Very cool, if for some reason you do end up on our side of the world visiting with a collaborator make sure to send Aethien some beer so he stops complaining. Smiley: wink The other data guy here used to work in the Berkley Physics dept. for a number of years and has had only nice things to say about the place (and some fascinating stories, as one might imagine).

There was an interesting post on Kotaku about how pokemon design is actually getting much better over time, but nostalgia is keeping people from appreciating that. Like, people are pissed off about Honedge's evolution (two swords), when it's pretty much no different from dugtrio or Magneton.

Also, apparently the change to a lot of the art style, in ways, is because they're making it easier for kids to draw the pokemon, which I can get behind.

But as of right now, none of the designs are too ridiculous.

Hey, remember this post?

Yeah.

I'm not sure that's fair.

For one, the Dex listings say that those keys on the ring are actually just keys. Because it has a fascination with them, trainers give Klefki their keys, because they know it won't lose them (like they might). They also specify it's very popular with shopkeepers as a result. And why wouldn't it be - your key is always under armed guard. Smiley: lol

And here's the thing; it's a Fairy Pokemon.

A love of keys (and propensity to steal them) is a REALLY old trait of Faeries in Fairy Tales. And if you lump them and elves together, the Shopkeeper part of the story fits right in.

/shrug

That seems okay to me. Whether or not it's a fairy that took the shape of a key because it was interested in them, or a fairy that took a fascination to keys because they look similar to it, etc., remains to be seen. But I have no problems with the design.

Now, if those keys were a part of it, I might. Smiley: lol

On the other hand, if this is actually the final form of the fire starter, I might be willing to accept Fennekin as the best-designed starter to-date. The Froakie final evolution looks badass, too. I don't love Chesnaught yet, but we'll see with time. I'm not sure I understand the squirrel -> sloth evolution they seem to have gone with. Smiley: lol

I'm not saying I don't love the originals. I adore them. But I have to admit, they can be just as insane.

Cubone is a pokemon that wears its mother's skull, and evolves so that its mother's skull is fused to it. But that's universal. And while fan theories love thinking it's a Kangaskhan baby that lost its mother, the fact remains that's logically insane in its current state... especially now that we have pokemon breeding, and the mothers come through just fine.

Or how about Farfetch'd? The pokemon that carries its own seasoning around with it? Apparently it can't live without that leek, but it might eat it in an emergency and run off to find a new one? Why can't it live without it? It's not attached, and it's not a grass pokemon?

And it's not like item-based pokemon are new. Voltorb and Electrode are the ones that started that trend. At least now they give the item-based pokemon an honest effort. They don't just make their signature self-destruct and then pretend like it's not an issue that they never die.

I dunno. It's just a pokemon that looks similar to a key. But it's not THAT close to one, at all, without the other keys there for comparison.

Honestly, if you saw that pokemon without the keys on the ring, would you have ever really thought that's what it looked like? With the name, I would have thought it was meant to look like a music note.

You may need some stronger prescription glasses. It's got a frigging keyhole for a mouth, it doesn't get more recognizable than that.

Well if you ever are in the neighborhood definitely swing up and say hi. Smiley: grin

You'll have to get out to the coast and visit Pigtails as well. Trying to think of who else is in the area, Kao is just up the road, Theo is too (not that he's around so much any more). Come to think of it there were a few other Oregon posters I haven't seen in a while now...

Where'd everyone go? Smiley: mad

Driving in this morning listening to my local NPR radio station broadcasting BBC news hour. They're interviewing someone in Texas about the shutdown. The woman says (you have to imagine this as a pretty high pitched female voice, with the sound of incredulity and a southern accent) "I thought Obamacare was free. But its not! If I thought it was free, how many other people thought it was free? We need to just repeal this whole thing. Praise our great senator for doing his part!"

I found myself yelling at the radio for some reason. "Moron! Why would you think it was free? Because your state doesn't want to have anything to do with it, and you get your news from talk shows! Get your head out of your ***!" Then I thought, "I need to stop listening to the radio before I have my coffee."

It's gonna be a long day.

How could someone, who is obviously inclined to a political talk show on NPR, somehow not know that Obamacare cost money? Smiley: rolleyes

Kids these days. Smiley: disappointed

Edit: I mean seriously that's been the thing with it all along "everyone has to buy healthcare, if you're poor you get a discount." Like from day 1 people, at this has been going on for like 2 years now?

She was being interviewed by BBC and it was broadcast on NPR. I'm assuming she does not listen to NPR because that's a communist front that her senator, praise him, and other right wing politicians have targeted for a long, long time as an example of what's wrong with America.

EDIT: Oh, wait . . .

You had me doing a double-take. At first I was sure you meant her when you said "someone," then I thought my sarcasm meter was surely broken and you meant me when you said "someone." Hence the edit.

Also, because it is so closely related to the subject at hand - I got a letter from someone yesterday that I cannot stop laughing about, or showing to people in the office to make them laugh. I got a feeling it's not that funny but that maybe it's just been a long week for me.

First sentence is the standard "acknowledge receipt" of my letter with attachment. Second sentence "advises" me that my 1,041 page attachment is incorrect because it is missing a page. Third sentence, and it's the first three words of this sentence that I can't stop laughing about, begins, "It is thus that I enclose . . ."

What? Is he handing me two stone tablets with 10 commandments written on them or something? Why can't people just say, "Thanks, but I noticed a page is missing. I'm attaching a copy of the page for your convenience."

[Ohh, maybe above, instead of saying "Hence the edit," I should have said "It is thus that I edited my post."!]
