think?). Smart, good-looking young man like yourself, with all that experience, you've got to have a marketable resume by now, no?

O.K., I have no idea what you look like, that was a throw-in, but I can tell you from personal experience that the crap you put with now is an investment against your future job. You just have to slog through and keep that in mind to keep you sane. Some of the crappiest jobs I've had have led to some really good ones.

Then, the next thing you need to learn, is to recognize a great job and not leave it for "something better." I've done that too . . . Smiley: banghead

I had to call her because a work-related media account is in her name, and we need control of it, but can't get it through any other channel we want to go through. Not that the call did anything to help there...

And apparently I had to call because the person in question has been ignoring emails from my boss (which isn't remotely surprising, given the circumstances). Not that she was any happier to speak with me. She was quite pleased to say hello to former coworkers at least, so I felt less ****** about bothering her (having never met her).

Also,

I'm sexy as hell and everyone some of you know it. Smiley: grin

Right now, I'm looking at positions in publishing. One was actually posted today that I really want, but we'll see. They want experience in publishing, but I'm hoping I'll be able to squeeze past that.

The thing that sucks is that publishing is a very closed sector, so starting at the very bottom seems to be the only option for anyone looking to enter the field. I'll have to take a sizable pay cut to do it, but I figure it's worth not being miserable. Smiley: lol

I do know this position gave me a lot of experience, and I learned a lot. And if I was a more driven type, I'd probably love it. But money isn't really a big motivator for me (if I have enough for my needs, I'm happy), and I'm not particularly ambitious where my career path is concerned.

As of right now, I've been here about 8 months now (with the fortune of it looking like 9 on a resume). I can make it 3 more if I have to. Smiley: tongue

I really do hope I get an interview, though.

Thanks. It doesn't look like submitting a cover letter will work, so I'll have to get more creative.
