Guess I'm the only 80's kid who grew up nurturing a seething hatred for all things Pokémon. Too many poorly dubbed anime shows on TV back then.

The game is rather entertaining the first couple playthroughs, even if the show is shallow and boring.

the game is better when you actually fight other people.

that is when most of the stuff dig was rambling about comes in to play in a more serious way.

Yeah, the game's pretty interesting at a meta level now, because of the PVP stuff.

But it's not going to really start getting interesting until:

1. You hit the really high level PVE stuff.
2. You can no longer just outlevel content, as in battling other trainers at cap.

That's when you're going to start to care about things like cycling weather effects, stacking buffs/debuffs, etc.

Now if only getting pokemon to level cap didn't require hours and hours of mind numbing grinding.

They have a game mode now that automatically levels your pokemon to 100 for purposes of that fight. So now you only need to hit your sufficient EV levels, which isn't much at all.

[EDIT]

The REAL time-grind is getting the pokemon you want to actually use, not getting them leveled enough to have all the skills you want them to have.

I just hope the designs are actually interesting this time around. I swear to God, if I see a chair Pokemon or something, I'm done.

My phone only plays a GBA emulator though. I suppose I could try an SD simulator but from what I've read they're not that great yet and my phone isn't exactly top of the line.

There was an interesting post on Kotaku about how pokemon design is actually getting much better over time, but nostalgia is keeping people from appreciating that. Like, people are pissed off about Honedge's evolution (two swords), when it's pretty much no different from dugtrio or Magneton.

Also, apparently the change to a lot of the art style, in ways, is because they're making it easier for kids to draw the pokemon, which I can get behind.

But as of right now, none of the designs are too ridiculous.

I think they've kind of lost their original connection to animals which is what Fishy is complaining about anyway.

Also, Lapsang Souchong is tasty.

I dunno, pokemon without a firm basis on plants or animals are relatively rare. Ghost pokemon had always been abstract ("ball of gas" isn't really superior to "possessing a mask").

Now, you basically see animal spinoffs, plant spinoffs, ghosts in various forms, and occasionally a dark type that is more humanoid. But, again, that's a lot of nostalgia. No one thinks about Mr. Mime or Jynx when remembering the original 150. Or Lickitung. Or Chansey. Or Porygon. Etc.

To be honest, I feel like I see far fewer of those weird pokemon in the newer versions than in the old ones. Generally speaking, if there's a pokemon whose design you can't figure out, it's because it's based on an animal you are unfamiliar with.

I totally was in the "That's ************** camp with a lot of the new pokemon, but I think it's probably true that the designs are generally less weird now than they used to be.

Nostalgia and being very familiar with the old pokemon makes them less weird.

Also, I'm cooking up some mushrooms tonight that I picked myself.

So much freaky pokemon sex to get Earthquake passed through 2 different breeding groups just to round out one little fuzzball. Back and forth went my bike while they did their thing over and over again. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth...

On the bright side though my captive breeding program managed to release dozens of female sandshrews into the wild. Smiley: nod

lol, I'm sure the population of sandshrew will be much better off, and the local ecosystem not at all affected. Smiley: lol

Worth noting that they're introducing some kind of super training system that will make EV training even easier. Apparently, it's a series of minigames targeting specific stats, and you can train them at any time. So that should be a nice way to get new pokemon appropriately trained really quickly once you clear the breeding phase.

Other features they're adding:
8 dimensional movement (no more up, left, up, up, up, left).
-Plus, Pokemon mounts (Rhyhorn and one of the new ones confirmed as mount pokemon).
--Apparently, mounts will allow you to use some HM-esque moves while on them. Whether or not the mount needs to know the HM, I don't know.

Sky battles (battles where you can only use flying pokemon or pokemon with the levitate trait).

I'm curious how they'll handle sea battles with non-water pokemon, now that the game terrain is based on the environment.

I rather enjoy both. At it's peak, Digimon has been pretty great. But Pokemon has been more consistently enjoyable.

From an anime perspective, Tamers was really awesome. But I'm not sure I've ever cried as much as the petrification scene in the first pokemon movie...

Game-wise, I have to say I've found the pokemon games more consistently enjoyable. But so few of the digimon games get localized that it's hard to tell.

Digimon / Pokémon = Pet battles + Gear score

True fact.

Digimon games were always trying to be vastly different from the previous game, for better or worse. Usually worse. For such a potentially awesome franchise the games just never seem to take off. Pokemon on the other hand has been essentially the same game for, what, twenty years? The same game but with one, one and a half things added per edition and a little refinement in between.

As far as anime, Digimon trumps Pokemon ten times out of eight.

Silver/Gold just hit gold really. At that point they put together something with deep and balanced PvP play at end game, and just spent the next years filling in the blanks in the spreadsheet with new pokemon. Nothing left to do but juice it for all it's worth at that point.

Now if they'd only make an MMO... Smiley: glare
